Foreword

Thisforeword introduces the Sorghum Trilogy part 3 titled “Love and the Wheels ofRedemption.” To fully appreciate the complete series, one should read all fiveparts of the series and read them in order 1 through 5. Chapter one of part 3 presentsa transition from the ending of part 2 to the start of part 3.
CHAPTER 1.

T oward the end of Sorghum Series Part 2, Rudyentered Miss Telia Simpson’s senior English class uninvited and proposed to oneof her students. It was Kara Dowd, captain of the cheerleading team anddaughter of Sorghum High Principal Horace Dowd. Telia and her students wereequally surprised and fascinated. Soon a chorus of student voices was shoutingSay Yes! Say Yes!

Telia
Please class; let’s hear how Kara answers him.

The room went suddenly silent. The need to hearher answer was more powerful than the need to act out.

Kara
I will be your wife. I am not a girl. I am awoman. I could have had children when I was twelve. I will bear your childrenand love you until I die.

The room was totally silent for five seconds aseveryone present digested what they had witnessed then a thunderous standingovation followed. Kara sat down at her desk and waited serenely for whateverwould unfold. When the ovation’s intensity was fading, Rudy walked towardTelia’s desk then beckoned her toward him. When she arrived they smiled ateach other and hugged in honor of their shared happy experience.
CHAPTER 2.

R udy walked to beside Kara standing next to herdesk, shared close eye contact and smiles then slowly pulled her close to him sotheir lips could meet in a soft and prolonged kiss, much to the delight ofeveryone present. Then Rudy turned to face Telia to share proud smiles withher.

Rudy
Do you know of a justice of the peace outside ofSorghum?

Telia
Rudy, I’d like to talk to you and Kara out inthe hall. Is that OK?

Rudy
Yes of course.

Telia
Class, I’d like you to talk to each otherquietly while I talk to Kara and Mister Tripp in the hall. Your homework assignmentis to use your textbook to prepare for a discussion tomorrow on the meaning ofthe words predicate nominative. If I’m still in the hall when the next bellrings, please leave quietly without horseplay.

Telia grabbed a pen and notepad from her desk. Karawalked into the hall first followed by Rudy then Telia.

Telia
I need to know what I can and cannot tell othersabout your plans. There is no way to stop the students in my class from describingwhat they witnessed to anyone they encounter. I feel responsible for tellingmy principal what happened before he is barraged by versions that might notagree with each other. This obviously is a sensitive issue since my principalis Kara’s father.

Rudy
Telia, I think you should go directly toPrincipal Dowd’s office as soon as possible, describe that you witnessed aproposal with acceptance and that Kara and Rudy both talked about his timescale leading to marriage. You should avoid stating that we are following histime scale. With Kara’s permission, I want to get married as soon aspossible. Her father has a crush on Kara and is starting to act as if he’sKara’s husband.

Telia
Wow! I don’t blame you. Kara, are you ready tobe married?

Kara
Yes.

Telia
You need to start by getting a marriage licenseat the Cornton County Court House then respect a five day waiting period beforeproceeding. You should go now to save time, get your birth certificates, makesure you have driver’s licenses, stop at the Roller Girl Drive-In, buy a coupleof sandwiches and drinks to make up for missing lunch, then go on to the CountyCourt House. You need to be eighteen. I know Rudy is older than that, butKara, are you eighteen?

Kara
Yes, I turned eighteen in January.

Telia
Kara, we don’t want anyone to see you leave withRudy. Please return to your desk and pretend you’re studying your textbookuntil the class change bell rings. When it rings, go into the hall and downthe nearest flight of stairs with the normal flow of students then slip out ofa side entrance into the parking lot. Once you’re there, look for Rudy’s carand join him there. I will stay out in the hall with Rudy giving himdirections to the court house and explaining how to find a justice of thepeace, motel and restaurant in Natayo.

Telia watched Kara rejoin her class, gave Rudydirections for getting to the Cornton County Court House and reminded him thatboth members of a couple applying for a marriage license need to have theirdriver’s licenses and birth certificates with them to succeed. She added thaton March ninth, they would need the same three items plus a change of underwearand some personal stuff for staying overnight in Natayo. Telia fumbled withher pen and started writing and drawing on the notepad she brought out from herdesk.

Telia
Today is Wednesday March fourth. After you getyour marriage license today and your five day wait is over on March ninth, you shouldmake sure your marriage license, driver’s licenses, birth certificates, changesof underwear and personal stuff are loaded into your car then drive here, parkin the school parking lot while my class is in session and wait for Kara toappear. She will stay in my class until the class change bell rings, then willstart moving with the herd as before, then peel off and meet you at your car.Nobody will see you together inside the school.

Rudy
On March ninth, how do I find my way aroundNatayo?

Telia
I’m drawing a crude map of Natayo now. When I’mdone it will be yours. You go North on Natayo Road, turn right onto MainStreet, go East for a couple of blocks then look to your right and park nearAaben Drugs, go inside and meet Elmer Aaben. Tell him why you’re there andhe’ll do the rest. Trust him. He knows everything about Natayo.

Rudy realized he had been to Aaben Drugs beforeto buy rubbers and hoped Elmer was wise enough to pretend it didn’t happen.

Rudy
Telia, I don’t know how we’ll ever repay you forall the help you’re offering us.

Telia
I think a large gold medal would be appropriate.

Rudy
I’m smiling.

Telia
Seriously, you can repay me by becoming a lovingcouple for life. I love you both.

Rudy
We both love you too. I’m on my way to theparking lot.

As soon as Kara arrived at his car and sat downnext to him, she asked Rudy to get his birth certificate first while shethought about how to get hers if her mother tried to change their plans. Rudyagreed, drove to Mary’s place, parked and went inside, walked upstairs to hisroom unnoticed, pulled his birth certificate from a fireproof metal box underhis bed and returned to his car. He was relieved when he sat down behind thesteering wheel, but looked puzzled when he turned to face Kara.

Rudy
Kara, where’s your birth certificate?

Kara
It’s in a fireproof box under my bed at home.

Rudy
How can you get it without alarming your mother?

Kara
I have no choice. I have to get it. I’ll justgo inside and hope she’s out shopping, in a room far from mine or visiting afriend. If she’s there and sees me, I’ll try to distract her and sneak itout. I have no choice other than telling her what we’re doing.

Rudy
Wait! Something just hit me! If you get luckyand don’t need to tell your mother today, you should get everything you needfor today and for March ninth out now. You might not get lucky on your secondtry at getting stuff out.

Kara
You’re right!

Rudy
I can go for our license today without thechange of clothes or personal stuff because I can gather it together on theninth.

Rudy drove to the Dowd home and parked. Karawent inside, pulled her birth certificate out of the fireproof metal box underher bed, put together a collection of underwear and personal stuff and returnedto Rudy’s car smiling.
Rudy
Was she there?

Kara
Yes. She was in the basement so I tiptoed intomy bedroom, got my birth certificate and stuff for staying overnight thentiptoed out. I’m so relieved!

They drove off together headed for the CorntonCounty Court House and stopped on the way at the Roller Girl Drive-In to buysandwiches. Telia’s directions were perfect and getting their marriage licensewas routine. They left the courthouse building smiling, ate their sandwichesin the car then returned to Sorghum High. Kara entrusted the marriage license, her birth certificate and her overnight package to Rudy’s care, entered herschool’s building and joined into the flow of her remaining school day withoutincident. Rudy returned to his office in Cornton and continued helping todevelop Doctor Giesing’s film documenting the repeated use of homer referees inthe Farmland Conference.
While Kara was still in school on WednesdayMarch fourth, news of her acceptance of Rudy’s proposal spread quickly, largelythrough the efforts of classmate and cheerleading teammate Conn
