CHAPTER 1
STILLWATER
D r. Jacobs finished the day at his clinic by removing cataracts from an elderly lady and was looking forward to getting home to be with his wife Karen. As he pulled into their driveway, he was met by Karen in her jogging pants. “Honey, don’t you think it is getting late to go for a jog.”
“I won’t be long” she said. “Supper is ready so wait for me. I was busy today with shopping.” When he went in, he saw the note she had left so he washed up and caught the news. When she was late returning, he started to worry and drove the route they always use for running and she was nowhere to be seen. After an hour he called the police and they started looking as well, but she didn’t show up. By morning, he knew something terrible had happened. Two days later her body was found at the city dump. Detectives tracked her by going door to door to ask for homeowners to look at their outdoor home security cameras for help in tracking her and one showed her being pulled into a car then a second one showing the car’s license plate as it made a turn on the street that led to the dump site where her body was found. An arrest was made that evening charging a drifter, Alan Reese, with murder.
Dr. Jacobson was devastated and closed his practice for almost a month, but continued to pay his employees during the time the office was closed. Without Karen, there was no one to watch Ben, their dog, during the day so Dr. Jacobs started taking him to work with him and Ben would relax on a big dog bed in Dr. Jacob’s office.
Ben knew something was wrong and tried to comfort him because normally Karen and Doc took him to the park to play two or three days a week.
On Sunday, he took Ben to the park and parked at the last exit. This is an area which had a grassy area on both sides of the park suitable for picnics.
