Dwight’s Proposal
Dwight lay’s in bed gazing at the walls, looking around, and thinking to himself about his past life. He has thoughts about how far he has come. He looks over at the clock as it reads 3 a.m. He then rolls to the other side and notices his girlfriend of two years lying next to him. Dwight admires her and feels proud of the woman he has chosen to be with.
She was beautiful, smart, and a hard worker. She had black silky hair that ran down to her back, caramel skin, a flat stomach, and muscular legs. I stared at her while she was sleeping and called her name in a low tone “Vanessa”. She awakes a little startled at first, but calms down when she sees nothing is wrong.
“Hey, what are you doing up so early in the morning,” she asked. “I was just thinking,” I gazed into Vanessa’s eyes.
“Thinking about what,” asked Vanessa. “I was thinking about us.”
Vanessa’s facial expression all of a sudden turns excited.
“Are you thinking about what I think you’re thinking about,” she asked.
I just smiled and said “Maybe.”
She smiles back with tears starting to swell in her eyes. I kissed her on the cheek and stuck my tongue in her ear. As I continued to swirl my tongue inside of her ear her eyes began to roll back. I kissed her breast, went down to her navel, and I started going lower tasting her in the place that would cause her to moan the most. As I went inside of her gently, I looked her right in the eyes and in a passionate voice I asked her…
“Do you love me?”
I began thrusting inside of her repeatedly. She could hardly get her words together, but she finally said yes. She repeated the word yes three times in a row. “Yes, yes, yes!” She was in love with me. I was well spoken and not such a bad looking guy myself. Oh and I almost forgot to mention that I’m also a successful partner at a law firm. Vanessa talked about us to anybody that would listen.
I was in love with Vanessa, but like most men I sometimes did not know how to express it. There were times she thought our relationship wouldn’t last because she had trust issues from a previous relationship. The last guy Vanessa dated cheated on her with his ex-girlfriend and got her pregnant.
I wasn’t the same man Vanessa was used to. I opened up to her more than I did with anyone else. She met my family and they loved her. Her family loved me as well. It was only right that we take the next step.
I didn’t want to move too fast, I wanted to make sure she was the one. I liked the fact that she didn’t have any kids because I didn’t have any children either.
To be with a woman that had no kids was a major plus in my book.
I had been through that once before and going through that again wasn’t being fair to myself, seeing that I didn’t have any kids. Dealing with two different baby daddies and two kids that weren’t mine took its toll on me. Vanessa was a school teacher and was going back to school for her Master’s Degree. At times I had second thoughts about our relationship due to her constant phone gossip with friends and family every day. I questioned whether or not I could deal with that for the rest of my life.
Often times she would get through having a conversation with one of her friends about our relationship and their boyfriends. Whatever mistakes her friend’s boyfriends may have made that day, she would ask me if I would do the same. I would constantly have to remind her that I was not the same guy her friends we’re dating. This was something that almost always led into an argument. For whatever reason, she never felt like we had arguments. She would say we’re just having a discussion. We had our differences, but I still loved her more than any other girl in my past.
We would talk to each other about everything, including our past relationships. I thought this was a good thing because this allowed me not to make the same mistakes the other guys did before me. This made it easy for me to let her know about the previous women before her, so that she didn’t do some of the same things that I didn’t like as well. She was the first female that I felt like I could talk to without watching what I said. She understood me more than anybody. She would always hint around that I was the one she could spend the rest of her life with.
Her father lived in another state and she would always tell me I was the first man she’d met that reminded her of him. All she wanted was what all women wanted and that was to be loved. I could tell she was starting to get the itch for the M word, better known as marriage. I knew sooner or later that I was going to have to make our relationship official. I just didn’t know when and if I was really ready for this big step in a relationship. All I knew is that I didn’t want to lose her.
I got up at 5 a.m. every morning to workout at the gym. While in the gym I would run across many beautiful women, but I would never look at them in a lustful way. At all cost I would avoid anything that would make me have doubt about the woman I had at home. Like most men I had cheated on all of my girlfriends.
I was a more mature guy. I didn’t want to cause another woman anymore hurt the way I did in my past. I would go to the gym, high five some of the guys, and start my workout every day like clockwork. The gym was very convenient seeing that it was attached to the same building that my firm was in. I would work out for an hour, hop in the shower, and began my workday. I was a no nonsense type of guy and wanted to make every minute of my day productive. Needless to say I was driven more than the average.
I knew that by me being the only black partner in the firm that I had to be perfect. Other white lawyers in the firm envied me. I had to be a no mistakes allowed type of guy. As I got settled in my office, Jim my senior colleague who mentored me to become a partner called me on my office phone to come to his office. This was nothing out of the ordinary seeing that Jim would call me to his office from time to time to go over new and pending cases.
As I reached the front door of Jim’s office I heard a second voice laughing. I could tell it wasn’t a male’s voice. As I walked in the door I saw Jim.
“Hey Dwight, just the man I wanted to see. Close the door behind you,” says Jim.
I noticed a fare skinned black woman sitting in the chair with her back toward me.
“This is our new intern Roslyn Phillips,” Jim says.
She turns around and I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. I reached out and shook her hand.
“You have soft hands for a man,” she said. Trying to keep my composure I simply replied… “Thank you.”
Jim just laughed and says, “Looks like you guys are off to a good start already. She will be helping you for the next few months on any projects that you have.”
“I am at your service. Anything you need,” she says.
I just looked at her and said…
“Well I have just the thing that I could use some assistance on.”
Jim’s office phone started ringing and as he answers it he put his hand over the phone and tells me and Roslyn he has to take the call. I was still surprised by the situation, but I looked at Jim with a state of confusion and just went with the flow.
“Come with me, I’ll show you where you‘ll be working,” I said. “Lead the way,” she replied with a hint of excitement.
As we were walking down the hallway she started asking me an abundance of questions.
“So how long have you been a partner with the firm?”
“I’ve been working for the firm for about seven years,” I glowed with confidence as I answered her.
“I can’t wait until I’m a partner,” she said “Put in the work and you’ll make it.”
“So where did you graduate from,” she quickly asked.
“My your kind of nosey on your first day. I graduated from Harvard if you must know. Where did you graduate from,” I quickly asked her the same question since she was grilling me.
“I graduated from the University Of Texas.” “I heard Austin is a beautiful city.”
“Yeah, but it’s not much for blacks to do though.” “How do you like living in L.A.,” I asked.
“It’s ok I guess. It was a real culture shock for me. Since I’m from the south, I’m use to friendlier people.”
“I’m from the south too,” I said. “Where are you from,” she asked.
“I’m from Atlanta. What part of the south are y
