“VOWS” is a love letter … and a love story of two people who allowed their hearts and minds to dare to formulate a blueprint for their lives in marriage, then to apply those shared principles to the life, they will share. “Vows” embraces the predictable victories and challenges of relationship and marriage. The story sings a reminder that words matter, especially the vows of marriage.
“Vows” resumes the love saga of Denise and Kyle poignantly scribed in the novel, “Whisper of a Kiss.” For this reason, references from “Whisper” are tastefully inserted to provide the necessary context to the texture of this novel.
Those who fell in love with the unforgettable pair in “Whisper” will love them even more in this book. For those who are discovering Denise and Kyle for the first time, prepare your heart to be caressed by intensity and delight. Their dramatic reconnection from “Whisper …” is reenacted in an early chapter of this novel, so every vestige of their remarkable love is laid open for you.
When two people, distinct and original in their own ways, arrive at a singular moment in their relationship, deciding to enter into marriage, they do so with an anticipatory blend of romantic passion and their individual visions as to how their lives together might exceed the existence each has known in singularity.
To be sure every two persons who wish to become one in matrimony seek the nebulous acuity known as “happiness.” Time-honored language refers to this as connubial felicity (happy marriage). However, often absent in the carousel of pre-marital bliss is the consideration through subsequent discourse that the circumstances of their impending marriage will not always be smooth and free of challenge. Although uncomfortable to discuss and more comfortable to avoid, these are the “what-if conversations” regarding finances, children, health, professional/work issues, and the requisite melodic topic, “to always feel as we do tonight.”
With so much emotion and the rapid-fire of activity when two persons fall in love, there is a rush to experience every feeling, and be together always. However, in that frenzy, some vital elements are placed on a metaphoric second shelf of importance.
In the run-up to marriage day, there usually is more time and attention paid to the wedding ceremony than to the fiber and substance of a couple’s need to carefully consider and openly discuss promises, pledges, and obligations as a foundation for all that will happen in the future.
“Vows” is a story of Denise and Kyle who, like many couples, are wrapped up in the progressive flames of love, ascending from infatuation to deep affection and on the threshold of taking an oath of holy matrimony. The novel peers into the looking glass of their budding relationship and those wonderful planning moments for their wedding… the ceremony … the honeymoon … and their years of marriage.
Most critically, “Vows” addresses the writing, the very design, of their marriage vows that would direct their loving path in all that they may encounter in the years ahead.
Unlike the perceptions of many persons, the preparation of marriage vows should not be a personal saga of two people, choosing to be married or a series of wishes for the future. Vows are the principles that two-loving people under God agree to uphold, no matter the challenges faced, the victories to be celebrated, and almost everything in between.
The book is a testament to love and a contemplative design for a flourishing marriage. The devotion of Denise and Kyle manifests in their courage, friendship, and the incredible sustained intimacy that never fails them.
For those readers who have not read “Whisper of a Kiss,” the first chapter of this novel will provide you with a summary of the dramatic events that led to the engagement of Denise and Kyle. For those who may have read “Whisper of a Kiss,” you will be treated to a little walk down memory lane as a bit of a soul-warming for this book.
Chapter 1 Whisper Before We Kiss
\In their high school years, they had become friends by the rarest of circumstances. Denise was a magnificent young lady, possessing incomparable beauty with uncommon intellect. An only child of affluent means, she carried herself with grace, and so overwhelmingly attractive that to most boys in school, Denise appeared almost unapproachable.
Always surrounded by streams of friends and admirers, Denise was palpably popular, but in her self-protective heart, she felt the loneliness of the day. In her cloistered heart, she developed compassion for others.
In contrast Kyle, was an only child of a loving single parent who had never married. Shy, sometimes fearful, he was considered one of the many marginalized students who walk every high school in America. Intensely observant, there was no one whom he considered a “friend” or a buddy during his high school years … that is … until he first saw, and came to know Denise.
Kyle felt that Denise was far above his station in school and his life. From the first moment he saw her, Kyle was awed by her. Although sharing only a single chance conversation, Kyle was smitten with Denise, always seeking the very sight of her. His eyes drank heartily from the few opportunities to see her. Kyle studied her walk, and from the echoes of the school’s hallways, strained to hear her voice while following in her wake as Denise passed before him.
Denise witnessed how Kyle was sometimes ill-treated by other students. In an act of empathy from a concerned Denise who wished to render an apology after her boyfriend had callously spoken to Kyle, she placed a cellphone call to Kyle at his home. That single phone call sparked a friendship that led to hundreds of evening hours of conversation on endless topics. Kyle listened each night endlessly to Denise in thankful reverence, initially just responding with one or two-word replies.
Near the end of Denise’s senior year in high school, she came to depend on Kyle as her friend and confidant. Finding it difficult to understand his feelings regarding Denise, and with the loving counsel of his mother, Kyle finally recognized that Denise was …THE ONE in his life. As it turned out, Denise would forever be THE ONE for Kyle.
Kyle’s heart overflowing with adoration for Denise, yet unable to express such feeling, finally discovered a way to tell Denise how much he loved her, in a poem, “An Ode to Denise,” that he had written and recited to her on one memorable rainy day before Christmas. So poignant was this momentous occasion that rainy days would never be the same again for either of them.
After Denise’s graduation from high school, she all but disappeared from Kyle’s life with only his daily thoughts of her to fuel his heart. This began a 12-year search for her as no one seemed to know where she was or how to reach her. Her family had moved out of town, and Denise had planned to enroll in college, but again, where was a mystery.
Even in her absence, Denise’s influence on Kyle’s life was profound and never wavered. For most of his public school years, Kyle had been an underachiever, but as Denise gradually became a part of his life, just her sheer presence in his heart instilled in him a previously unrealized motivation and level of self-confidence.
There was nothing specific that Denise ever said or did that addressed his schoolwork or activities, but the resulting impact of Denise on Kyle was unmistakable. Dramatically, Kyle’s educational performance rose from mediocrity to one of high academic achievement with many awards along the way. With all of the positive things occurring in his life, he s
