Prologue
T HE PACIFIC OCEAN IS FULL of great fish and has the greatest fishermen after them. Here in the Pacific from off the shores of the Hawaiian Islands is Professor Bartholomew Alliance Jackson, who’s called Brewedr outside of the University of Washington in Seattle. He’s in a Kona fishing charter boat and is fishing for the biggest Pacific Blue Marlin ever caught. The record held for the largest Blue Marlin ever caught is 1,805 pounds. A man and his wife are aboard the charter, and so is the Captain with his crew. Brewedr usually has his best friend, Charles Manassas, with him, but this time he comes alone.
“I always calm down when I come to the Hawaiian side of the Pacific,” says Brewedr.
“I’ve always liked sailing in these waters for that too,” says the deckhand.
“My husband and me came from California and this is the first time we’ve ever been here,” says the woman who came with her husband. “He and I had planned to take the trip before, but something always comes up,” she continues. “Now that we’ve finally made it—we’ve got the right kind of excitement for fishing that we’re off the Hawaiian coast,” finishes the woman.
“Yes, and I brought my camera along just in case either one of us catches a record fish as well as just to take pictures,” her husband chimes in.
It’s in the afternoon and they’ve caught some yellow fin tuna since they set sail this morning at sunup. They have all fixed the tuna to their fishing line for bait. The ocean seems to be alive with its constant moving and shimmering light on the surface of the water and will stir the imagination from constantly looking at it, which gets them daydreaming. Brewedr wants to go to the bathroom. So he asks the deckhand to release the straps that have him held fast to the fighting chair. The deckhand comes over to where Brewedr is and helps him get out of the chair. The deckhand will sit there until Brewedr comes back.
Just when they’re trading places, a big Marlin is hooked on Brewedr’s line. Brewedr rushes to get the rod and reel, grabs it out of the cup that keeps the rod from flipping over, and has it held in his hands—standing there, rather than getting fastened back down in the fighting chair. The giant Marlin he hooked looks like it could be the one to break the record. Everyone on board the charter snaps out of their daydreaming and focuses in on Brewedr. He has become very excited and happy, laughing out loud.
The Marlin shoots straight up into the air from out of the water. And then, it hits its tail fin hard back down into the Pacific Ocean, splashing water up and into the boat, hitting everyone on deck and soaking him completely. The woman gets scared and screams, shaking her head at the enormous fish. Brewedr sounds a loud grunt as he falls down from the giant wave the Marlin creates. As Brewedr lands on the deck of the boat, the Marlin dives back down into the water for the depths of the ocean. Brewedr gets back up on his feet and the deckhand is reaching for him to lend a helping hand. But the Marlin has already taken the slack out of the line and pulls him down into the trailing edge of the back aft, causing Brewedr to hit his head and get a large bump on it. When the deckhand sees Brewedr bleeding, he gets to him and grips the fishing pole tight along with Brewedr, who is able to get back to his chair and get strapped in. But his hands are weakening from the strain of the giant Marlin’s constant pulling down to the bottom of the ocean. The deckhand helps him secure the fishing pole back down in the cup, as well.
“We’ll have to let the Marlin get tired of fighting. Then I can reel ’em in,” Brewedr sounds off excitedly.
“That’ll be a-ways yet, because of his enormous size,” says the deckhand.
The pilot keeps the boat moving to help with catching the Marlin. After some time has passed, the fighting Marlin resurfaces. Brewedr is able to get it close enough to the boat with the help of the pilot’s steering, so the deckhand can reach the Marlin with the gaff. He uses it to hook into the Marlin and pull it into an underneath compartment after he opens the door.
“Put your rod and reel down Brewedr, and help me put ’em away,” says the deckhand.
“Alright,” says Brewedr taking hold of the gaff along with the deckhand.
“There’s a good amount of his tail sticking out and boy does that one weigh it,” says the deckhand after they’ve put the Marlin in the underneath compartment.
“I know. I believe I beat the record,” Breweder says.
“Well…I tell ya what. It’s been a long time since we had one caught as big as that one is,” the deckhand replies back to Brewedr.
All of them aboard agree with taking Brewedr’s catch back to the docks right away—and to come back to it in a couple of days. Once they reach the harbor and dock the fishing boat, a long rope from the crane is tied to the tail of the giant Marlin Brewedr caught. And the Marlin is hoisted up and hangs in the air, while still attached to the crane so it can be weighed.
“I can’t wait to see what it weighs!” Brewedr says excitedly.
“Its 1,400 pounds even,” the deckhand shouts back at him.
“As big as it is?” Brewedr replies, to question.
“That’s right Brewedr, it’s not the record. The record is 1,805 pounds. You know that,” the deckhand answers back to him.
“Yes I know. But that catch will be big enough for me. And if my grandfather was still here, that’s what he’d say,” Brewedr finishes. Brewedr gets all of the arrangements made for getting the Marlin mounted. Then he flies on a plane back to Seattle—the next day, in the morning.

S TUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF Washington here in Seattle, are walking fast on the sidewalks and across the lawn to get to their classes at the beginning of the school year. The summer is in its final stages and classes at the University are starting again. Professor Bartholomew Alliance Jackson has arrived in his classroom where he teaches history. He’s writing on the chalkboard as students come in and take their seats. And now arrives Rachel Cummings. She makes her way through the front door and into the lobby. She finds the stairs and goes up to the floor where her classroom is. Rachel knows she’s running late, so she picks up speed climbing the stairs. The bell sounds and Professor Jackson has turned away from the blackboard to address the class.
“You can see from the writing on the board I am Professor Jackson. You don’t have to say the first two names. And here in history class you are going to be astonished at what you’re going to come to learn concerning some legendary stuff,” Professor Jackson says.
After these words, the door opens. The last student to arrive to the first class walks in. Professor Jackson stops talking until the door is closed again and the student sits down.
“You’re late,” says Professor Jackson.
“I’m sorry. I’m taking the busses and I didn’t have them timed right for transferring because they changed the schedule. I know the change-up for going to work, but I didn’t, for coming here.”
“What’s your name?”
“Rachel Cummings.”
“I won’t make a note of it this time. All is forgiven. Try and time the busses.” She nods her head to acknowledge him and sits calmly in her seat. Professor Jackson can see Rachel is a very attractive girl. Even though she’s wearing double-knitted elastic high water girls pants, with white socks and penny loafers on her feet. Her hair is black and she wears it long. Rachel’s eyebrows are high arched and her eyes are hazel. She has high cheekbones and full lips that make her look mysterious. Her nose is a bit pointed, but it fits well with all of her features. Her overall pigmentation
