Description

Gloria Barr Ford is her mother’s 7th child among 4 living sisters and brothers. She started writing poetry at the age of 8, and believes that she has always been “Empowered by the Spirit”. She accepted Christ at an early age, even though she’s had to learn many lessons the hard way, she finally returned to “the rock of her salvation”. An ordained itinerant elder and licensed evangelist, she’s quick to let you know she loves the Lord. She’s a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, playwright, storyteller, gospel singer, journalist, dramatist, radio minister and an administrative assistant at Coastal Carolina University. She has always wanted to write a book of poetry and a line of children’s books, so her dream is coming true. Hopefully as you read the poems of childhood, of family, of inspiration, and of life—you will become “Empowered By The Spirit”.

EMPOWERED BY THE SPIRIT

Empowered by the Spirit
Is how we ought to be
Letting the Spirit lead us
Letting the Spirit set us free
Some days are filled with sorrows
Some days are filled with woes
We can’t measure our tomorrows
We can’t conquer all our foes
Sometimes we try to pray
And the heavens seem like brass
The enemy won’t go away
And we’re bothered by the past
The children seem to take on airs
Like some beastly turn about
And we begin to pull out hairs
Then to scream and shout
The husbands can’t seem to understand
And most likely the wives will say
Isn’t that just like a man
To let the enemy take the land and run away?
With our friends and our neighbors and families too
Sometimes it makes you wonder
What in the world to do
So many problems come your way
But you’re empowered
So here’s what you say . . .
God is great and God is good
By God I’m always understood
I take my stand upon God’s Word
By His power I’m seen and heard
I bind and kick the Devil out
I usher the Holy Spirit in
The Devil does a turn about
And with God’s help I win
I feel big and tall and strong
I feel the pull of mighty merit
I realize as I go along
I am empowered by the Spirit!

TURN TO JESUS

There are friends who will leave you
When you need them most
They will turn their backs on you
And about it brag and boast

There are your children
Who will hurt you
Cause you pain and deep despair
And even though you’d die for them
They’ll tell you they don’t care

There are some spouses
Who will deceive you sore
Give you a broken heart
And walk on out the door

Co-workers can be so cruel
And even heartless too
To get a rapport with the boss
They’ll set a trap or two for you

Church members can be vile
A devilish working crew
If you ever cramp that member’s style
He’ll surely turn on you

Who can you go to
To whom can you cling
My friend just turn to Jesus
He is your everything

Let Him have your sorrow. He handle your today and secure your tomorrow

MY SECRET CORNER

I have a secret corner
Where I go to pray
It is where I talk to Jesus
All times night and day

I like to get real quiet
And pretend He holds me near
He wraps His arms around me
He’s blessed that I am there

He covers me with his feathers
And under His shadow I abide
He whispers that He loves me
Sometimes I have to cry

I tell Him about my troubles
He listens to my woes
He says my joys will be doubles
He says He will open doors

He says He will give me peace
That no one can understand
If I will just humble myself
And hold on to His hand

Yes in my secret corner
It’s just Jesus and just me
It’s the only time being a loner
Gives me such company

Whenever I leave the secret place
I am better for it still
To leave His calm and sweet embrace
Means blessed to do His will.

You should have a secret corner
Where you can go to pray
Some place to talk to Jesus
All times night and day

THE HEART SINGS FIRST

In this world of pressure and pain
Sometimes it seems as if all is vain
Sometimes we wonder what a curse
Then we remember the heart sings first

The heart sings a song of mirth or woe
A song of wondering which way to go
We have a choice and a right to choose
Whether or not we win or lose

The heart sings words that the ears can hear
It sings of groanings and peace and fear
It sings of betrayal despair and defeat
It sings of judgment and skips not a beat

It sings of loyalty at no cost
It sings of grief when all seems lost
It sings of midnight in a prison cell
It sings of mercy when all is well

The heart sings of children at their play
Even though the night has stolen their day
They harbor in shame the hurt within
But all their life they bare a grin

These make great comics and make you laugh
It’s just a cover to hide their wrath
If you could only see the heart within
You’d ask forgiveness for every sin

The heart has promised marriage vows
To be the best that God allows
It never imagined the blows and pain
