CHAPTER ONE
It was a cold winter day in Albany, Georgia.
Min and her mother Monia were walking from the north side all the way to the heart of the south side, struggling to find a warm place to stay and food to eat. Min was about 9 years old. She was a bright child, but had so much hatred in her heart. She knew the difference between loving someone and hurting them. She also knew the way her mother treated her was hurtful.
As they were walking Min looked up at her mother and asked “Mama I’m hungry, when are we gonna stop and get something to eat?”
Min, Monia replied, you talk too much; you know that don’t you? Irritated, she continued to scold Min. Dammitt, I told you I’m going to get you something to eat. Did you hear anything I told you? “Yes mama,” Min said, “but you told me that an hour ago.” You’re so damn nosey Min. I’m going to get you something to eat, but first we have to stop at Mr. Brown’s house. “Again mama?” Min whined. I don’t like going over there. Do you want to eat?” Monia snapped back. Do you want me to buy you those shoes you like? Then yes Min, you got to make Mr. Brown happy.
But why can’t you make him happy? Min sulked. He’s your friend not mine. Just shut the fuck up Min, OK!?
“Okay mama.”
Min was afraid of Mr. Brown, she knew he was an evil man. So as they were walking down North David, Min wanted to cry. She knew it would make her mother mad, so Min held back her tears.
When they arrived at Mr. Brown’s house, Min took in every detail of the house. She noticed the white door steps that had pink and purple dots on them.
Min made a mental note to never forget this place, swearing one day when she was older, she would come back and burn it down.
It took Monia knocking on the door four hard times before someone came to it yelling, “who is it?” Monia replied, who you think it is, jackass, now open the door. The door opened and Min took a step back, afraid of what was about to happen. She was definitely afraid.
Mr. Brown stood there looking down at Min and said, there’s my favorite girl, come here Min. Are you gonna make Uncle Brown happy? Come on in, y’all. They walked into Mr. Brown’s house.
Min noticed how happy her mother was once they were inside. Min knew every time her mother got that little white rock it would make her super happy; it would make her dance and smile.
Just then Mr. Brown went over to Min, grabbed her hand and placed it into his pants. This caused Min to jump back and when she did her mother went up to her and slapped her so hard that tears formed in her eyes. Min wanted to cry out, but she knew her mother hated that, so Min fought back the tears. Monia was about to say something and there came a knock at the front door. As Monia opened the door she realized it was the Albany Drug Unit and before she could say anything they bum-rushed the place.
All the yelling and screaming scared Min so she ran to the corner, crawled up and cried. A female officer noticed Min, walked over to her, took her little hand in her own, and told Min she was safe. Min looked up then and realized she was going to be okay. Hey, what’s your name, little one? I’m Officer Parker. Min looked directly into her eyes and replied “I’m Mincey.” Well Mincey I am here to help you so don’t be afraid. Now please come with me, let’s take a walk outside.
“What about Mama?” Min asks “Is she coming with us?”
Officer Parker bent down on one knee and said, “It’s possible she won’t, but you are going to be safe until she can.” Min wanted to cry but she didn’t because her mother was watching her. Just then Monia yells “You better not say a damn thing to nobody!” Officer Parker looks down at Min and asks “What is your mother talking about?” But Min didn’t speak, she was too afraid to talk about what happened or what was about to happen to her before.
When they brought Mr. Brown out, he looked at Min and said out loud “you say something and I’ll kill you.” Officer Parker looked at the suspect, then at Mincey and noticed how frightened she was. Officer Parker called Sargent Walker and told him they needed to take the little girl to the hospital right away. They put Mincey in the back seat of their squad car and raced to the hospital at full speed, sirens blazing. When they arrived at the hospital the nurse manning the front desk came out to see what was wrong. Sgt. Walker told the nurse the little girl with them needs a body test to see if she’s been violated in any way.
An hour later the doctor who ran the tests came up to the officers and explained Mincey had indeed been sexually abused by someone. Officer Parker looked at Sgt. Walker and said, “That son of a bitch touched that poor little girl.” She then asked the doctor if she could go and see Mincey and sit with her. That would be a good idea, the doctor replied. Someone she trusts should definitely be there for her at a time like this. As Officer Parker began walking towards the elevators, the doctor called out “she’s on the second floor, room 202.” As officer Parker was walking down the second floor hall, she got lost in thought. She was heartbroken, knowing everything she worked for was on the line because she knew all too well about being sexually assaulted. She knew Mincey would one day reflect on it all and began to push people away, even the people that care about her.
As officer Parker stood there lost in thought she was interrupted by a voice behind her. She turned around and noticed a woman from children services. Her heart fell to the ground because she knew the state really didn’t care where they placed kids, especially little girls.
“Hello Officer Parker” reading her nametag, “my name is Jineta Marshall, I am here for Mincey.” Shaking Jineta’s proffered hand she replies, Hello Ms. Jineta, nice to meet you. Looking at the door of room 202, Parker quietly asks, Ms. Jineta, could you do me a favor? And what would that be? Could you keep her safe from the monsters who sometimes creep up on her? Jineta takes a moment, then says, I will do my very best to place her in a great home with people that will love her. Thank you Ms. Jienta. Excuse me for a moment, I would like to say farewell to Min now. Jineta, nodding her head, says “of course” and steps back. Officer Parker just knew Jienta was lying about helping, for that’s the same lie she was told, before she got placed in that monster’s house. Shaking those thoughts from her head, she goes into room 202. She spots Min lying on the bed. She walks over to her. She then takes Min’s hand, and while rubbing it, tells her to be strong.
Min looks up at officer Parker and asks if the other woman is here to take her away.
“Yes,” Officer Parker replies. She’s here to take you to a place where no one will hurt you, but you need to be strong, OK? I need you to believe in yourself.
Min started crying because she was confused and lost. Trying to comfort Min, while telling her to be strong she asks, “Min how did you know that woman was here to take you?” Min shrugs saying, I just felt it, then I saw it in her eyes.
That’s a gift Min, Officer Parker said. I want you to use that gift God has given you, would you do that for me? Yes Min replied, “I will”
“If you listen to God using the gift he has given you, you will be 4 steps ahead of everyone else. If you see it or feel it, use it, okay?” Min just stared at her with tears in her big eyes. Officer Parker hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. When Parker removes herself, she notices Sgt. Walker gives her that look that says “Stay out of it.” But he knew she couldn’t as long as she had breath in her body.
Ms. Jineta walks over and asks Mincey, “Are you ready to go to a place where it’s safe? Min nodded and was about to get off the bed when Sgt. Walker takes her in his arms and helps her down. He looks Mincey in the eyes, squeezes her shoulders, and tells her to be strong. Min just smiles because she knows they were there to help. She then gets dressed, walks over to Ms. Jineta, takes her hand and they walk out the door. As she gets to Ms. Jineta’s car she asks Min if she’s hungry and Min says yes. We’re going to get your belly full Mincey, okay?
After a short drive they arrived at the youth center. Min was scared because she’s never been anywhere without her mother. But Ms.Jineta kept telling her that she was okay and nothing was going to happen to her. Min took a breath, smiled
