Chapter 1
The Struggle of Being a Single Mom
Emily, a very good child, was six years of age when she found out that she was having a baby sister. She was very excited because she wanted someone who she could play her Barbie dolls and watch cartoons with. Her mom, Joanna, was eight months pregnant and had Emily help her out a lot with things around the house because her dad John was always traveling for sales. Unfortunately, Emily had to witness arguing between her parents whenever her dad got back from a trip.
Her mom always pressured her dad to find a new career, something that would keep him nearby, especially while she’s pregnant. Emily would just cry and run into her room, shutting the door. One night her dad came in really drunk, and he wasn’t aware that his little girl was still awake. Her mom quickly grabbed him and pulled him into the room, yelling at him. She screamed out, “How could you be so irresponsible and inconsiderate?”
John was so drunk that he didn’t argue. He just replied, “I’m going to bed, we’ll talk in the morning.”
The very next morning, when Emily walked into her parents’ bedroom, she noticed that her mom was crying. She asked her mom what was wrong, and she replied, “Your dad is gone, sweetheart.”
Emily didn’t know what she meant, so she explained to her that her dad left early this morning, and there’s a big possibility that she may never see him again. Emily cried out, repeatedly saying, “No, no, I want Daddy!”
Joanna just held her in her arms, comforting and assuring her that everything is going to be all right.
Hours later, Joanna’s sister Nicole, who lived in New York, came by to stay for a while to help out during her sister’s pregnancy. By the time she walked through the door, she was greeted by a happy six-year-old. It made Nicole so joyful to see her as she said, “Wow, you got so big!”
It had been one year since she saw them. Joanna asked her sister how life is in the Big Apple, and she replied, “You know, New York is New York!”
Joanna said, “You should just move here in Mesa, Arizona, so we can all be together,” but Nicole chuckles, and she replies, “You know how much I hate the heat.”
The night came so the family was sitting down, having dinner. As Joanna was getting up, walking toward the sink to put away her dishes, she suddenly stopped. Nicole looked over and saw her holding her stomach, and so she asked her if everything is okay. Joanna looked down and said, “No, I don’t think so, my water just broke!”
Emily didn’t know what that meant, so she asked her aunt, but her aunt told her there was no time to explain and said, “We have to take your mom to the hospital right now!”
Nicole rushed her sister to Banner Health, where she would deliver her baby. Unfortunately, her doctor couldn’t make it, so she would have to deliver it with someone else. Joanna insisted that they bring in Dr. Kirchner because she’s been there the whole time, but she had no luck.
It was August 15, nine o’clock on a Sunday, when Joanna would deliver a precious baby girl. Nicole went to get Emily to bring her back, and Emily was in awe when she saw her new sister. Emily asked her mom what her name was, and her mom replied, “Ashley.”
Nicole got stiff and held her face as tears drop because she knew the reasoning behind that. They lost a sister growing up because of a drunk driver. Nicole went to Joanna and told her that she loves her very much. The doctors asked them to leave the room while Joanna gets some rest.
The next day Nicole and Emily were able to bring Joanna and the new addition to the family back home. Joanna told her sister she’s very hungry. Nicole asked her what she would like, and she replied, “I would like a pizza from Spinato’s Pizzeria and Family Kitchen.”
Emily yelled out, “Ooh, I love that place, it’s my favorite!”
Emily was bragging to her aunt how good it was, and she assured her that she was going to like it. Nicole laughed as she said, “Okay! Okay! I can’t wait to try it!”
As they arrived home after getting the pizza, there was a strange car sitting in front of their house. Once the car noticed that they were home, the car quickly drove off. Nicole turned to her sister and asked if she’s ever seen that car before. Joanna replied, “No, I haven’t.”
They got to the door and noticed there was a note slightly hanging, taped to the porch light. Nicole said, “This is not the way we planned on coming home with a new baby.”
They opened the note, and Joanna saw that it was from an unidentified person. The note just simply read, “I’m sorry!”
Nicole assumed that it was from Joanna’s husband, but Joanna told her that she knows his handwriting and didn’t recognize the car. Joanna was tired and hungry, so she insisted that everyone get situated and eat. Nicole took one bite into the pizza and looked at Emily and said, “Wow, this is delicious!”
Emily replied, “See, I told you!”
Two weeks passed, and it was time for Nicole to head back. Joanna and Emily didn’t want to see her leave, but her job only approved two weeks of vacation for her. Nicole promised them that she wouldn’t stay away long this time. As the Lyft driver came and picked her up, Joanna hugged Emily and said, “It’s just us three now, kiddo.”
Emily, with a huge smile on her face, told her mom, “I love you and Ashley.”
That night Emily started to get a little sick. Her mom knew that she just had too much pizza for the night, so she just gave her some medicine for her stomach. That Saturday Joanna decided that it was time to take Ashley out of the house. She asked Emily how she felt about going to the zoo. Emily, full of so much joy, yelled out, “Yes! Yes! I love animals!”
Her mom just laughed and replied, “Okay, let’s go!”
They arrived at the zoo, and Emily had to use the bathroom.
When Joanna and her children came out, she quickly noticed that there was another note in her baby’s stroller. She opened the note and saw that it was from the same handwriting from the note before. This time the note read, “Please forgive me.”
Joanna didn’t want to spoil Emily’s fun so, she acted as if everything was okay. When they got home, Joanna told Emily to go ahead and take a bath while she gets dinner ready. She called and told her sister about the note. Her sister insisted she call the police. Joanna said, “Tell them what, that I received two letters from an unidentified person who didn’t leave any threats?”
Nicole made her sister promise her that if it gets worse that she would call the police.
Two years now passed, and little baby Ashley was walking and talking almost like a pro. Emily was now eight and making new friends. No matter how many friends she would make, nothing could compare to the joy that her little sister brings to her. One afternoon Joanna was baking cookies, and Ashley got a hold of the flour and spilled it everywhere, including on herself. Emily decided to take the blame so she wouldn’t get into any trouble. This would go on for many times because Emily had so much love for her. Joanna caught Emily one time, and she told her that one day she would have to let her sister take full responsibility. The weekend was approaching, and Joanna received an unwanted late-night phone call. It was from the hospital in New York. Once Joanna heard the doctor say Long Island, she knew that it could only involve one person, so she braced herself for what she was about to hear.
The doctor asked, “Do you know Nicole?”
Joanna replied, “Yes, she’s my sister.”
The doctor told her that Nicole went unconscious. In panic, Joanna asked what happened, but the doctor said that they are running tests right now.
Joanna pleaded to the doctor to let her know as soon as they found out. The doctor assured her that they would. Though the news is very important, Joanna hesitated to tell Emily. Joanna would pray all weekend in hopes that everything was okay with her sister. Emily cried out to God, saying, “Dear Lord, I already lost one sister, so please don’t let me lose another!”
Emily was outside of her door and overheard her, and so she walked in and asked her mom what she meant by that. Joanna kindly explained to her what was going on, and Emily began to cry.
Her mom comforted her, telling her that everything w
