Chapter 1
The advertisement had described it as a cottage but it was little more than a shack, really. Still, Annabeth reflected, there wasn’t all that much available here at short notice and she was lucky to get it at all. And it had got her out of London and as far way from Alex and his Lolita Lady as one day’s drive could take her.
Of course, she wasn’t mourning the loss of Alex, things had been more or less over between them for years. It was the humiliation that she couldn’t tolerate. And the fact that even all her so-called friends had know about the ludicrous affair with the office intern and had been laughing at her behind her back for months. Hell, if some kid with the ink still wet on her A-Levels wanted an old fart like Alex she was welcome to him. Annabeth just wished that he’d ended things – officially, that is – with her before he had embarked on his fervid exploration of the sexual organs of the kindergarten generation.
Anyway, that was her story and here she was in Trebartha Sands in a falling down old hut with a smoky stove and only a one-legged seagull for company. “You sure you want it for the whole summer?” Connie Bargus had said, the incredulity transparent in her voice. “No-one’s ever stayed at Trebarthen Cottage for a whole summer before. You sure you don’t want to stay a few days before you commit yourself?”
