Description

Does Octavius have a doppelgaenger? Could be! One who's insisting that he is the Great Bear. The Octavians insist that he is a nut intent on creating chaos or worse. The plot gets much thicker. It seems the real target of this complex charade isn't Octavius at all. It's Howard, the porcupine genius who's the world's leading expert on alternate universe travel. And the Admiral, a mad Zebra on an alternate planet, wants to capture Howard to enable his dastardly strategies for cosmic conquest. Otto the Magnificent is commissioned by Octavius to scuttle the Admiral's plans. Little does the Zebra know how potent the little lutrine is.Does romance rear its head? Well, maybe. Enter Priscilla, a very clever porcupine femme fatale who gets Howard's spiky attention. Life gets curiouser and curiouser.

Acknowlegements
These books have evolved over a long period of time and under a wide range of influences and circumstances. I am indebted to many people for helping to bring Octavius and his cohorts to the printed and electronic page. Thanks most especially to my wife, Virginia, for her insights and clever suggestions as well as her unfailing enthusiasm for the project and patience with its author. To my sons, Mark and Andrew and their spouses, Cindy and Lorraine, for helping to make these tomes more readable and audience friendly. To Cathy Hartnett, cheerleader-extraordinaire for her eagerness to see this alternate universe take form. To Jack Magan, Paul Bernish, Dan Andriacco, Amy Thomas, Luke Benjamin Kuhns, David Marcum, Derrick Belanger, and Zohreh Zand for their enthusiastic encouragement.
Kudos to Jim Effler, the late Bob Gibson and Brian Belanger for their wonderful illustrations and covers. Thanks, of course, to Sharon, Steve and Timi Emecz at MX Publishing for giving Octavius and his gang a great home.
If, in spite of all this support, some errors or inconsistencies have crept through, the buck stops here. Needless to say, all of the characters, situations, and narratives are fictional. Some locations, devices, historical figures and events are real.

About the Author
Harry DeMaio is a nom de plume of Harry B. DeMaio, successful author of several books on Information Security and Business Networks as well as the twelve-volume Casebooks of Octavius Bear for MX Publishing . He is also a published author for Belanger Books and the MX Sherlock Holmes series edited by David Marcum. A retired business executive, former consultant, information security specialist, pilot, disk jockey and graduate school adjunct professor, he whiles away his time traveling and writing preposterous books, articles and stories.
He has appeared on many radio and TV shows and is an accomplished, frequent public speaker.
Former New York City natives, he and his extremely patient and helpful wife, Virginia, and their late lamented and much loved Bichon Frisé, Woof, live in Cincinnati (and several other parallel universes.) They have two sons, living in Scottsdale, Arizona and Cortlandt Manor, New York, both of whom are quite successful and quite normal, thus putting the lie to the theory that insanity is hereditary.

Part One
Our Origins
(From “An Introduction to Faunapology” by Octavius Bear Ph.D.)
About 100,000 years ago, according to scientific experts, a colossal solar flare blasted out from our Sun, creating gigantic magnetic storms here on Earth. These highly charged electrical tempests caused startling physical and psychological imbalances in the then population of our world. The complete nervous systems of some species were totally destroyed. For example, “Homo Sapiens” lost all mental and motor capabilities and rapidly became extinct. Less developed species exposed to the radiation were affected differently. Four-footed and finned mammals, birds and reptiles suddenly found themselves capable of complex thought, enhanced emotions, self-awareness, social consciousness and the ability to communicate, sometimes orally, sometimes telepathically, often both. Both speech production and speech perception slowly progressed with the evolution of tongues, lips, vocal cords and enhanced ear to brain connections. Many species developed opposable digits, fingers or claws, further accelerating civilized progress. Some others (most fish and underground dwellers) were shielded from radiation and remained only as sentient as they were before the blast. This event is referred to as The Big Shock. It remains under intensive study.
Positive in our knowledge that we are not alone in the cosmos, my staff and I are heavily engaged in Project Multiverse, successful searches for alternate universes, especially those in which “Homo Sapiens” continues to live and hopefully, prospers. This book also presents some of the results of that project.
