One
My name is Rod Devlin and I never believed that some people could see ghosts, spirits and other things which were invisible to the rest of us. I assumed these people, who claimed they could, were frauds and charlatans.
The start of my journey, of discovery and the terror I was to experience, began with the Physicist Niels Bohr and one of his theories of quantum mechanics. He postulated that everything was in flux and was therefore continually in motion until we looked at it and only then does it become fixed and visible.
I thought if Bohr’s theory is true when using light, which is the medium we use to see, then what would we see if we used a different medium.
I was a consultant to a company which concentrated on communications.
I had free run of their laboratory which gave me access to advanced equipment, so I started experimenting with wavelengths that were outside of our visible range and beyond what is used in science today.
I also made a viewing mechanism, similar to 3D Glasses, which would operate in my new medium.
I almost dropped the mechanism the first time I switched it on. The shock I experienced made me think twice about using it again.
Eventually my curiosity overcame my shock and I started looking again through my viewing mechanism, which I named the Visor. I was looking into a new world. The figures I could see looked human and were dressed in a recognisable manner. However, that was where the normal comparison ended. I tried to avoid colliding with them as they walked towards me; however, there was no need as they passed straight through me. It was obvious that I was invisible to them. Whilst I could not see the walls of the room in which I was standing, I could now see other buildings which did not exist in my own world.
The apprehension I had first felt when I used the Visor turned into a mania to witness this New World and make a written record of what I could see.
I modified the Visor so that I could see the New World then with a flick of a switch I could see my world, otherwise I was likely to walk into a ‘my world’ wall or worse still; get hit by a ‘my world’ car.
Over the months that followed, I spent every possible free daylight hour viewing it. I followed people, I call them ‘people’ as I had no other word to describe them and found that they conversed with each other, but unfortunately, I could not hear any sounds as my only medium into their world was visual. Occasionally, I would come across a ‘person’ who would suddenly look in my direction with a puzzled look on their face. They would stare at the space I was occupying as if they could sense my presence. I would imagine that in their world they would be regarded as frauds and charlatans; a salutary lesson for me, considering my earlier views.
After about 3 months of using the Visor, I noticed a young woman who seemed to be following me. If I turned to look at her, she would scurry away and hide behind a building; she would then peer around the corner of the building to check whether I was still looking for her. After a while I became accustomed to her presence and tried to observe her surreptitiously. It became clear that she could see me, but whilst brave enough to follow me, was too frightened to approach me. Whilst she was dressed the same way as the other females were, in what could be described as a white uniform, she seemed to have individualised it. In my world she would be described as a ‘hippy’. She also appeared to be more ‘alive’, if I can use that wording in this context, than the other ‘people’ I had seen.
I had to assume she could see me and not see the other humans of my world, otherwise why would she concentrate on me. I came to the conclusion that the Visor was the difference between me and other people. I assumed that if I switched the Visor off I would disappear from her view. But unfortunately she would also disappear from my view. Therefore, I worked out a sequence; I would switch the Visor off for a few seconds, move closer to her, then switch it back on and check her behaviour.
So one day when she had followed me for some time, I initiated the sequence. I switched the Visor off then moved quite closer to her and then switched it on. She looked shocked. This reaction from her proved to me that the Visor was activating whatever she was seeing. I could only assume that the transference of the New World visual wavelength into my normal visual wavelength through the Visor was casting an aura around me which was visible to certain people. Without really knowing, I postulated that I would appear as an apparition.
Somehow, I had to try and find a method of communicating with her. It was obvious that verbal communication was not possible, so I wondered if they had a written language which I could learn. The characters on their street signs, to my eyes, seemed to sit between an Asian and Middle Eastern language.
What I had noticed was the manner in which they greeted each other. The men by gently tapping, where I assumed their heart was located, with their clenched fist, and the females with a slight curtsy.
On the next occasion that I saw the young woman. I greeted her by tapping on my chest with my clenched fist. She looked surprised but responded with the customary curtsy.
I did not make any other gestures to her but continued my examination of other people in the street as I felt that it would be prudent to take things very slowly with the young woman rather than possibly frightening her away. However, I did notice that she followed me more closely than previously.
Two
“I have just communicated with a Ghost.” This was the first comment the girl who had been observing me said as she joined her group of friends.
“Anjo, you are crazy,” someone replied, “Firstly, for weeks you have told us that you have been following a Ghost, and now you are talking to it. What next, an invitation to dinner?” He added with a laugh.
“Well, if it did, it would be more interesting than having dinner with you idle lot,” She replied sharply, as she turned to walk away.
“Well, who are you to act so superior?” One of the girls shouted after her.
Anjo turned and retraced her steps to the group. “I am the one who has been trying to rouse all of you out of your stupor,” She said grimly, “Don’t you realise what is happening? You sit there like dumb animals whilst our way-of-life, useless as it is, is being eroded. There is an uprising on the way by people who resent our way of life and you lot have not got the sense to see it.”
“Please, not another sermon,” one of the group members added sneeringly, “You are spoiling our day.”
“Well, make the most of your day, because there are not many left.” With that Anjo spun on her heels and walked quickly away with tears of frustration gathering in her eyes.
How can I convince these people that their way of life, which decades of idle stability have encouraged them to feel is their right, is about to be torn apart by another tribe who think our life is decadent and feel that we should be following their way of life. Our ruling class lives idly in their own little world apart from everyone else. So who can I turn to?
Three
At this time professional reasons kept me occupied, so for about one month I was unable to use my Visor and view my New World. On my return to viewing, I found the streets deserted. For the first time I entered a building. It was empty but appeared ransacked. The upturned chairs and tables were scattered about the room. What I took to be decorations were stripped from the walls and lay on the floor. Obviously something dramatic had occurred. For the next few hours, I wandered the streets without seeing one person.
Suddenly a figure ran from out the door of one of the buildings. He appeared to be scared as he was continually looking over his shoulder as he ran down the street. Two other figures appeared from the same doorway, they looked the same as the person they were pursuing except that they were dressed differently, being all in black with one white diagonal stripe across their chest. They also seemed to be carrying weapons. I could only watch in horror as one of the pursuers aimed a weapon, fired, and the man they were chasing fell to the ground. The tw
