Description

Young policewoman Kathryn Jameson is on holiday in the United States when she finds herself stranded in Farnham, a near abandoned "ghost town" where the one and only primary school teacher has just been brutally murdered. Kathryn soon makes the acquaintance of Mena Birch, a sexy, flirtatious young lesbian who is not exactly backwards about coming forwards and who makes her attraction to and interest in Kathryn only too clear. Dragged into the murder investigation, Kathryn soon realises all the clues point to Brian Lennane, one of the pupils of the murdered teacher... but could an eight year old really do that to a grown man?As Kathryn and Mena's relationship grows closer and the case gets even stranger, Kathryn will find her beliefs, her sexuality and her life on the line... because in this town the boogieman is more than just a story and there is a very good reason to be frightened of what's under the bed...

Whisper in Your Ear

CHAPTER ONE
Little Brian Lennane was sitting with a scowl on his face.
Then again, Principal Donald Adams reflected wryly as he looked over the seven pupils in his primary school, little Brian Lennane always had a scowl on his face. He didn’t think he’d ever seen him without one. He was quite the most troublesome child Adams had come across in his twenty-odd year teaching career. If the boy was as troubled on the inside as he was on the out, Adams figured he’d have an ulcer before he reached the age of nine.
Adams strode over to him. The children were all reading quietly - quite Adams’ favourite part of the day - but Brian was just sitting there scowling. It made his overweight, pig-like face even more unpleasant to gaze upon.
Adams reached him and knelt down by his desk. “Problem, Brian?” he inquired.
Brian jumped as if disturbed from a trance. “What?” he snapped, rather rudely, Adams thought.
“I asked if there was a problem,” Adams informed him. “You didn’t appear to be enjoying your book terribly much. Actually, it looked like your mind was somewhere else entirely, and somewhere not terribly pleasant if the expression on your face was anything to judge by.”
“Was there a question in there somewhere?” Brian asked snidely.
Adams had to resist the urge to reach out and slap the little swine. He really was appallingly obnoxious. “Is something wrong?”
“I was thinking about the test,” Brian informed him.
Adams sighed. “I knew it,” he shook his head. “Brian, the test was two days ago now. You failed. So what? It wasn’t all that important.”
“I shouldn’t have failed,” Brian said sullenly. “I never fail.”
“Well, there’s a first time for everything,” Adams answered.
“I never fail,” Brian repeated sullenly. He suddenly turned and looked at Adams with an expression of pure spite. “I think you failed me on purpose.”
“Really!” Adams was offended. “Why on Earth would you think anything like that?”
“Because you don’t like me,” Brian snarled. “Because you’re mean and nasty, and you think you can get away with anything just because you’re a grown-up!”
“That’s enough!” Adams shouted. The other children were looking at them now, with a mixture of shock, curiosity and just a dash of malicious delight.
“I hate you!” Brian spat at him. “You’re a stupid, nasty, mean little motherfucker!”
“ That is enough !” Adams roared, standing up and towering over the boy. “Go! Get out! I’m sending you home! Let’s see what your grandparents have to say about your appalling behaviour!”
Brian got up from his seat and walked calmly to the door. He turned and looked back at Adams with an icily venomous stare. “Grown-ups always think they can get away with anything,” Brian said viciously. “But you’re not going to get away with this.” He stormed out.
Adams was aware of the class watching him and made a huge effort to calm himself down. He was literally shaking with anger.
What in God’s name was wrong with that boy?
“Goddamn fucking shit!”
Those decidedly un-ladylike words were sprouting from the mouth of someone who looked far too sweet to be using such profanities. But Kathryn Jameson, the twenty two year old policewoman currently on extended sabbatical, was not feeling in a very ladylike mood as she stood in the rain on the side of the road beside her rental car. The tire had blown, causing her to almost crash the car, she’d spent fifteen minutes getting soaked to the bones jacking the thing up only to then discover the ‘spare tire’ provided by the rental company in the boot was, in fact, flat as a pancake to begin with.
“Goddamn fucking shit!” Kathryn repeated the vulgarities with extra emphasis. It didn’t exactly improve the situation she was in any, but it made her feel better. Well, a bit anyway. For a second or so. The pretty, petite brunette contemplated her options and was just about to use her cell phone to call for assistance when a car appeared to slow down near her. “A knight in shining armour,” Kathryn thought. “Thank Christ.” She moved a bit closer to the road, when the car started up again, teenage boys laughing and hooting as a huge puddle of water the car crashed through went flying onto Kathryn.
Drenched, Kathryn tripped and fell onto the road, her wrist falling at an awkward angle beneath her. Kathryn yelled in pain. She rolled over, examining her wrist gently. It hurt. It hurt like hell, actually. Kathryn prayed to God it wasn’t broken. Kathryn hauled herself to her feet and got back in the car to avoid the rain, somewhere safe and dry she could call for help.
That was when she noticed it. The jangle inside her pocket. The pocket where her mobile phone was. Gingerly, Kathryn reached into her jacket and retrieved the phone.
It was shattered. Broken.
Buggered.
No calling for assistance now.
Kathryn stared at it in disbelief for a few seconds, before finally exploding in frustrated anger. “Goddamn fucking shit !”
Donald Adams finished his marking and checked his watch. With disbelief, he saw it was nearly seven o’clock. “Christ,” he muttered. “It’s hardly worth going home now. I might as well sleep here, I’ll be bloody well coming back in a minute.” Nevertheless, Adams got up from his chair and began struggling to get into his coat.
The classroom door banged.
Adams nearly jumped out of his skin, but there was nobody there. There couldn’t be, though, could there? What kind of idiot would still be at school at this hour?
Adams made for the door, turning off the light as he reached it.
There was a loud thwack behind him in the room.
Adams switched the light back on instantly, jumping around. There was no one in the room. Well, of course not, how could there be, he’d have seen them. But then what had made that noise? Adams stared for a moment, but the completely empty room with no possible hiding places whatsoever quickly made him feel rather ridiculous. Adams wondered what his family - wherever they were - would think of him letting his imagination run away with him - most of them had seemed to think he had no imagination.
Chuckling, Adams turned back to the door and turned off the light.
Instantly, something grabbed him from behind. Adams fought, but whoever it was was powerful, almost unbelievably strong. Adams was about to scream for help when his attacker reached around him with his hands.
Fingernails like razorblades slit his throat from ear to ear.

CHAPTER TWO
The sky was almost completely dark as Kathryn approached the road sign:
FARNHAM: 10 KM.
She was on foot. It had at least stopped raining, but she was tired, wet through, cold to the bone and her wrist hurt like hell. Some holiday she was having. She’d told her friends and family she wanted to “see the world”, have some space to “find herself”.
See the world my arse, Kathryn thought to herself. Over a month and I haven’t even got out of the US yet. And not New York or glamour of glamours, Los Angeles, but... Farnham? Where the hell was that supposed to be?
A car began to slow down beside her.
Kathryn tensed. If it was some sleazeball, or some goons who wanted to drench her again, she’d take out her gun and shoot the bastards. A gun, on holiday. But John had insisted she take it. The car pulled up beside her, and a window wound down.
Kathryn found herself looking at an exceptionally beautiful young woman, with long, lustrous locks of brown hair, piercing brown eyes and luscious red lips, around twenty one years of age.
“Need a ride?” the girl asked in an American - well, duh - accent.
“Oh, yes. Please God yes!” Kathryn climbed in.
“Where you headed?” the girl asked.
Kathryn couldn’t help but notice the girl was wearing an impossibly short skirt showing off fine legs, and a figure-hugging blouse that accentuated her - very supple-looking - breasts. “Anywhere I can use a phone and take a shower,” she replied.
“Amen to that.” The girl reached out a hand, her piercing eyes looking Kathryn up and down. “Mena Birch.”
Was it Kathryn’s imagination or had Mena’s inspection of her with her eyes definitely lingered a little on her breasts? Nonetheless, she took Mena’s hand and shook it. “Kathryn Jameson,” she replied.
“Good to meet you, Kathryn,” Mena smiled.
“You too,” Kathryn returned the smile.
