Made to Mistress
Mary had been in service to the Raslo family all her life, her mother having also been in their employ. It had been a number of years since her own mother had passed on but Mary continued to remain loyal to the Raslo family through the ups and downs of family life. She had enjoyed a happy childhood growing up within the house and had now blossomed into a beautiful young woman.
In the last six months the feel of the house had shifted with the unexpected death of David Ralso, William his son had become introverted over that time and Mary found herself dealing with him when none of the other staff could.
Standing in his study she took a deep breath and watched him attempt to work whilst she waited to be dismissed.
“Will that be all Sir?”
She watched as he distractedly attempted to fill in some paperwork. Though Mary knew it was the same paperwork that had been on his desk for the past week and from the look of it he wasn’t really filling it in more just reading the same passage over and over again. Watching him she felt a pang of pity for the weight that had suddenly been placed upon his shoulders. He hadn’t been like the others who tended to make it obvious she was their servant, he had very often been found down in the kitchens, and always talked to the staff as if they were real people.
Since the only other young people in the house had been some of the kitchen staff, like Mary herself William had spent a large amount of time down in the kitchens playing games and hiding from his governess with them. As he had grown up a respectful distance had developed but he had always had a kind word to be said and was firm but fair making him very much liked amongst the staff. He was sometimes even guilty of playing the odd prank or two, and was never seen without a smile on his face.
Now however that was all gone. His father’s sudden death quite visibly weighed on his thoughts. In the months that had followed he had become thinner and drawn, never a smile on his face instead being replaced by a constant scowl. His quiet demeanour had vanished and now the majority of the staff did anything they could to stay out of his way.
When he didn’t reply Mary coughed a little trying to get his attention. His eyes flew from the page, face twisted in anger.
“What is it Perkins?” He snapped his face reddening as he stared at her with startling slate grey eyes.
“I was wondering if you needed anything else sir?” She kept her voice soft and calming though she looked at him directly. She wasn’t afraid of him, for all intents and purposes they had grown up together the only difference was that he had money and she didn’t.
“No, of course not, if I had wanted something I would have asked for it. Now get out!” he shouted vehemently at her but before she curtseyed she caught the look of something she didn’t recognise in his eyes and he blushed almost as if he was embarrassed. Brushing it off as simply nothing she bobbed and backed away.
“Yes of course Sir, I’ll be downstairs if you require anything else.”
Slipping out of the door before he had chance to reply she shut the door and leaned back on it closing her eyes briefly. Grief could do many things to a person but she had never imagined it would change someone as much as it had changed William. She wished there was something she could do but she hadn’t the faintest idea what if anything could be done.
“Sleeping on the job?” A voice to her left made her jump as did the hand that quickly ran up her thigh. Batting it away she looked at the speaker.
“No! I was just...composing myself, I wasn’t here long.”
The hand moved away and took hold of hers. All dismay about William briefly died down as she looked into the loving smile of Harold Roberts, the house butler and her partner of the last six months.
“I’ll believe you, but you have to be careful to not get caught by anyone else.”
“I was just...” she didn’t get any further as Harold shushed her.
“Come on you shouldn’t dawdle, I know you’ve a lot of work to do. I’ll deal with this little incident later for now you should get on with your work.”
Mary’s stomach knotted as Harold smiled at her his eyes filling with desire. Her eyes went wide and she bobbed her head.
“Of course sorry.”
Harold squeezed her hand showing her he wasn’t upset then nodded.
“Back to work then.”
She swallowed hard and turned around then fled down the corridor. It wasn’t that she was scared or upset, more that if she didn’t go quickly she knew she’d likely beg Harold for a quick bit of punishment there and then.
Relationships between staff weren’t frowned upon but it wasn’t something to be flaunted, and since the end of the Great War there was a lot more female staff than there had been before. The male staff who remained had like Harold their scars and stories that they never told. Harold had only joined the family fifteen years before and had been one of the first of the staff to be called up for duty. Mary hadn’t known him particularly well before he went but ever since he had come back they had spent more time together, neither of them talking about what had occurred to cause Harold scaring upon his back and arms. In the last few years Harold had been able to focus on the world and his job with an intensity that Mary greatly admired before admitting her feelings to him six months ago. Whilst they were working it fell to Harold as the head butler to give the orders and made sure that all the jobs were done to the high standard he required. If he had to admonish Mary they both knew it was nothing personal just work. When they were both off work however that was another matter. Then Harold still took control for the most part but in an extremely different way. But that would be later tonight for now she had jobs to do and she was already late for them, aware she was already behind schedule she began to run knowing full well the only people who would see her were staff.
William didn’t have any visitors or houseguests at present, she thought as she ran, he hadn’t had any since his father had died. In a way it made her life easier, there were no long hours making the house ready for quests or making sure they were all properly attended to. Yet in a strange way she missed all the hustle and bustle, the excitement that used to bubble up through the house prior to an event but most of all she missed seeing the ladies in all of their finery, the colours and the fabrics of their dresses so far removed from the clothes she was able to afford, and then there were the men all dressed to suit the activities yet always looking remarkably relaxed and at ease with themselves.
Mary had often leapt at any chance she could to be in middle of it them all - even if that meant doing extra jobs. It seemed to her that every little moment she was near or interacting with them or their things she was becoming at least in part one of them. She knew the notion was absurd however and had never mentioned it to anyone even Harold who had funny but effective little ways at getting at what was going on in her head, something Mary was sometimes unsure of herself.
She dashed into the kitchen and raced around getting her various bits and pieces together for the next job and then she was off again making sure to avoid the cook. Mary had been in service to the household her whole life but that didn’t mean she was at the top of the kitchen. The kitchen no matter how much others hated it was the cooks’ domain. If she wasn’t happy with something she let everyone know and would happily let everything grind to a halt until whatever was wrong got sorted.
Having avoided Cook, Mary set off for her tour of the house courtesy of cleaning all the mirrors, including the rather large full length one at the end of the dining room.
It was late in the evening when she had managed to get all her work done and was finally relieved of her duties. Although her work had taken her closer to William she hadn’t spoken to him again.
It was upsetting to think that they had been friends in childhood but as they grew older society demanded they not speak to one another in the same way and certainly not interact as they once did.
William had continued making regular visits down to the kitchens right up until the time his father had died. The cook had always told her his intentions were clear and directed at Mary although nothing had ever happened between them.
