NAVY MEN PRESIDENTS
ETERNAL FLAME NOVELS BY ED DELKER
November 2008
Ninety year-old Red Teagan, former Secretary of the Navy, sends a letter to Admiral Rowles, CNO, stating a Navy Man was responsible for President Kennedy’s death! Two Navy officers interview Red Teagan and learn Secretary Teagan was Jack Kennedy’s closest and truest best friend no one ever heard about. Red takes the Navy officers on an enthralling journey from when he first met the future president till the fateful day a rouge operation, Eternal Flame, claims President Kennedy’s life.
Book 1- Eternal Flame Trilogy, Love Laughter Courage
Red Teagan’s cautionary tale describes himself and Jack as young men of their generation seeking love, surviving on laughter and finding courage to cope with the horrors of war. A chance meeting on a remote island during WWII by Red and Jack with three other junior Navy officers, Johnson, Nixon and Ford, opens all of their eyes to great possibilities. A native mystic decrees these four men are destined to become President but their collective destiny flows through Jack’s destiny.
Book 2 - Eternal Flame Trilogy, Mastema
The future Navy Men Presidents return home and resume their peacetime lives and careers. Red works behind the scene on Jack’s campaign for Congress. Nixon, Johnson and Ford also rapidly advance their political careers. However, evil followed Red and Jack home from the war and threatens Jack’s life. Red and other veterans from the war battle a serial killer called Mastema.
Book 3 - Eternal Flame Trilogy, Operation Eternal Flame Destiny Achieved
Under Secretary of the Navy, Red Teagan is viewed as nothing more than Jack’s wartime crony. When the CIA identifies a rogue operation within the U.S. Government with the mission to assassinate Jack, Red once again marshals the Navy Men and wartime comrades to protect Jack.
Preface
Twenty-six of the first thirty-four Presidents of the United States served in the U.S. Army, state militias and the Continental Army. Twelve presidents were generals. None were Navy Men.
In the latter half of the Twentieth Century, six Presidents were Navy Men. All were products of WWII and all were junior officers. Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford served in the South Pacific Theater of War in 1942-43. During the latter half of WWII, President George H. W. Bush served in the Central Pacific and President Carter attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. The first four Navy Men Presidents controlled the White House for sixteen consecutive years, 1961 to 1977. Sweeping changes in American society occurred. Both great accomplishments and great tragedies marked their Presidencies. President Carter defeated President Ford only to lose re-election to President Reagan who was succeeded by the last Navy Man President of the Twentieth Century, George H. W. Bush.
This fictional story about the Navy Men Presidents revolves around a hypothetical chance encounter on Vella Lavella by not just the first four Navy Men Presidents but also other Navy Men who will help shape the Navy Men Presidents’ destinies.
Make no mistake this novel is a work of fiction. The story is inspired by historical events during the mid-twentieth century but should not be considered historical fiction. This novel is about the interplay between men and women facing tremendous conflict and relying on true friends for support. The fictional Navy Men Presidents and supporting characters are unique and should not be viewed by the reader as the actual historical figures or interpretation of their actions during historical events. Book Three follows the fictional Navy Men adventures through the 1960 Presidential Campaign to the fateful day in November when a Marine sniper, Lee Harvey Oswald, kills President Kennedy.
While the Navy Men Presidents novels were inspired by historical events, these novels solely contain fictitious characters, places and circumstances. These novels are not interpretations of history or the actions of actual people. The dialogue, attributes, motives, and actions by the fictional characters are solely the product of dramatic and narrative purposes.
A letter from the bride to be of the first Navy Man President to the reader:
Tomorrow, I marry the love of my life and a reluctant man of destiny. He and I share a passion for the arts and history. I wish we could retreat from the world stage and live out our lives as historians or museum curators. Jack’s destiny is elsewhere and so is mine at his side in what will be filled with great joy mixed with great sadness.
This journey I embark on tomorrow is filled with an eclectic group of Navy Men whose destinies swirl around Jack’s destiny. Lyndon truly distains Jack for his entitled life but there is a bond between them that I can’t explain. Jack’s best friend, Red, infers some event in the South Pacific during the war bonded Jack not only to Lyndon but two other unlikely compatriots, Dick and Jerry. Then there is the Navy doctor from the South Pacific. I can’t decide if he is Machiavelli or a guardian angel.
Two people Jack and I trust above all others are Red and his gorgeous wife, Janine. They will always be there for Jack and I even if we are destitute and social lepers. They have no hidden agendas.
Red knows Jack better than anyone including Jack’s family. Under Red’s unassuming and often silly way is an intelligence that knows exactly how to protect Jack from others and himself. Like her husband, Janine is there for Jack and I. She is my rock. Even though we’re ten years apart in age, we are the best of friends. Red and Janine are not just best friends but true friends for life.
As a historian, Jack is quick to point out the distortion and self-serving lies propagated by many so-called historians. As for the accuracy of his own history, Jack jokes that Red is the only person who will be able to give his life a true accounting. When Red does provide the "true" accounting of Jack’s life, I hope he uses this letter as the forward.

Chapter 1
1954 Kennedy Compound - Hyannis Port, Massachusetts
Four limos pull into the circle drive in front of the main house on Cape Cod. Janine Teagan and Jack’s sister Patricia lead Jackie, bridesmaids, friends and family out of the house and into the waiting limos. Jack and Red stand in the breakfast room doorway watching the gaggle of women get situated in the limos. Jack is dressed in his favorite casual attire, tennis shoes, sweat pants and his Harvard sweatshirt.
Red asks Jack, "You sure you don’t want to go out on the town for an impromptu bachelor party?" Jack says, "Nah, I just want to read a good book and fortify myself for tomorrow. Just as Jack turns to walk through the breakfast room to the study, a car races into the compound with Jack’s brother, Bobby, at the wheel. The car screeches to a stop in front of the breakfast area. Jack is completely perplexed by Bobby’s reckless driving and just stares at the car. He looks at Red as if to say, "What’s going on?" Red gives Jack a sly smile that further confuses Jack.
Completely by surprise Jack is grabbed by two incredibly strong men from behind. Before he can turn and look at his kidnappers, a third man slips a cloth gag around his mouth and a black cloth bag over Jack’s head. Then Jack’s feet and hands are bound by tape. Next thing Jack realizes is that he is being carried and then unceremoniously slung into the trunk of a car. After the trunk lid slams shut, Jack hears a woman say, "Move over Short Stuff, it’ll take a real driver to give him the appropriate ride to the other side of Barnstable." The next thing Jack hears in the pitch-black trunk is four or five people getting into the car.
Jack starts to slow his breath down and reasons that since Red only smiled and didn’t put up a fight, it has to be a prank. He tells himself to relax and enjoy the ride. Suddenly the car tires squeal and the engine roars. Jack is thrown violently to the rear of the trunk. The next thing he feels is the car rapidly accelerating even more. The car leaves the pavement and violent
