Description

Train of Thought is a book of poetry that started life as a bit of fun as the author filled some spare time at work. Realizing his potential he took to writing poems on his train journey to work. As described in the opening poem "Train of Thought" he uses his forty five minute train journey into work to put down his thoughts into rhyming verse creating pleasing stories that are guaranteed to raise a smile. By his own admission some were more difficult to write as he analytically describes the changes he noted following his son's two tours in Afghanistan as a serving member of the 3rd Battalion the Parachute regiment. His poems explore his inner thoughts focusing on his work, family and pets. Others are descriptive renditions of scenes put into words while some are drawn from the deepest annals of his mind that take you on a wondrous journey of thought. All his work will at least make you think, smile, laugh and maybe draw a tear. The author is Mark Williams a forty seven year old Civil Engineer. Born in Liverpool in 1965 his childhood was a happy one tainted by the misery of his parent's broken marriage and frequent fighting. His attempt to capture this time in his poem "Scream" is possibly his most moving and compelling piece of work to date. This book is dedicated to Lewis Hendry, good friend and 3rd Battalion the Parachute regiment colleague of the author's son. Lewis was killed in action on a 2010/11 tour in Afghanistan two days before his 21st birthday.

Train of Thought
Born 12 th June 1965, to Catherine and Henry Williams, I am the youngest of seven. The children were all born within a ten year period with the eldest being born in 1955. There then followed four girls with my second brother being born in 1964. Me, Mark Williams was born a little over a year later.
We grew up in Speke, Liverpool L24 under the shadow of what was then called Speke airport, now known, following an extensive overhaul in the 1980’s, as Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Typically we where raised in a three bedroom council house which was a little cramped for a family of nine. Seven children back in those days however was nothing out of the ordinary, as I myself discovered early on having friends who came from a family of fifteen boys.
My earliest memories of school go back to my infant years where I attended Stockton Wood County Primary School for boys, a school incidentally Paul McCartney attended, himself being a resident of Speke, living on Western Avenue for a time. This of course was some fifteen to twenty years ahead of me, so I have no claims to have actually known him; however I was and remain to this day an avid fan of his work having grown up listening to his music. In fact my only tenuous link to this great musician is a vague memory of whilst attending Stockton Wood, I had some writings selected to be entered into the schools book of outstanding works and when given the opportunity to briefly look through the book I noted Paul McCartney himself also had an entry. I did say tenuous, although being he was fifteen to twenty years ahead of me the very fact that the same book was still being entered into shows just how difficult it must have been to gain entry into the book at all. Apart from the latter I have no claim to being a writer.
Moving on, I attended Hillfoot Hey Comprehensive a school that has since made way for a housing estate. It had been a High school two years prior to my joining and maintained its strict codes of conduct and high level of entry requirements. It was this school, concentrating on key skills in engineering learning that founded the rest of my life firstly as a Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic then later in life, and to this day, a Civil Engineer managing large construction sites. In between all of this I managed to squeeze in six years of soldiering joining the Royal Artillery in 1984 and leaving in 1990 a time that saw me marry my wife Andrea who gave birth to our only son, Oliver in 1988. Oliver is himself a soldier now as we boast he is a Paratrooper serving with 3 rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment.
My poetry, although written in a relatively short period of time, draws on all aspects from my life and these include work, love, pets and family. There are also some touching tributes to our young and brave taking my inspiration from my own memories of soldiering and that of my son’s experiences in Afghanistan.
The name of this book "Train of Thought" came about from where I write my poetry. Presently working on a large construction project in the heart of the City of London, I take a forty five minute train journey into work every morning. Time that I feel has to be filled to stop me becoming bored of the journey. So what better way than writing poetry? My earliest works started as a bit of fun writing about work colleagues and work itself, some of which I have entered into this book such as "Moorgate Shaft" and "City Tower Shuffle". Then the commissions came, where I was challenged by work colleagues to write about the most obscure subjects "Section Sixty One" and "Unknown Soldier" are examples of what they could think of at the time. This was soon followed by requests from my darling wife to write about family members and pets hence "Grandfather Paterson" and "More than a Dog" to name but two. I enjoyed writing "Sniper" and "A Dancers Show" where I challenged myself to paint a vision in words and incidentally if you read the latter ensure you read the rest of the story in "After the Dance". If asked which my favourite is, I find "Returning Heroes" a moving depiction, and a scene repeated far too many times, however I would have to say "Scream" is my one favourite as it captures my recollections of early memories growing up in Liverpool.
Whichever poem(s) you choose to read I hope you enjoy this collection and perhaps find your own favourite to stir up some forgotten memories whether good or sad.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Pte Lewis Dean Hendry of the 3 rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment killed in action, Afghanistan 2011, aged twenty years three hundred and sixty three days.

Train of Thought
Writing poems each day on the train Prevents each journey being the same My destination never does change Train of thought stops me going insane
Aim to become an accomplished poet To be published for all to know it My poems of brave and the bold In some you’ll find I bare my soul
Forty five minutes each way I get To scribble my words some I reject I find them all really enjoyable to do I hope they will all entertain you
Be prepared when you sit and read A box of handkerchiefs you will need They will make you laugh or make you cry The hankies are handy to dry your eyes
So please buy my poetry and make me happy Read them all I’m sure that they’re snappy Remember the profits are not made for me As some of the money goes to charity
Moorgate Shaft
Call into the Moorgate site There’s someone there both day and night At least a guard with a lonely plight To keep it safe, an intrepid knight
Positioned in the city centre The space provided is extremely tight Some might say it looks too small To build this new train ticket hall
The workers in their orange vests Are distinguished easily from all the rest The Bankers, shoppers and commuters too As they go about doing what they do
Environmentally, we will remain sound As we build this big hole in the ground Noise and dust, vibrations too Are measured daily, right on cue
On the site a crane stands so tall Making the other plant look quite small Positioned in the centre there, like Nelsons column at Trafalgar Square
Holding up the surrounding town Is concrete walls placed in the ground So before we build our concrete shaft We first must remove all of the past
Our main construction once complete Will be in the ground, below the street A magnificent grand engineering feat Of diaphragm walls with built in heat
The disciplines those that are required Our client will claim are inspired So the specialist who’ll do the graft Will help us deliver this enormous shaft
Building it will be no mean feat As we spill over onto the street The space required to deliver the goods And take away the rocks and the mud
Starting the works in 2011 In an office close to heaven 2014 we are due to complete This most extraordinary engineering feat
And the shaft itself upon completion Will be a railway guiding beacon A concrete wonder of some nine floors We pray the end user will applaud
City Tower Shuffle
Working with the boys to be A crazy bunch you’ll have to agree. Except of course for little old me, Who aims to please the community?
Stevie Lowder is our founder, Who has Alex Mowe leading the show? Dominic with his box of tricks, It is said to be the dominatrix.
There’s Derren and Chris on a planning blitz, Who keep thinking up amazing new tricks? Luke Porter like your mothers daughter, Is helping his team towards a sorter
Gary James who’s names renowned For all of his good work on the ground He’s here to supervise the shaft, Watching over his families graft
Bauer are the invited guest, Because we’ve heard they are the best. At pulling piles and building walls And grabbing us by the balls
So to young Tom our document controller, Who thinks of himself as a rock and rolle
