THE AUTHOR COMMENTS

“My Jack Frost tales are loosely based on characters I met during my two decades in the Nevada gaming business. Are my stories connected in any way to actual events? Not quite. If they were, I’d probably have to go to jail for not coming forward with pertinent information. Let’s just say that the casino business generates more than its fair share of (often nearly unbelievable) stories, and let it go at that.
“Jack Frost is a composite of three Special Forces men I was lucky enough to have met when I was in the casino business. They’re gone now, victims of their chosen profession, but they’re not forgotten. They were amazing men doing an amazing job.
“One of the guys had a huge Doberman named ‘Scorpio’ and he was impressive, to say the least. Scorpio's gone now, too, but I used him as a model for J.T. Ripper, Jack Frost’s belligerent sidekick.
“The Ripper that I created is a wilder version of Scorpio, and he gets more fan mail than Jack does (sorry, buddy). I have no idea why, because my Ripper is grumpy and testy, and he pretty much hates everyone and everything. Truly a fun dog to write about.” — Ray Hoy
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING . . .

“ The Vegas Factor packs a punch!”
“Only a first-rate writer with years of experience in the casinos of Vegas and Reno could deliver this vivid journey into the sordid underbelly of Sin City.”
—Jerry McGinley, Lake Redemption
“Swift, compelling read”
“I'll be honest - stories of crime bosses, macho heroes, and dames in distress aren't really my cup of tea. But this should only further convince you to read The Vegas Factor , a novel that truly managed to hold my attention and keep me reading. Ray Hoy manages to pull together the aforementioned elements in a way that doesn't feel hackneyed or overdone, resulting in a light read that moves swiftly and decisively forward. Jack Frost, the main character, is a strong, yet humanly imperfect hero, which makes for a nuanced narrative. His opposition — ruthless Casino boss Harry Varchetta and his brutal bodyguard Benny Florentine — are equally cunning and bold, with the latter having a vicious streak a mile wide. Hoy writes with strong imagery and concise, evocative diction, throwing the reader straight into the action, allowing relationships and connections unfurl as the story does. And believe me, this is a story that pulls no punches. Highly recommended if you are into thriller material.”
— Brad, Crosscountry
“Jack Frost is a hero’s hero”
“This short but violent tale is clearly the opening gambit for a series but there is no real cliffhanger ending. Jack Frost (love the name!) is a hero’s hero — physically perfect, deadly in combat, etc. — and J.T. Ripper, the Doberman, was really a sweetheart, albeit with a taste for Scotch. The villains were exceptionally creepy! The book was good!”
— Patricia, May 2017
“Ray Hoy is one to watch”
“This was a very enjoyable read. I started reading this while I waited for a ball game to start, got involved in the novel and missed most of the game.”
— J. Bockman (Amazon)
“A hold-your-breath page-turner!”
— Patricia White, The 79th Prince
“This was a killer read”
“I don't normally give 5 stars to any of my reviews, as I'd like to think that the author(s) still have a bit of work to do ... but this book rang my bell . . . ends with a great conclusion fight scene and I won't spoil it for you.”
— Pumpman
“It is a good read”
“The story line is well constructed and the characters are colorful, but believable. It is fairly fast paced, but not at the expense of background information. Altogether, it is a good read.”
— Herb Garner (Amazon)
“Exciting and fast-paced thriller”
“Having lived in Las Vegas for 28 years myself, I found The Vegas Factor hard to put down. Ray Hoy’s eye for detail and his background as a casino marketing expert serve him well in this heart-thumping adventure into the underworld of vice and crime.”
— Barbara Dan, Silent Angel
“A smart, sexy, entertaining adventure”
“ A Proper Time to Die , the second book in the series of Jack Frost thrillers by Ray Hoy, is a smart, sexy, entertaining adventure. In his quest to avenge the murder of a beautiful young woman, Frost encounters a suave but deadly adversary named James Red Sleeves. This time the lives of two young women depend of the strength and cunning of Frost. The suspense keeps the reader on edge until the final sentence is fully digested. I can’t wait for Nightmare in Neon , #3 in this series.”
— Jerry McGinley, This Ominous Bird
“A fast-paced thriller”
From Laura Belgrave’s video review (Length: 4:18 Mins): “I’ve long been an admirer of Ray Hoy’s books. He knows his craft and he knows the publishing field as well. He’s both a traditional publisher and a pioneer in the ebook industry. Now, some of his most popular titles have been reintroduced not just as ebooks, but as bound paperbacks. Ray’s character, setting and fast-paced style makes his books compelling reads.”
— Laura Belgrave, Quietly Dead
“The action starts on page one”
“Frost and Red Sleeves are adversaries, but I found myself cheering for both of them, because both combined strength, focus and above all honor. If you like strong characters and sexy women, A Proper Time To Die is your cup of Scotch.”
— Richard A. Herman, Laszlo’s Fire
“A breath of fresh air”
“Brilliant dialogue and best of all, not one clichéd macho hero in sight. The main character is not perfect, he is flawed, just like the rest of us. Really enjoyed this. I just can’t wait to start the second book.”
— Vincent Bruno (UK)
“A fast-paced, hard-hitting thriller”
“The story has just about everything you could ask for in a thriller.”
—John Shearer
Five Stars: #2 - A Proper Time to Die
“Book #2 in Ray Hoy’s Jack Frost Thriller Series is set against the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, as Jack Frost confronts casino owner/mobster Harry Varchetta, who got away with the murder of singer Felicia Martinez. Vowing to get justice for Felicia, Frost rents an RV in Vegas as his base of operations and settles in for the duration with his Doberman, J.T. Ripper. Brace yourself for a surprise ending!”— Barbara Dan, Petticoat Warrior
“Great read”
“You won’t want to put it down until you find out what happens next.” — Robin Kummer
Five Stars: #1 - The Vegas Factor
“About five pages into The Vegas Factor a slimy casino man tells us that his enforcer, an ogre Luca Brasi-type named Benny Florentine, is a “reminder of the good old days.” That phrase just as easily describes this book, which is ostensibly set in modern day Reno and Las Vegas but is in almost every other sense a noir throwback to the days of Touch of Evil and Out of the Past . If this were a film, one would hope to see it in black and white.
“The settings are well-rendered, and Nevada’s full diversity, both the beauty and the ugliness, is seen in full scope. Hoy’s familiarity with the casino scene has served him well here. There are small moments throughout (a dingbat trophy wife at the craps table plucking the dice from the table with her long fingernails, a Texas high-roller gifting a $500 chip to a low-stakes player as if it were nothing) that feel quirky enough to be authentic.
“Well-depicted settings are only a canvas, though, if the story is not told well. This one is. I started the book at the beginning of a two hour plane ride, and was finished by the time we landed. This story is a throwback to the times when Bogart and Mitchum delivered clipped, sardonic dialogue and blowing plumes of smoke into lovingly rendered, black-and-white sets. Jack Frost is worth your time.”
— Kroveechernila
