DEDICATION
F irst, any dedication should go to our life-giver and Creator who without him, this book would never have happened. Psalms 83:18
Next, I want to dedicate this book, to my wife, Sandra Benson Roberts. Sandra has been a great encouragement to me during the writing by the patience she has shown, giving me space to write when she wanted my attention. She never let up on her love for me but continued to embrace me with hugs and kisses when I was discouraged.
Next, I would like to thank Webster for a fine New World College Dictionary. It has helped me greatly.
Writing any kind of book is not easy. This is my second book. The first was a biography of my life and Vietnam, it took me years to write. It was mainly for therapy for PTSD and amnesia.
Sandra, again has helped me greatly with my PTSD, and I have a service dog named Dexter. He is a fullblooded Rottweiler, fully trained, and does wonders in aiding me as a service dog.

INTRODUCTION
M y name is James Milton Roberts, and this is a book based on fiction. The part about the Civil War Contents is mostly true. There are other names and places in the book that are true. You should look at the book as a book of fiction; never try to base it on fact. Jake Strader never existed; the name Strader I saw on the side of a cargo truck at an intersection. This book has been going over and over in my mind for about a year and a half, if not longer, until it was completed on February 23, 2021.
I am a disabled veteran 100% totally and permanently disabled due to a service-connected disability from Viet Nam. I have free time to spend writing, but words and thoughts do not come easily for me. My next book should not take near as long as the subject is already set in my mind; it will start where this one left off.
This book is about a man with a dream that he expects to last about eighty-five to ninety years at the most. Yet, that dream goes on for over three hundred years with no end in sight. The “generations” of the pirates’ children continue to live that long, and so the story.
It starts in late 1698. Captain Jake Strader and his men are a band of very successful pirates. By 1705 they are looking for a place of refuge, to live out the rest of their lives in peace, and not to be hanged.
Captain Drake Strader dreams that his men and their women will live the rest of their lives in freedom in a refuge to themselves, till they die never to be hanged, with children and happy family lives.
Looking for such a place, they find it in a swamp in North Carolina. They live in the swamp up till the Civil War and they have eight men that are taken into the Confederate Army. Then the story centers on the battles of the Civil War and these two men’s lives.
It will have stories about the battles during the war and events that took place, including names of the Generals involved in the battles, number of casualties, and total number fighting.
Events in the swamp will be about the different kinds of animals in Goshen Swamp. Goshen Swamp does exist in N.C. My father owned a farm when I was a young kid, and Goshen Swamp was at the rear of the farm. I spent a lot of time fishing in that old swamp. There are some pictures of what the swamp looks like. People today with modern machinery have been able to go into some parts of Goshen Swamp and pull out logs of cypress trees and some different hardwood.
The story of the swamp is an interesting one to tell if you like one of adventure and surprises of the unknown. There are a lot of treasure chests that are held by the 129 pirate family heads, filled with gold and silver. There is a group of runaway slaves that join the camp of the pirates and spend the rest of their lives in the camp.
There is a lot that unfolds in the story as it continues and many new characters, leading to a central family line. It is a book that is simple to read and not filled with complicated words.
