Description

Days of Rage is the story of Mick Scott who returns home from the Vietnam War in 1968 and goes to school at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale on the G.I. Bill. He then makes the acquaintance of David Gordon, the director of the controversial Vietnamese Studies Center there; controversial because it is rumored to be affiliated with the CIA. Scott soon concludes it is no rumor at all when Gordon recruits him to infiltrate the local Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in an effort to uncover who the spy is that has infiltrated the Center, as Gordon suspects it is someone who is affiliated in some way (directly or indirectly) with the SDS.
As the mystery unfolds the author keeps track of the ongoing situation in Vietnam through a thesis Scott is writing for his master?s degree.
All the while the author attempts to convey the lifestyles of those attending college in the turbulent times of the late 1960s and early to mid-1970s when the violent antiwar movement racked America?s campuses.
One of the underlying themes throughout is Mick Scott?s constant struggle with youthful alcoholism, which at first he doesn?t recognize as such, but eventually he comes to realize it is a problem that must be dealt with.
