Gratitude Floods my Heart!
I thank the many friends who encouraged me along this writing journey. God laid this on my heart over 20 years ago. When I finally transitioned into a season conducive to writing all God laid on my heart, God surrounded me with encouragers and helpers! I extend an extra special thanks to Beth Hall for diligently reviewing and noting typos, and much more! Beth, your loving support fueled my passion to completion! Then there is the amazing artist, Chalmer Hall, who jumped in at the last minute to sketch the cover and all the chapter images! Chalmer, I cannot find the words to fully express my gratitude, or how impressed I am by your talent! And, I cannot forget Pastor Andrew Arndt! Pastor Andrew, I doubt I would have made it to the publishing stage without your guidance and encouragement! I am so grateful God led me to NLE when it opened!
To all of you, mentioned and unmentioned, who shared this journey with me, I give you my love and deep gratitude! May God bless each of you beyond your wildest dreams!
Your Sis in Christ,
Gayle Marie

Introduction
Emily lived a frazzled life from birth to the present times. As a child, she lived in fear every day, fear her dad would become angry; fear of harsh, painful punishment – even for things Emily never did; fear of never being loved; fear she wouldn’t be everything her parents demanded of her. As a result, Emily never felt like she belonged. Friends betrayed her, and her mother controlled what her father didn’t control. Together they stripped Emily of every ounce of who God had created her to be. As a result, Emily found very little joy in life.
Though Emily feared her father, she also admired his skills. He could fix anything and build whatever he set his mind to. One spring, Emily quietly watched as her father created a pontoon boat by welding barrels together, adding a floor, railings, and a captain’s station to steer the motor. Building it was an act of love for his parents, Emily’s Grandma and Grandpa Jenkins.
Emily’s dad had learned from the best! Grandpa Jenkins built their family home back in the early 1930s. Heat radiated from the solidly constructed walls, and it was warm and cozy even on the windiest winter days. Grandpa J built a solid, warm house, but Grandma J gave it genuine warmth.
Grandma J was not only Emily’s most loved grandma but also Emily’s favorite person in the world! There was one place on the earth where Emily felt truly loved, safe, and free to be who she was, and that was with Grandma J! No one else in Emily’s world showed her real love, acceptance, and patience with nurturing warmth. Grandma J would invite her into the kitchen to make cookies, mix up cakes, help cut donuts, and enjoy a unique soda with a colorful paper straw, usually a pink straw. Grandma J grew Sweet Peas in her backyard, Emily’s favorite flower. When Emily’s birthday rolled around, Grandma J baked her favorite cake – angel food, and decorated it with Sweet Peas blossoms of every color. Every year she made Emily feel special; the favorite part of her birthday celebration was being around Grandma J! Who included Emily in everything she did.
Grandpa Jenkins bought Emily a small plastic sewing machine that used a hand crank to move the needle up and down. Grandma J’s heavy black Singer sewing machine had a hand crank too, but once it got started by hand, her grandma used a foot pedal. The two of them would sit side by side and sew for hours by the light of the two windows Grandpa had built into the corner of the room. While Grandma J mended or created something from fabrics, Emily sewed pieces of scrap fabric together for a scarf or doll blanket. For Emily, there was no place on earth more precious and heartwarming than being there beside her kind, loving, tender-voiced grandmother! She was safe, secure, warm, and loved! Grandma Jenkins also taught Emily to knit scarves and potholders to give as presents. Emily loved to make and give gifts.
Emily grew up with another set of grandparents in the same hometown, Grandma and Grandpa Hopstead. Their house did not feel warm, safe, or cozy. It wasn’t the construction of the house but rather the coldness and critical spirit of Grandma H. It never failed, when at Grandma H’s, Emily always got into trouble for things she never said or did. One day Grandma H looked straight at her younger cousin Mary as Mary dumped the candy dish on the living room floor and then yelled at four-year-old Emily. Just like at home, Emily was not safe. Grandpa H never said anything, but he saw the harshness towards Emily and tried to make up for it.
Grandpa H made Emily laugh and loved her in his unique way. He was Emily’s fun grandpa! Every year they went to the circus, where Emily ate all the peanuts, popcorn, Crackerjacks, and cotton candy her little heart desired! He took her to the State Fair every year, too, filling her tummy with everything she asked for and letting her ride on every ride she wanted. Before Emily was old enough for the rides at the fair, Grandpa H took her to the rides at KidsLand. From there, they went to see the animals in the “stink” house; the summer heat made it smell awful! But Grandpa H never complained; he just patiently waited while Emily stood mesmerized by the monkeys’ acrobatics, stared at the tigers, and roared at giant lions as she said goodbye to them. Only once did one startle Emily with a roar back; Grandpa H was there to quickly snatch her up in his big strong arms. Grandpa H made Emily feel safe and loved; he brought fun into Emily’s life.
Emily’s mom wasn’t much different from her mom, Grandma Hopstead; she never seemed to approve of Emily and would also blame Emily for things she didn’t do. One summer, five neighbor girls, ages 6-7, were playing dress-up in Samantha’s attic full of clothes. Emily spotted a cute blue one-piece swimsuit with sparkling stars covering the front. Emily tried it on, paraded around like a model for the other girls to see, and then put it back. A few days later, Emily’s mom asked if she knew where the swimsuit was; Samantha’s mom had called wondering if Emily had taken it. Emily assured her mom that she had put it back in the box in the attic. As Emily eavesdropped on her mom’s call to Samantha’s mom, it became clear that her mom did not believe her. Emily’s mom had apologetic words with Samantha’s mom and assured her she would buy a replacement swimsuit. Once again, Emily was assumed guilty of something she did not do. As Emily grew up, she felt more and more like a responsibility to her mother, nothing more. She often wondered if her mom blamed her for being born, causing her to stay with Emily’s harsh and abusive dad. Sadly, Emily grew up in deep sadness and the pain of not feeling safe or loved in her own hom
