DEDICATION
This book of poetry is dedicated to my wonderful, beloved children Mike, Kate, Mary and Martin and to their beautiful offspring.

INTRODUCTION
In 1998, in preparation for Thanksgiving dinner, Kathleen Dunleavy, matriarch of an enlarging family, decided to write a poem as the family’s Thanksgiving prayer-before-dinner. There would be a verse for each family member. What began as eight verses in 1998 has grown to twenty verses in 2016, (with couples coupled). In 2017, a verse will be added for a great grandson who will be arriving in July.
Most verses are descriptive of achievements, one to two each year are devoted to the family’s Dad who died in 1995, and some are humorous or divulge a family secret.
In addition to the collection of Thanksgiving Prayer-Poems, Kathleen wrote a powerful poem on 9/11 after guiding her staff at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where she was a Patient Care Director until her retirement in 2011, in preparing beds for the victims of the horrible holocaust.
More and more poems have been written on primarily solemn subjects and complete Mom’s Poetry , designed to give her children and grandchildren remembrances found in one central location.
In addition to her book of poetry, Kathleen has published clinical journal articles and two clinical textbook chapters.

CHILDBIRTH
At the start of every labor
A deepening peace sets in
A feeling of expectance
Something sacred to begin

A feeling of a miracle
About to manifest
God hovering very closely
To assure this child is blessed

The feeling is of moving
Into a deep and sacred place
And only do I awaken
When this baby meets my gaze

9/11
Our freedom is shattered
Our country’s at war
Our people are shaken
Right through to their core

The towers have fallen
So hard to believe
Destruction and death
Behind it did leave

Where did this come from
This horror so real
How could such a nightmare
Have struck us so near

Why did this happen
This carnage occur
How bless-ed our landscape
How peaceful we were

Incredible suffering
No end to the pain
It’s doubtful that ever
Our heartache will wane

Tragedy reigning
The death toll so high
The embers still rising
As far as the sky

Trying to find
Anyone we can save
No end to the rosters
Of helpers so brave

Will we ever recover
Know peace once again
Or does this awful happening
Signal an end

We’ve all come together
Created a bond
Our flags we are flying
Our uniforms donned

We ask for assistance
From heaven above
To help ease the burden
To bring back the doves

We pray for our friends
Who were struck down so hard
May they be eased from
The pain in their hearts

We thank you for leaving
Our family intact
Our help and assistance
We gladly give back

God bless our great Country
May peace come again
At best may we ask that
This holocaust end

God bless America
Ever so free
And God bless our planet
Of land and of sea
