Introduction
Like most angst-filled teenagers, I wrote terrible poetry. It was a way of releasing all the pent up emotions and petty vindictive expressions I was unable to voice in real life. Naturally enough, they were all terrible, and thus in due time were consigned to the depths of my waste paper bin.
Many, many, many, many (plus a few) years later, I found myself out of work, out of home, out of love and generally out of life. I was at my lowest ebb and the road to recovery involved a lot of shaky literal steps and a lot of metaphorical soul searching. I started a blog as a catharsis for my woes:stevestillstanding.com. I still blog every day, it remains part of my therapeutic head space.
A few months after I started the blog, I woke up at 4:00am in the morning (as you do) with my head full of random thoughts (as you do). I wrote my first poem in many, many, many years, and enjoyed the experience of bringing it to ambient life so much that I continued to write them. So many, in fact, that my blog became less about black dog daze and more about actual poetry.
Over time more people read my work and enjoyed it. Readers seemed to be connecting with the dense and coruscating weave of my thoughts, my dark conciliatory needs and wants made real via keyboard and transmitted magically to the vast and unfathomable interwebs.
So, I’ve decided to publish some of my poetry. Hopefully you will find something here you connect with that makes you feel as miserable as I do most of the time.
But more so, hopefully you’ll find something you’ll enjoy.

to the light.
(This is the first poem I wrote, at 4:00am in the morning, back in early March 2017. I liked it so much I wrote another. And another. And…)
Reborn
consumed alive.
Prod me back to life.
her promise yields
engulfs my being,
Womb of sheets
warming rays—
Reborn.
Silken lover,
bright fingers on my face.
Cellphone silence,
binary muse.
Darkness, then
