Acknowledgement
This was the moment I have long dreaded. I had no idea what to put in my acknowledgement pages. It’s kind of funny to me. I could write thousands of words on blank pages, but when it comes to talking about the people who support me, I can’t write a single one. It’s supposed to be filled with thank yous and gratitude for all the support that people have shown me. But how can I possibly put that into words? The overwhelming encouragement my loved ones and my friends have given me. For every word they told me. Every smile, every pat on the back. Everything. I cannot thank you enough for the incredible support you’ve given me.
Mother, Vicki, you have been my rock from the very beginning. You read every single word of every page, even as I had cranked them out. You told me what fit, what didn’t. And gave me the love and support to continue on, even when I doubted myself. So from the depths of my heart, thank you, Mom. I could never have asked for a better mother.
Father, Dennis, you always reinforced my beliefs. Whether in my writing, or myself. I know we had our disputes about the continuation of the Jacob Fields series, ha! But I promise you this one is just as good. I know you’ll love it, no matter your personal feelings, and I love you for that. You are a fantastic dad, the best.
To my siblings, did you ever think I would have done this? Produced an actual novel that you could hold in your hands? I hope you’ll take the time to read these acknowledgements, even if it is only to see your own names, Eric, Jordan and Lauren. You three have been there with me from day one. We’ve had our sibling squabbles, but I love each of you greatly. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. We stick together, through thick and thin. Siblings always should. I hope my future family, and yours, will be like we are.
My friends, I have many of them, but thank you for everything you’ve done as well. Even if it was just buying this book. I appreciate the gesture. There are too many to name, but I love you all. But to name a few: Vaughn, you always knew I’d be a writer. I don’t know if you remember the time I wrote a Civil War novel in third grade. You made fun of me all the way through it, and it made me strive to be a better writer. Look where I am today, buddy. So for that, thank you! Zach, my best buddy. Thank you for all the laughs we’ve had and continue to have. None of this would have been possible without you, sir. Words cannot describe the support you’ve given me. Thank you for it all. Even though sometimes you make me angry when messing up my character on 2K. Thank you for letting me crash on your couch and just write. Giving me the nerve to actually chase my dreams, not letting anything stand in my way. Thank you!
I have to give a major shout out to Sasha, who perfected the map I had previously drawn. I am a terrible artist and she helped immensely! Thank you for all the hard work you put into the map.
A huge thank you to Austin Macauley, who took a chance on me. You have all been so professional and kind, I couldn’t have asked for more.
AJ, you did a fantastic job editing this novel. So I wanted to be sure that you got a shout out as well. Sorry about some of the redundant errors you had to fix! If any readers are actually reading this part, you’ll realise that some words have the English spelling and not American English. That’s all AJ, and I preferred it.
And lastly, to you, the reader. I want to thank you for picking up my book. If this is your first time reading one of my novels, thank you for taking a chance on something unknown. But that is where we find the most exciting things, is it not? Diving into the depths of something unfamiliar can be thrilling. I want to make a promise to you. Give me a few moments of your time, and I will give you a page-turner you won’t be able to put down.
Prologue

The Darkness
The horses moved toward the smoke on the horizon. The Imperial patrol, with their red capes and red plumes from their helmets made them distinct of who they were. They commanded respect and fear from the locals, but also, they were there to maintain order. Reports had been flowing in for weeks, barbaric tribes raiding and slaughtering entire villages. This wasn’t entirely unusual, but what was becoming a serious concern was the frequency in attacks as well as the growing numbers among the tribes.
Tales went around that these barbarians were more than human. Having above normal strength and reflexes. Using animals to do their bidding, but Emperor Artorius knew that all of these were just stories meant to spread fear into the populations of the Eternal Empire. The Emperor, Artorius, wanted to come along for this patrol. He was a skilled swordsman and accomplished leader. He had reformed the Empire back into a fighting force and even retook lands that had been lost for centuries.
But this was different. As he neared the smoke, the smell of rotting and burning flesh became overwhelming in his nostrils. They entered the village and he nearly vomited at the sight. Hundreds of dead people lay strewn about, men, women, and children.
“Gods above,” Artorius said as he put his hand up to his mouth and nose. “Not even the children were spared.”
An officer came up to him, “My lord, we should bury them.” Artorius just gave him a nod and the soldiers leapt from their horses and set out to dig graves.
Artorius helped his men dig ditches and lay the bodies down in them. He went from house to house looking for more when a man shouted his name. Artorius ran to where he heard the scream and found two of his soldiers standing over a half-dead man. Artorius knelt to be on eye level with the dying man.
“What happened here?” Artorius demanded.
The man looked up into Artorius’ eyes and whispered, “Damon.” Held out his hand, the skin had been entirely removed. The mark of the God of War and Destruction. Then the man passed into the underworld.
Artorius grew cold chills on his arms… Damon , he thought. He saw his men’s frightened faces and looked towards their Emperor for orders.
“We leave. Now,” Artorius said.
“But what about the bodies, sir?” a concerned officer asked.
“If you want to stay here and meet the deadliest god and the most hateful… be my guest. I will not put these men into his hands. He hates us and we hate him. Let’s be gone from this place.” With that he nearly burst into a run instead of a walk towards his horse as did his other troops and sped away from the burning village with haste, all eager to be away from there.
An officer rode beside him, “Do you really think it was Damon? It’s been two thousand years since he has interfered with men. I thought we taught him that last time he waged war with us.”
Artorius, not taking his eyes off the route in front of him, responded, “I don’t know, but I will not risk it. You know what he is capable of. And if he is rising again… we’re in a lot more trouble than I thought.”
