Quote
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”

Chapter One
Wednesday September 14, 2011
As Alyx approached the front gate of the office, an overwhelming feeling came over her that Rafe Dalton was nearby. The feeling was so strong that she turned around expecting to see him when a Laramie County Deputy Sheriff’s truck drove by. That was not unusual in the least. A lot of the deputies lived in the area and sometimes they would stop in the office to check on things. But this time, an overwhelming feeling came over her as the truck turned at the next corner down Main Street.
Rafe Dalton. Oh my God. Is he back in town? Does he work for them again? The feeling so consumed her that she could not accomplish much during the day. She was too busy searching the Internet for any information she could find on him. There was really nothing concrete to go on. She did find a couple of phone numbers that she tried, but they were disconnected. There was no local news about him. The feeling stayed with her for the rest of the week. The last she knew, his wife had become ill and he moved to Tennessee. She used to know what town, but that name eluded her now. After all, it has been close to 18 years. It was 1993 when she left Jennings and moved to Horseshoe Creek after purchasing a small ranch just outside of town.
Saturday September 17, 2011
Alyx was a nervous wreck the rest of the week. She jumped every time the phone rang at the office or someone came in the door. Totally expecting to see Rafe or hear him on the phone. The feeling of him was so consuming that she could do nothing but think of him. She searched her house for her notes on where he had moved to but could not find them. She must have discarded them some time ago, she thought - cleansing the soul. Why are these feelings here now? Is he here? Is he coming to my house? If he found me at the office, he certainly could find my home address . This is not a large town. Her mind would not stop.
Then there was a knock at the door. The hair on her arms stood on end. She hardly ever got any visitors being this far out. She sneaked around the house trying to get a glimpse of who was at the door; she was scared, but excited at the same time. It turned out to be a neighbor needing a phone. She was relieved, but disappointed too. Of all days for someone to come to the door . She decided that he wouldn’t show up until his shift was over if that was him in the deputy’s truck. Then she decided he probably isn’t working but retired. He has to be in his 60’s by now.
Funny how we remember people the way we last saw them and forget to add the years. If he is retired, that would give him the opportunity to come by anytime. Her eyes were constantly watching the front walk to see him coming to her door. How would I react? How should I react? She often dreamed of him coming to her door and wanting to be with her again. She dreamed of being in his arms again. She dreamed of their ardent kisses and passionate love making. She felt so close to him back then. As these thoughts coursed through her mind, she frantically straightened up the house just in case. It felt so real. She was petrified, but full of anticipation at the same time. If there was anyone who could get close to her again, it was Rafe Dalton. In fact, he already had she mused. All of the old feelings had arisen from the grave where she had buried them. Knowing he had the power to hurt her was why she was petrified. The great times, the closeness they had, and the very strong feelings they had for each other was driving the excited anticipation. The nauseating feelings in her gut returned. She was so tense, her body was cramping. She couldn’t sleep. She was up all hours of the night pacing. She was a mess.
She decided to call Addison and find out what she knew. “Addy, it’s Alyx. How are you?”
“I am doing good, Alyx. How are you? What have you been up to?” she inquired.
“I was wondering if you have heard anything around town about Rafe Dalton.”
“Whoa what has brought this on? I thought you two were over with a long time ago.”
“I had the strangest feeling last Wednesday. I felt his presence. I thought maybe you might have heard something around town about him. The feeling was so strong, Addie, just like it was years ago. I felt him. It really has me all tied up in knots.”
“I haven’t heard anything, but then it has been a long time. I don’t recall anyone saying anything about seeing him or talking to him. Do you really think he is back in town?”
“I felt his presence so much that I turned around and expected to see him. A deputy’s truck drove by about that time. It was eerie. They say to trust your instincts and my instincts are telling me he is here.”
“If your instincts are right, what are you going to do if he shows up?”
“I have done a lot of thinking about that. I certainly have had the time to think about the situation. I decided that life is too short. I have lost so much time not being with him. It feels like a lifetime. I don’t care if he is married. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life without him.”
“Good for you. You go for it. You certainly do deserve it. I have seen how miserable you have been. You have an empty look in your eyes.”
“Wow I didn’t expect that answer out of you. I expected a lecture about dating a married man and the problems it would bring and how the gossip of the town would do me in.”
“I have just seen too many marriages where people stay together even when they are miserable. I agree - life is too short to be miserable. If that is what you two want, it is none of anyone’s business but yours. I say go for it. And good luck. Let me know what happens.”
“I certainly didn’t expect you to be on my side, Addy. I will keep you posted and thanks for being a good friend.”
As the day turned to night, there was no sign of him. Maybe she was making too much of this feeling that she sensed him nearby. But it was so strong, it was hard to ignore. She FELT him just like she used to 18 years ago. She felt his presence before she even saw him and felt his absence to the core. It is not like she had been pining away for him for the past 18 years. She had to bury her feelings and move on. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have survived. She couldn’t breathe.
Wow the thought of it being around 18 years hit her like a ton of bricks. Where did the time go? No one has even come close to stealing her heart again. She would not allow anyone to have that kind of power over her again. She basically has lived like a hermit. She would go to the office and go home. She had her horses and the ranch to tend to. She had her sons, their wives, and two adorable grandsons. She had a few flings throughout the years, but once they started getting too serious, she sent them packing- just like they treated her. Love them and leave them. Now here she is a virtual prisoner to those old feelings. She knows the disappointment is coming.
As she retired for the evening, she started to reminisce about the time when she and Rafe were lovers. There will be no sleep tonight.

Chapter Two
It was May in 1993. Alyx was working part-time in her friend Addy’s Western Store. As she approached the front door one morning, she noticed that the door was ajar and the glass in the window was broken. It had been broken into. She ran next door to the cafe to use their phone to call the Sheriff’s department. When the deputy arrived, she was immediately struck by the handsome deputy. He was over 6 feet tall, sandy brown hair just slightly beginning to show the gray of age in the temple area. He had to be close to her age. As he got out of his Sheriff’s truck and walked towards her, he had a slight intake of breath before he spoke. A shy grin fleetingly flashed across his face. It disappeared as fast as it showed up as he quickly put on the serious all business ‘Deputy Face’.
“Hello, I am Deputy Rafe Dalton” he said as he showed her his badge and held out his hand to shake hers.
“Hello, I am Alyxandra Jacobs” she replied as their hands touched. The electricity just coursed through her veins at his touch. She could tell he felt it too by the surprised look on his face.
“Are you the one who called this in to the Sheriff’s Department?” he asked.
“Yes, I just arrived and saw the door ajar and the window busted. I immediately went next door to call you. I have not touched anything or entered the building.” Her heart was pounding so loud she knew he could hear it. She took a deep breath trying to still her throbbing heart.
“That’s good. Are you the owner of the shop?” he inquired.
“No. “I am just working here
