A special thank you to my special friend and editor, Jeannie Collins, thank you! Without your guidance and help I know that “Vacation of a Lifetime” wouldn’t be as good as it is.

This book is dedicated to my first cousin, Wendy, who gave me the inspiration to openly talk about Lung Cancer and her battle with this terrible disease.

To Harvey: You are my inspiration and I know that I can always count on you to help me in every way possible.

A special thank you to David Wang and his team from Tepson Translation. You helped me in understanding many Chinese names and the meaning of each.

Sean Bogaard was instrumental in helping me with the nautical terms and the layout of the sailing ship. THANKS!

I am in the midst of doing research for my next novel, (Murder at Millers’ River) which will be about murder and re-incarnation. I know that you’ll enjoy this new book and will love some of the new people that will join the cast of characters that keep coming back into your lives.
CHAPTER ONE

Do not think you are obliged to repent only for transgressions involving acts, such as stealing, robbing, and sexual immorality. Just as we must repent such acts, so must we examine our evil feelings and repent our anger, our jealousy, our mocking thoughts, our excessive ambition and greed. We must repent all these. Therefore it is written: “Let the wicked forsake their ways, the unrighteous their thoughts (Isaiah 55.7)

Maimonides, 12 th Century

Suzanne and Nancy were blindfolded, their hands cuffed behind their backs, as they heard yelling, screaming and fighting above them. They were surprised by four pirates invading their boat. They didn’t know who fired the guns, and they heard something being thrown overboard. Suddenly they were hoisted from the crew’s bunks to their feet and their blindfolds removed.
The bearded, filthy and gruff men slapped them with open palms on their newly re-constructed faces. The leader of the group put a knife to Nancy’s throat. “The other members of your party are upstairs. They’re not in good shape.” His cohorts chuckled at his remark. “The captain and crew are overboard, being fed to the sharks.” The laughter of the leader’s men seemed to fill the entire lower deck. “If you don’t want the same happening to you, tell us where your money is and we’ll let you go peacefully.”
“We already collected your friends’ money. Where is your stash hidden?” Suzanne read many brochures and magazines on the subject of new age pirates and didn’t want any more harm done to herself or Nancy. Leading the bandits to their suite they showed them where the money was located. After greedily taking their vacation funds the men ran up the stairs. Suzanne heard additional firing of semi-automatic guns and glass shattering. The men ran down to their small ladder that they used to board the sailboat.
They heard the engine of the skiff turn around, their motor driving these men away from the crippled yacht. Running up the stairs the first thing they saw was that all the windows were shot out, the communications equipment broken and unusable to radio for help. They ran to the other passengers who had become dear friends. The women were crying and the men trying to comfort them. Someone cried, “They took our motor, valuable electronic equipment and all the essential apparatus that we needed to get us to safety.”
Suzanne felt herself thrashing, her bed covers thrown onto the floor. She envisioned herself wet with seawater. Perspiration was running down her entire body. She suddenly sat up realizing that this was a nightmare. She didn’t know why she dreamt that horrible dream. She realized that she often had a sixth sense but knew she would never find herself on a sailboat, ever!

MASSACHUSETTS

Suzanne and Nancy were finally on the mend from the terrible ordeal they had in Japan. It had taken a while for their many operations and the physical therapy sessions to work. Through diligence and determination they started seeing a definite improvement in their bodies. The pain (usually lived with day by day) started decreasing. During the day it was easier for Suzanne to perform her work on clients. She found it easy to accomplish regular tasks around the house, the laundry, cooking and straightening up her home. She was happy to see the therapy sessions end. The idea of working out appealed to her. Suzanne signed both herself and Nancy up at a local gym in Boston to work out on a regular basis.
At first Nancy balked at the idea but after Suzanne enlightened Nancy on the merits of physical fitness, Nancy decided to give it a try. They made a definite time to meet (four days a week) at the fitness center in downtown Boston. It was easier for Suzanne to work out before starting her busy schedule. In that way she could shower at the facility rather than do it at home before leaving for work. At the gym, they talked her into hiring a personal trainer for her and Nancy. At first she resisted the idea but, after thinking it over, realized it would be beneficial to them both.
Nancy found having a definite schedule easier for her during the day. If she started out on an upbeat note, it was uncomplicated to follow through on any agenda she wished. The partners found that they liked the physical challenge presented to them.
Suzanne’s children teased their mother endlessly about her new regime. It was so unlike Suzanne to be so organized. Sometimes, during their workout sessions, Nancy and Suzanne felt the pain that they endured during their confinement in the hospital. The many injuries they sustained (courtesy of the Yakuza in the last mission) were the closest encounter to death the two women had experienced. Their triumph for justice against the evil ways of people and deliberate criminal aspects sometimes erupted with definite sore and aching muscles. The multiple wounds were healed, at least on the outside. In their hearts and souls it was difficult for the two women to go along with their everyday, mundane assignments when they knew that evil was still lurking all around them.
As hard as they tried to ignore the call for justice, some days it was difficult to ignore life as it really was. Although many people thought that the world was fine, Suzanne and Nancy realized that most people were delusional. They didn’t discuss their feelings openly to each other or to others or admitted their inner feelings to themselves. The concern and empathy for people or circumstances just stayed inside their hearts.
Suzanne’s daughters, Hope, Melanie and Taylor were glad to have Suzanne and Nancy out of the hospital; home once again and on the mend. They came very close to losing their mother and never wanted to experience anything like that again. It was a traumatic experience for all. Nancy, who was like a beloved aunt to them, almost died in the mayhem and they wanted to show their admiration for the two wonderful, courageous women in their lives. If they didn’t show their appreciation for how hard Suzanne worked when they were youngsters in order to give them a beautiful home, they wanted to show it now. They realized how dedicated a mother she was. She never wanted them to suffer because she was a divorced woman bringing up her children by herself. Yes, it was easier once Mrs. Walsh entered their lives, but Suzanne was the breadwinner.
The girls made a date to get together to discuss the events that occurred. They didn’t want to include other members of the family, just themselves. They all had a lovely dinner at Hope’s house and after the dishes were put away, they made themselves drinks and sat around the comfortable yet lavish furniture in Hope’s new living room. Taylor, sitting Indian Style on the silk, blue, flowered sofa made Hope’s skin crawl. She didn’t want to come across as a bitch, but was furious that Taylor had no regard for her interior-designed living room set. Clearing her throat, she asked Taylor nicely to kindly uncross her legs and sit down like a lady. Taylor was offended by her sister’s rude remark and reluctantly uncrossed her legs.
“Okay, let’s get down to business! I don’t mean the family business. I want to suggest something totally out of character for us and Mom. Of course, anything that we do for Mom must include Nancy. We know Mom wouldn’t want it any other way. We all realize what they went through this past year. They went through Hell and back. Yes, we realize that, in a way, their situation was one that they created themselves. We have to forget what happened, and be thankful that they’re alive, well, and, at times, can be a pain in the ass to each and every one of us.” They lifted their glasses at the same time and said: “Cheers to that!!”
“Okay, what did that mean and why did we have to get together tonight for this sentimentality?” Taylor asked. “Well, speaking for myself,” Melanie piped in, “I felt we should do something to show our appreciation for our mother and, of course, Nancy.”
“How do you, or should I say we, intend to do that?” Hope inquired. “We all know that Mom and Nancy are on a new kick, physical fitness. Now that’s
