Description

Often in our chasing of the hours we get lost, defeated, and worse - deluded, by the results.
The poet provides solace to such weary travellers trudging through the by-lanes of Life. Through easy rhyme, she not only voices some deep-seated questions, but places arguments and answers that open one’s mind to the real meaning of life.
What is in it for the youthful adventurers, for those yet to set upon the stormy voyage of life? The questions that get pushed aside by their youthful curiosity are brought to the surface. Premises are placed and through lucid reasoning counterpoints are provided revealing a profundity beyond the seeming simplicity. Profound yet lyrical, here is a form of writing that relaxes even as it appeals to the deep thinker.
Tough yet gentle, adamant yet understanding, difficult yet easy: yes paradoxes rule the pages, and the light heartedness of the author’s writing carries the reader through them all with a smile.

End Note

When words take flight from the pen I hold
I seem to be by my Master controlled…
For the thoughts that arise in my mind
For the way they just turn into rhyme -
I am but a scribe for Powers Divine!

Uvaacha is a Sanskrit word which means ‘said’.

For Baba
Thank you for introducing me to fantastic dreams and believing they can come true!
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I am grateful to all who have touched my life in one way or another, for you have in some way featured in my thoughts presented here.
I owe my parents, my sister and my nephew my first thanks for making a special place for me in their lives. I am grateful to my extended family and friends for bearing with my deviant thoughts and ways.
My role as a teacher made me realise how dependent I am on my students and my gratitude to this community is immense. A special mention must be made of the two Chinmaya Mission schools where I spent some fantastic years as a teacher, yet, learning, living, growing and experiencing life in some surrealness. Much of what I present in these pages comes from the understanding of life I gained here.
BOOK 1 FAITH
I have travelled strange roads of Life. Some journeys were along known paths, some along unknown ones, some tranquil paths, and some quite the opposite. Many times I have found myself alone even when the paths were populated. Surprisingly, when on lonely paths, I have experienced company, and my conversations during these walks are what strengthens my faith in Life being the work of Art of a Master Planner. Surrendering to the Plan is an act of Faith that brings peace!
SHREE GANESH

Many years ago, a small girl came home,
Angry and furious - rebellion in her tone.
Why do we have gods that look so queer?
The elephant headed God - a symbol of cheer?
Isn’t that a deformity? Isn’t that bad?
Her mother only smiled with all the patience she had.
‘This is the Lord,’ she said in her ear,
‘Who represents blessings and good cheer!
‘From a Father so perfect, a Mother so divine
Is born this Baby with a nature so fine!
Where should I begin with His great story?
The elephant head you know, how about his glory?
‘The form of the Lord with the elephant head
Is no deformity, it shows wisdom instead.
Calm and composed, watchful and wise,
The head is the seat of those twinkling eyes.
‘Eyes that see, but with a widened view;
Ears that are broad for a reason too.
All that is heard may not be for you,
Winnow out the evil, heed what is true.
‘Then the trunk, emerging from the head,
Long and curved, on His stomach its bed.
Be the heaviest of heavies, or the tiniest grain,
The trunk knows to exert the exact strain!
‘Here is a form with virtue installed.
Albeit exaggerated, don’t be appalled.
Open your eyes to the ideals ingrained,
In this idol that you shun in shame.’
The mother looked down at her girl, and saw
No more anger - but a rare look of awe.
Thank you, Mother - you revealed the essence
Of the form that we worship - I bow in obeisance!
To the Lord who pervades, crafts our success,
To the Lord who clears hurdles that depress,
To this our Lord, the son of Mahesh,
To this All loving, our dear Lord Ganesh!
PARADISE ON EARTH
As day broke out on the eastern skies
That early summer dawn -
I was beckoned by His silent cries
To walk with Him that morn.
I hastened out of my shelter then:
Who would let this chance go by -
To walk with Him, who has made all men
And rivers and trees and the sun on high?
He led me to a shady glen
Even as the sky changed its hue -
Midnight darkness of specks a-million
Now blushing into this powdery blue.
The music here, oh, so divine!
The chirrup of birds, the leaves that shook;
With the breath of wind that touched the vine
The melodious chanting of the youthful brook.
Where were words to praise this mosaic
Of tens and thousands of shades of green?
Man-made art did seem prosaic
When compared to this heavenly scene!
I sat at the foot of a fine old tree
In the niche of an ageing trunk
And through the leafy branches did see
The enchanting beauty of the rising sun!
One master stroke, as if in jest,
Set the brook dancing in glee
Every ripple wore a golden crest
As it flowed to the lap of eternity.
And in that play of gold and blue
The peace that I felt surround me,
Was far more reverend than all I knew.
Was this what man called Liberty?
As I went floating from tree to tree,
Purging myself in that dewy shower,
I thanked the Lord that He placed me
In His arms, in that tranquil bower!
THE FIRST SPRING LILY
I tried in vain to rise up
From mundane thoughts of loss,
Anger and pain did fill my cup,
Little things would make me cross.
