Prologue
I felt it again last night, the dark pull. It had plagued Eva for as long as she could remember. It was always swimming in the dark recesses of her mind, just out of reach or sight. It longed for her to lose herself entirely in its grasp; to give herself over and let it take control. That much she knew…she felt.
The sliding of the chair legs against the hardwood brought her out of her reverie. Damn, he’s sitting down! What was the plan? Drop your book, Eva.
She pushed her chair out to stand up. The target had taken a seat behind her, his coffee already set on the table. He reached down to unzip his laptop case sitting on the floor. Eva dropped her book on the floor as she stood up, just as she had rehearsed. The man turned to see what had made the sound. He eyed the book and reached down to pick it up. She feigned surprise that her novel had somehow slipped her grasp.
The aroma was almost overpowering. He smelled like body spray and bleach. He was manicured head to toe, a fresh haircut, clean shaven, and a crisp white shirt over dark jeans. It was part of his cleansing ritual. He had come here to hunt, cleaned and sanitized in preparation for the kill.
“Piers Anthony? I haven’t heard of him. Any good?” He asked with a predatory smile, handing the book to Eva.
“Oh, it’s excellent,” Eva answered flirtatiously as she took the offered book back. “Thank you,” she replied as she brushed a lock of her dark hair behind her ear. Eva saw his eyes fall to her blouse. She had purposefully left the top three buttons undone.
She did not have the most significant assets, but she knew how to show the girls off. She chose her outfit with care for this mission. She wore a sleeveless emerald green blouse with simple stitching down the front, untucked and almost form-fitting, and black yoga pants; just his style. She smiled again at him as she tucked the book under her arm and made her way to the bathrooms in the back.
The man stood up from his chair and followed Eva, just as she had planned. She rounded the corner to the bathroom and shot him a sidelong glance as she disappeared. She took the out-of-order sign off the restroom door that she had placed earlier and walked in. Moments later, the door opened, and the man stepped in.
“Sir, this is the women’s restroom,” Eva said, looking up at him as she stood next to the sink.
“I saw the way you were looking at me,” the man said in a slithering tone, leering at Eva, “I know what you really want.”
“And, what is that?” Eva asked, playing along.
He said nothing as he threw the latch on the door and advanced on her. Eva played as though frightened, already knowing how he would respond to it, “Don’t worry, honey, I’m just here to show you a good time.”
The man came to stand face-to-face with Eva and looked her up and down like a prize he had won. Eva went along with the show and breathed heavily. He unbuttoned the fourth button on her blouse, now revealing her lacey black bra. His breathing grew heavy and his excitement built. Eva put a hand on his chest as though he should stop. The man looked up.
“Sit down,” Eva said in a sultry tone. She motioned to the toilet in the stall and started walking him back. The man, enjoying the playfulness of his newest quarry, sat down as requested. Eva began to dance slowly, unbuttoning the next button and the next until the front was open and her stomach was exposed. She drew her hand down her navel.
“I have something for you,” Eva said in a low husky manner.
“Oh, yeah,” the creepy man replied, rubbing on himself.
Suddenly, Eva opened up her blouse to expose the suppressed Sig-Sauer P226 taped to the side of her rib cage. She ripped it out and came on target. Three rounds in rapid succession fired from the barrel. The man barely had enough time to register what was happening. He died still holding on to the only thing in his life he had ever listened to.
“Bitch,” Eva said with a sarcastic tone in her usual style.
She made it to the alleyway when the screams rang out from inside the café. Eva smiled at her handiwork as she continued down the alley to the adjoining street.
Too close this time. I’ve got to get a handle on that.

Chapter One
A loud voice in the hallway pulled Eva from her thoughts. She recognized that voice. Derek. Eva looked over to Abigail who was already attuned to the interaction in the hallway. “They’ll see him!” Eva whispered her yell.
“He is not our concern,” Abigail said, “The magic will hold to keep us invisible if we stay here and finish our work.”
“To hell with you, lady! Derek is not just some piece of meat,” Eva replied with venom. She made a bee-line for the front door, pulling her Glock 43 from inside her waistband, “Magic or no magic, he’s my friend.”
She swung open the door as she heard Derek arguing with the man in the hallway. The guard had become wise to the fact that Derek had intimate knowledge of Eva’s whereabouts and had quickly begun to exploit it. Brynjar’s power had shielded their approach from the guard’s sight earlier, but they had not accounted on Derek showing up. The guard had Derek pinned against the wall with a gun drilled into his eye socket. Derek’s slight frame was no match for the bulky man’s strength. Derek’s expertise lied in the realm of computers and finance, not fighting. The man was yelling at Derek to tell him where Eva was .
I’m right here, d-bag. Without hesitation, Eva aimed her pistol and fired a round through the guard’s ear hole. The guard dropped to the floor, dead. Eva followed it with two more shots to the chest as she came upon Derek, his hands still blocking his face from the onslaught.
“The hell are you doing here?” Eva said as she reached her hand to Derek. Derek opened his eyes in disbelief, as though he could not believe he was just saved. Not the first time.
“I hadn’t…” Derek stammered.
“Rhetorical question, Einstein,” Eva interrupted, “We gotta move.”
“Right,” Derek replied. He had seen that look in Eva’s eyes before and had learned to shut his trap and throw his game-face on till all was calm.
Eva helped Derek up as Abigail exited the apartment. “They will know he is dead; we have to leave,” Abigail said, her gaze fixed on the dead man.
“It’s just a hired hand,” Eva replied, turning to regard Abigail. She caught a glimpse of Derek’s face, who was looking over her shoulder. Eva turned to the downed guard. In death, the man had transformed into a hideous beast. “Holy hell! What is that?” Eva exclaimed.
Abigail looked at Eva, then turned back to the man, and replied as though the answer was obvious, “He is Ra’Day.”
“I had no idea that is what they looked like,” Eva said in disgust.
“The Ra’Day take many forms. He is Maghentum. Uglier than most, but they are good soldiers. It must have had a masking weave to disguise its true form…” Abigail paused and thought about her own remarks, “This makes sense; Maghentum are practitioners of the glaspear weave.”
“That thing is what shot at me earlier?” Eva stated more than questioned as she regarded the disgusting humanoid form lying dead in the hallway. He had bulbous eyes, too large for the face, round as it was. The lips were thin and almost non-existent, which stood in stark
