Matteo stopped to breathe in the warm salty air before descending the steps from the private jet that had brought him across the English Channel to Jersey. They had flown over the pale golden sand and rolling waves of St Ouen’s Bay just moments before and thanks to the cloudless blue sky his flight had been a smooth one. He had made this trip once before as a child, coming with his parents and brother for their summer holiday. Matteo had thought the place exciting and exotic then, and was surprised to find that he still felt the same excitement as his seven-year-old self had done.
Several minutes later he walked out of the private VIP terminal at Jersey Airport to be greeted by his best friend Alex. Matteo smiled at his friend and returned his wave. The pretty girl with the dark hair in a ponytail must be the local girl, Piper, who Alex had told him about during their most recent phone call. She was the first woman Matteo knew of who had completely captured Alex’s heart. He noticed her tee shirt and black shorts and, suspecting she was as unimpressed as Alex by expensive fashion, instantly understood why the two of them were attracted to each other. Despite Alex’s success, he had never changed and was still the chilled and friendly guy Matteo had always known. It was part of the reason why he had trusted him to find the perfect location for his next music video.
‘You’re here,’ Alex shouted, reaching him and giving Matteo a brief hug and a pat on his back.
‘I certainly am.’ Matteo smiled, taking a long slow breath in and feeling his shoulders relax for the first time in weeks. ‘I feel like I’m on holiday already.’ He smiled at the girl standing quietly next to Alex. If he wasn’t mistaken she seemed a little nervous. He was used to people not knowing what to expect from him and liked to think that he soon put everyone at their ease. Being a popstar was an odd life even for him. He had had several years to get used to the adulation, but it still seemed unwarranted. ‘And I guess you must be Piper. I’ve heard a lot about you.’
‘I am,’ Piper said, reaching out her hand to shake his. ‘I have to admit I’ve heard a little about you from Alex, but obviously I’ve read a lot about you in the media and listened to your music whenever it comes on the radio.’
He liked her and was relieved to note she wasn’t a fan. Matteo knew from experience that it would make things easier for the three of them. Not that Alex had introduced him to a girlfriend for several years now. He presumed his friend spent most of his time working on his apps and, Matteo mused, more recently spending time on the island his grandfather seemed to have made his second home.
‘You’re looking very well, Alex,’ he said, happy to see the obvious change in his best friend. ‘More relaxed.’ He turned to Piper. ‘I imagine it must feel like being on a permanent holiday living here.’
Piper thought for a moment. ‘I suppose it does in the summer months.’ She glanced at Alex. ‘Would you like to go straight to the location Alex has found for your video? It’s not too far from here.’
He liked that idea. ‘Good idea. I’ll be relieved to know that we have a location sorted out.’ He accompanied them to her Mini. ‘I’m sorry for the rush to find somewhere,’ he said. ‘But when my management team decided to make the most of how well my records were selling and added several more dates to my tour it cut down any available time we had to record this video for my Christmas release.’
‘It’s fine,’ Alex said, getting into the back seat of the car. ‘I’m sure you’ll be happy with the place we’ve found for you.’
Matteo relaxed in the car while Piper drove them down a hill with the most incredible view across the wide arc of the bay.
‘I love this view,’ she said as they went around the lower bend and Matteo was gifted with the most incredible view across St Ouen’s Bay.
Surfers rode the rolling waves and a small Martello tower sat on an islet in the sea. He could see the long stretch of golden sand between the pine trees as they drove along the road and sand dunes made a surprise appearance to the right. ‘I can see why you thought of this place,’ Matteo said, seeing a small plane coming over the bay and landing to the right of them on the hill. ‘Did I fly in over this beach earlier?’
‘That’s right,’ Piper said. ‘Sometimes the planes come in from over St Catherine’s on the east of the island where I live. This is the west.’ She pointed up to the right on top of the higher land where more majestic pines stood proudly shading the area. ‘That’s where we’re going and where we suggest you record your video.’
Matteo liked what he had seen so far and was excited to reach the place.
Piper and Alex stood quietly to the side as Matteo took in the huge pine trees surrounding the partially enclosed grassland standing high above St Ouen’s Bay. The scent from the pine trees, as their branches swayed gently in the breeze, gave a calming atmosphere to the area and when Matteo spotted the view between the trees down to the beach and out across the rolling waves he stared in silence. It was beautiful here, he decided, imagining it to be the perfect place to build a secluded home with one of the most awe-inspiring views he had ever seen.
‘Well? What do you think?’ Alex eventually asked, taking hold of Piper’s hand. Matteo could see his friend was anxious to have pleased him and smiled.
‘It’s incredible. I love it.’
Alex’s shoulders lowered and he exhaled sharply. ‘That’s a relief. When Jax suggested this place I wasn’t sure if it would be right for what you wanted, but I agree that it’s pretty spectacular.’
Piper turned to him, smiling. ‘It’s on private land too so the production shouldn’t have any disturbances apart from the occasional plane taking off or landing over there. Even then, if the wind was in the right direction it wouldn’t be a problem.’
‘You’ve done very well.’ Matteo was grateful to the pair for coming up with such a beautiful setting. ‘I’m very thankful to you both and to—Sorry, who did you say suggested this place?’
‘Jax,’ Piper said. ‘He’s my cousin.’
‘Now all we have to do is hope the weather stays this fine,’ Piper said thoughtfully, looking a second later as if she had wished she’d kept her thoughts to herself. ‘I’m sure it will do though. It is summer after all.’
‘Bad weather?’ The thought concerned Matteo. He didn’t want to have to make alternative plans. ‘Surely it’s going to be fine at this time of year.’
‘It should be,’ she said, ‘but it’s not something we can rely on. The island is nestled in the Bay of St Malo, off the French coast, and it’s drenched in sunshine for most of the year, but it’s still open enough to suffer bad storms either coming up from Paris or down from the English mainland,’ Piper explained. ‘There aren’t any storms forecast though,’ she added before he had time to fret. ‘So that’s good. Probably our worst outcome would be to have fog descend over the island.’
‘Fog?’
‘Yes, or sea mist. It can settle for several days when it does come in.’ She cringed and looked away.
Matteo didn’t want to leave anything to chance. He had more than enough to deal with as it was with the filming and preparations for the tour. He saw Alex take his phone from his jeans pocket and begin searching for something.
‘What are you looking for?’ Piper asked.
‘Checking the five-day forecast.’ His friend frowned as he scrolled thoughtfully.
‘Bad news?’ Matteo asked, his mood dipping as he recognised his friend’s worried reaction.
Alex shaded his phone from the sun with his hand and squinted at the screen. ‘Hopefully not.’ He held up his phone for them to see for themselves. ‘It says here that there’s a storm forecast to come up from Brittany in two or three days.’
‘It might pass us by though,’ Piper said, hope obvious in her voice.
‘Let’s hope it does,’ Matteo said anxiously as he looked up through the pine needles to the cloudless azure sky.
‘Shall we go and find somewhere to buy a cool drink?’ Piper suggested. ‘I’m parched.’
Matteo assumed she was trying to distract him and was happy for her to do so. He was tired, having set his alarm to wake him at five that morning for his driver to take him to the airport.
‘He’s not at all like the press make him out to be, is he?’ Alex gave Matteo a wink, tipping him off that he was joining Piper in distracting him while they tried to think of a Plan B. ‘In fact, growing up he was the shyer one out of the two of us. Isn’t that right, mate?’
Matteo nodded. ‘Hard to believe now, I imagine.’
‘It is.’ Piper stared at him as if trying to imagine him being that way.
‘I still can’t believe he’s seen as this cocky, confident superstar,’ Alex laughed, slapping Matteo on his back.
Matteo pulled Alex to him, an arm loosely around his friend’s neck. ‘Are you saying I pretend to be cocky?’ He saw the surprise on Piper’s face.
Alex laughed. ‘No, I’m saying you pretend to be confident.’
Matteo knew Alex wasn’t being mean, it was the banter they had with each other. He smiled at Piper. ‘It’s true. People automatically see the two of us and presume I’m the confident one and Alex is the shy, retiring type.’
Piper listened to him thoughtfully before glancing at Alex. ‘I have to admit to thinking the same thing. Although…’ She looked unsure wh
