Description

Awkward, shy, antisocial, bashful and overly self-conscious are some of the words that describe seventeen year old Ellie Eguchi. But her juxtaposing nature of caring, assured self esteem, confidence and unflinching spirit are what keep her in a positive mindset with an optimistic outlook on life.
At school, she keeps to herself and prefers to eat lunch away from everyone else. Torn between taking over the family bread and sweets shop or choosing a career weighs her down more than usual.
As a way to ease the boredom of her mundane everyday life, she holds an IRL meet with five other youths who all share the same common desire as her: a desire to interact with the world around them. These five will be the ones who open the door of her sheltered world and show her that life isn’t as boring as she makes it out to be.

Before you begin reading this story, I’d like to note a few things that went into the inspiration and making of this work.
“Ellie” was the freshest idea I’ve had up to February 2019 (That’s when I first published the book on Amazon). It came about as a result of watching several anime and stories from all genres but mostly of drama, teenagers, school kids, and romances.
A few of the anime that inspired and/or influenced the story include O reGairu : Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU), Baka to Test to Shokanjuu (Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts), Clannad , Glasslip , HenNeko (The “Hentai” Prince and the Stony Cat), One Week Friends, Just Because!, K-On! , Kaminomi : Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai (The World God Only Knows), Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You , Koi wa Ameagari no You ni (After the Rain, Kokoro Connect), Nisekoi , OreImo: Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai (My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute), Kids on the Slope , Your Lie in April , Celestial Method , My Little Monster , Toradora! , In Search of the Lost Future , Kiss Him, Not Me!
A few television shows and films also greatly influenced the story in some way. For example, in volume 2, Noel’s new apartment in Hachioji is a direct reference to the apartment that Hisashi and Nao share in the show Good Morning Call .
Sometimes, you can clearly see the direct influences some shows have had such as in the example above. Other times, it’s more subtle.
In chapter 4, “How Well Do You Play?” we see the two main characters, William and Naomi, having a musical dual on the piano. To an avid anime watcher, that scene can be directly linked to being inspired by Your Lie in April .
In the opening scenes, we see the character William Shinyo enjoying a nice spring day outside in his tent. He is laid back and reaching out for the sky much like Kakeru Okikura in Glasslip .
With this story, I wanted to create my own anime. So in that sense, each chapter should feel like an episode. I specifically wanted a character who was a Japanese high school girl and for the setting, of course, it would have to be Japan.
The first-person narrative aspect of the story was unintentional at first as I wanted to see if I could write a story from the perspective of someone else’s shoes, or eyes, whichever you prefer. As I kept writing more into the story, I kept seeping my own life into it, adding bits of myself into the character Ellie Eguchi. Because of that, in the end, Ellie turned out to be a reflection of myself, making the story, essentially, a reflection.
For privacy reasons, I will not list the details of the story that are direct truths about myself because, as Noèle would say, they’re too intimate to share with the likes of you.
These small subtle details are what built this story. The foundation being the culture of Japan itself. And if you too are a huge otaku such as myself, you understand that wonder, excitement even, that stems from that highly influential island in the east. That said, Ellie is not a guide to Japan or Japanese culture. It is more a celebration of that culture as we are experiencing at the moment. And that is what it comes down to: experiences at the moment. I believe that is what this story is ultimately about. It is about the journey, the small things, those pockets of happiness and good. The short moments you live for, that’s what this story is all about. It is pure elation and just positive energy. It is fiction, yes, but if it can inspire people in a positive way and perhaps, bring them happiness, then my mission and message would have been a success. I had a blast writing this story, and I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did writing it.
—Sincerely, Enrique.
P.S. I finished writing this intro on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 2:15 p.m. Just thought I ought to let you know. :)
P.S.S. Amazon prints out two “extra” pages (four if you count them front and back) that you can use to write down your immediate thoughts. I think that’s quite handy.
P.S.S.S. I wrote some more stuff in it. Some stuff about the first-person perspective. Finished adding that on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 2:38 a.m. :^I P.S.S.S.S. Ignore P.S.S.
P.S.S.S.S.S. Changed the font from Times New Roman to Lora, including the footer page numbers. Drastic changes to the format and layout; reduction of font size from 12 to 11, spacing from 1.5 to 1, and ellipses placement inside quotations. And minor grammar changes.

It is formatted like a play so character names will be on the left with their lines next to them. Pretty self-explanatory.
The use of ellipsis (. . .) indicates a moment of silence during a scene or a character’s silence before or after lines. Ellipsis creates ambience. Ambience sets certain tones and moods. Between lines or in the middle of a character’s line, an ellipsis represents a pause to show hesitation, uncertainty, irony, and humor depending on the context.
The exclamation mark (!) indicates surprise or an interruption.
The question mark (?) can also indicate a surprise but with confusion, just confusion, and it is also seen together with the exclamation mark to indicate a “surprised confusion” or after a line of dialogue to indicate an annoyed or agitated response.
You may notice a lot of spaces throughout. Those spaces are vital to how the story plays out in your head. Think of it as scenes in a movie moving seamlessly from one to the next.
Internalizations are easily identified by italics. Just like the ellipsis, you will see a lot of internalizations, especially, and obviously, Ellie’s. Also, note that internalizations without a character name beside them are all Ellie’s. So with that in mind, naturally, the story narration, description of events, etc., are to be read in Ellie’s voice. (If you can imagine such a thing. I know I can.)
Any words italicized inside quotations are to be stressed. They are to be read either with emphasis, in an overly dramatic way, or in a sarcastic way depending on the context.
Well, without further ado, please, flip the page and enjoy the story.

How Boring
April 8 th , Monday
ACT 1
Scene 1
That alarm, whose tune has been waking me up for fourteen years, rings yet again.
As I reluctantly get out of bed, I make my way toward the bathroom, half asleep, eyes still adjusting to the dark room.
After brushing my teeth, I stare at my disheveled hair. And begin brushing it, half-heartedly.
Ellie:
. . .

My uniform lays neatly folded on the chair.
ACT 1
Scene 2
Downstairs, in the kitchen.
Alistair:
“Oh . . . Ellie . . .

You look good.”
Eiha:
“I can’t believe my uniform fits you perfectly!”
Ellie:
“I can’t believe they still use the same uniform from the nineteen eighties.”
Minato:
“You look just like your grandmother did back then.”
