Clark Kentmen brushed his brown, sweat-slick hair from his eyes again. It was as if his hair had a mind of its own and was trying to shield from what he was doing. He had long ago discarded the jacket and plaid shirt he wore into the clearing a few hours earlier. The shirt lay, stained with sweat and mud, on the pile of unused tools. If a jogger stumbled upon him now, the red clay caked on his dark jeans and leather boots and smeared into his undershirt would be hard to explain. But was undeterred; his weeks of planning would pay off big.
He glanced toward the sky, hoping the rain in the forecast would hold off a few more minutes. Like everything tonight, the rain was part of the plan. Black clouds advanced; wind and darkness crept over the trail.
Clark scooped out one final shovel full and turned his attention to the small clearing where he stood in a waist-deep hole. Trees surrounded him on all sides. The undisturbed ground showed a scattering of rocks and clumps of thick grass. The main trail, thirty-five or forty feet from the clearing, cut directly through hill and rock. The trail had once been a small offshoot of the Central Virginia Railroad System, but the state claimed the land and turned it into miles of hiking trails. The tracks had been pulled up and asphalt poured in its place. Regulations prevented development and preserved the natural landscape. During the spring and summer months, the trail was clogged with cyclers and joggers. In the fall as the nights got cooler and darkness descended faster, less and less people wandered through the twisting trails. With the approaching storm, no one would be around.
When he began three hours ago, thunder cracked in the distance. The clearing momentarily brightened with each flash of ever encroaching lightning. As he leaned on the wooden handle of his shovel and took deep breaths, the cool early-fall rain finally arrived.
