T HE BROTHERS SISTERS
I always take the first length slowly, reaching out and pulling gently against the water so that my body can adjust to the exercise. They call it a warm-up, but after the busy heat of the scorching Paris streets, it s more like getting acclimatised to an ice bath.
Swimming s something that s hard-wired into me, like my circuits were built when I was a young man and never really changed. Frozen in time, I suppose. Which meant that when I needed it back in my life, it was there. Like riding a bike.
When they told me the news about Sylvie, I came apart like the wings of Icarus. Fell so hard into the earth that my insides were spread around the planet. I was left with a mind that could only settle with medication and a heart that could barely find the strength to beat.
She d been driving to Versailles to make the final arrangements for our 25 th wedding anniversary. The driver of the lorry told the police he had no chance. That the car veered to the left without any warning and ploughed straight into him. I considered suing him so hard that all he d have left to wear would be the skin he was born in, but my grown up children showed all of their maturity and talked me out of it. The guy had done nothing wrong and the scars on his face and the limp he d have to tolerate for the rest of his life would be punishment enough. Besides, the police investigators were able to demonstrate beyond doubt that Sylvie s car had blown a tyre and that she d been going far too fast to maintain control. The truth is, I was lucky that the driver didn t sue me. I suppose I have his guilt and his nightmares to thank for hat.
For out anniversary celebrations, we had a band booked and the finest caterers in Paris had put together a menu with more courses than you could count on your fingers. It was all to start off with a quiz all about our lives. How we met. Where we lived. The journeys taken by our children. Our room for the night had a four-poster bed that we d tried out before we finalised the booking just to make sure. The four-poster thing wasn t quite what I d imagined.
