A G IFT FROM S TINE ’ S S ISTER
Sunny knocked on the door of a rundown four-bedroom farmhouse. The windows were covered in years of dust, the shutters had crumbled to the ground, and the door was splintering from lack of care. This did not surprise Sunny. Stine’s father did not care about anything if he could not drink it or sell it for alcohol. Stine’s father was only in his late fifties, but he appeared to be closer to eighty years of age from his years of alcohol abuse.
He heard the voice of an elderly man yelling from within the old house as a young woman opened the door. "Can I help you?" It was Jane, Stine’s younger sister. Sunny could not wait to tell Stine his sister had come home for a visit. Sunny knew Stine wanted nothing to do with his father and that he missed his little sister deeply. Sunny knew Stine would be happy to hear she was doing well and would want to see her again. He wanted to ask her to stop by before she left town, but he needed to get Stine’s birth certificate before their wedding day.
"May I speak with your father, please?" Silver Wing needed to see Stine’s birth certificate before the wedding could take place. This was not something he would force Stine to do for him. It was just a piece of paper to Stine.
"He is ill and cannot have visitors right now. May I ask what this visit is about?"
"It is about Stine."
"Oh, what happened? Did he get into another fight?" Jane leaned against the door frame with a big smile on her face. She had heard the rumors going around town about her brother’s upcoming wedding to Sunny, but she did not want to assume anything. She hoped that Sunny would let the cat out of the bag before he left. She was trying to think of a way to get him to talk about her brother in a manner that would tell what she wanted to know. She just needed one little hint so she could ask the right question.
"No, it is nothing like that. He is running some errands and is doing well. I just wanted to stop by and see if I could get some of his things for him." Sunny smiled. "He is happy for once in his life."
"I’m glad to hear that. So, he is staying with you?"
"Yes, he is." Sunny tried not to blush as his thoughts drifted to Stine lying in his bed night after night for the last three years. Stine had made his life feel perfect. Stine gave him everything he could ever hope for from a lover, and Sunny was able to give him a better life in return.
"Can you wait here a moment? He took everything from his room with him when he moved out. I do have something for him. I know he can’t read it. Maybe you can explain it to him." She turned, going back inside the house.
"Who’s at the door?" Sunny could hear Stine’s father yelling. Sunny had met the man a few times before he and Stine started dating. He was not fond of this man any more than Stine was. He was a heavy drinker with a tendency to get into fights or take his anger out on his family.
"It is Sunny, Father," Jane yelled as she went to find the file with Stine’s paperwork. She did not know if Stine knew any of the information contained in his papers, but she wanted him to know why everyone in town treated him the way they did. She hoped it would help him realize it was not his fault.
"Tell him we don’t need no hay! I will grow my own!" Jane’s father yelled after her.
She grabbed a file from the desk drawer. "I will, Father." She returned to the front door and handed the file to Sunny. "Here you go. It isn’t much, but it will help him out at some point." Jane smiled. "I miss him. Do you think he would mind if I stopped by later?"
"No, not at all. I’m sure he would like to see you as well." Sunny’s smile widened. Jane was the only family member Stine was willing to talk about. Stine had told Sunny he wanted to see her again and hopefully get to meet his niece.
"He has a niece and a nephew. I would like him to meet them."
Sunny nodded with a grin on his face. "I know he would love to meet them."
"Great," she exclaimed. "We will stop by after lunch." She frowned. "It will be just the kids and me. I know how he feels about Father."
"He isn’t willing to talk to me about him." Sunny looked at the ground. "I have heard stories, and it doesn’t sound like they get along."
"No, my father is extremely strict and can be quite violent when he is drunk. Unfortunately, Franky got the worst of it."
"I have seen the scars." Sunny shivered. "He told me they are from your father but nothing else."
"In all honesty, I’m a little shocked he said anything. Normally, he will only talk to me or old man Lue. I am a little curious, what has he been up to?"
"He has made a few friends since you left." Sunny smiled. "I have even taken him to West Wood with me a few times. So, he has friends there as well. Night Rain and Running Bear take him hunting once a month."
"I’m glad he is coming out of his shell. I would love to stand here and talk all day, but I need to get lunch started. I’ll see you in a few hours or so."
"Thank you for this. I will look over them for him." He started his walk home. Stine had taken the wagon so he could get some of his stuff from the abandoned hut he had been staying in before their first night together. Sunny walked along the dirt road, clenching the papers to his chest. He could not wait to get home and learn more about his lover’s past.
S TINE ’ S S ECRET
Back home, Sunny got himself a plate of dried venison (Stine had made it the day before) and a few slices of cheese. He was not fond of deer meat, but whatever Stine had done to this batch made it taste sweet. He set his lunch on the nightstand and began to look over the papers Jane had given him. The first page read, "Birth Certificate." It stated that Stine’s legal name was "Franklin Louise Welts" and he was born on "June seventeenth of the year eighteen hundred and eighteen" to one "Mary Elizabeth Welts." To his surprise, there was no father listed on the document. It was a West Wood certificate and had been signed by Silver Wing herself.
Sunny ran his hand across the page, wondering how Stine had ended up in East Harvest. He did not know of any Mary Welts in West Wood or East Harvest. Could she have died giving birth to Stine? He still had many questions and this one page only brought about more. He knew where he could find the answers. He wondered if Stine knew about this or if it was kept a secret from him. He held the certificate to his chest as he began to read the next page.
Sunny did not look up when Stine got home. It was not unusual for him to be going over paperwork. He would always put it aside to greet Stine when he returned. Today, he did not. Sunny was holding on to one of the papers, pressing it to his chest as he read. Stine stepped in front of where he was sitting and knelt in front of him. He fed him a piece of cheese from the plate on the nightstand.
Sunny leaned forward, kissing Stine. "Thank you for the morsel of food."
Stine slid his hands up Sunny’s legs. "What are you reading, angel?"
"Adoption papers." Sunny looked up at Stine. He could see the concern in his eyes. Sunny already knew Stine did not want to raise children in East Harvest. Now he knew exactly why. Stine had shown him how the people of East Harvest treated orphans, but he had not told him it was because he was adopted.
"Sunny, you know …" Stine thought he had made it clear to Sunny that any child they adopted would not be welcome here. He did not want to see their children mistreated by anyone. He wanted them to be able to live without fear.
Sunny placed a finger on Stine’s lips. "They are yours, love. Did you know you were born in West Wood?" Sunny did not want to make Stine feel uncomfortable. He did not care that he had been adopted.
"No, where did you get those?" Stine wondered if Sunny had gone to see his father and asked for them.
"From your sister." Sunny smiled. "She wants to stop by later to see you."
"For what?" Stine stood up. He was shocked to hear his sister was back in town. He was even more shocked that Sunny had not made a big deal out of him being adopted. He knew the people in West Wood were different from the ones he knew here. It made him wonder if they would all accept him this easily once they knew the truth.
"She wants you to meet her kids." Sunny was still holding Stine’s birth certificate to his chest. "Is that okay with you?"
"Yeah, it is okay. I just don’t want you around that old man. If he hurt you, I …" Stine clenched his fist. "Please, love, next time you want to go over
