If you change the letters in God you get Dog, and is the nearest you will ever get to Him on earth in unconditional love. Thank you, God, for Henry. I would also like to thank Betty Rushton and Jean Opie for their belief that one day I would write this book. God bless them.

To Shaz, my best friend always, and one who expressed a genuine love for my writing, Praise Allah!

I thank also all of the readership for taking time to read this short novel. I hope you enjoy it as much as I had fun years ago writing it.

Chapter One

Atop the big palomino horse Jesse obtained a panoramic view of the bank, saloon, general store and all the other usual accoutrements of a new and growing town, the town of Sanford. Jesse took in the surroundings through slit eyes, surveying the arrival of some immigrant schooners, as she steadied the impatient stallion with a sure grip. Despite the persistent breeze, the sun s heat burned as Jesse spied the movements of a woman alighting from one of the parked nearside wagons. The long skirt s movement did little to hide her womanly curves, a pleasant sight to any cowhand, but to Jesse it was a bonus to the already welcome surroundings. Jesse had been on the trail all day after leaving the Star Bar Ranch, however, and still had an overwhelming need to get out of saddle and grab the first froth off a cool glass of beer; after which her horse would get its just rewards of some fresh oats and water, and the best rub-down a tossed quarter could buy.
Pushing open the lone saloon s batwings, Jesse s meaningful stride took creaking boot leather up to a mahogany bar. The saloon sported a new full-length mirror, reflecting an array of green and brown bottles of various gut-rot spread upon the adjoining shelf. Jesse ordered a beer and began to slake a desert-like thirst. After a few good swigs of the liquid Jesse surveyed the saloon proper. Wyoming was getting smaller with the arrival of immigrants pushing further west, and it was showing in the saloon.
Many were the tables bedecked with card sharps in ever increasing numbers. Sodbusters in unwelcome huddles, merchants, would be bankers, drifters, and any amount of budding politicians that an exodus attracts, and all drinking the cheaper type of gut-rot that Belle, the owner, had boiled for just such an occasion.
Today was Friday, the last Friday in the month, and that meant the cowhands from the surrounding ranches would descend upon the town expecting to whoop it up with Belle s beauties just as soon as they arrived. Then it was going to be a busy time from here on in for the Town s Sheriff.
Jesse s musings were suddenly interrupted by way of a side door swinging open to reveal the voluptuous mass of Belle, herself, capably sorting a skinny man with one barrel of an arm, whilst swigging the best grog the west could make with the aid of the other. The barman shuffled from behind the polished wood towards the couple to relieve Belle of her drunken burden, but Belle cackled something intelligible only to himself that sent him scurrying quickly back to his safe haven.
Belle took short shrift of the man, sending him head first through the batwings and out into the street. The regulars knew Belle of old and so were found deep in their own business, but the newcomers were staring in grim fascination at the scene they had just witnessed until they realised Belle s anger could soon find vent unless they, too, found their own business to attend!
Belle s angry glare connected with Jesse s amused half smile, and for a minute Belle pouted before succumbing with a yellow-toothed grin.
With a vice-like grip that could have killed a grizzly bear she embraced Jesse s slim frame, setting a cloud of trail dust from Jesse s buckskins that threatened to choke the saloon s populous.
Relinquishing her hold, Belle cackled, Jesse! Nice to know you re still around!
Jesse, feigning injury, returned, Well, if that s the kind of welcome I get every time I m in town no wonder I don t make a habit of visiting more often.
Awe, now you know ya love me, Jesse! What kind of a woman would I be if I didn t treat my favourites to a slice of all this cake? Her hands roved from top to bottom to emphasise the quality and quantity of cake on offer.
Laughingly the two friends embraced once more, and then Belle became serious. Jesse picked it up
So tell me what s on your mind, Belle.
Business! Belle answered shortly.
Well, I should have known! Jesse grinned. Too many punters and not too many girls, hey, Belle? Jesse was trying to buck the already darkening brow, but to no avail. Jesse, this is serious. She added, There s liable to be no end of business for my saloon if I can keep up with the trade!
But, what happens when the regulars come in from the ranches?
There s gonna be hell to pay if I don t get some more girls in soon. I need a barman to help with the extra load, and to top it all there s a young girl trying to convince me that she s fresh out of a Dodge City Whorehouse!
Well, I can t do much for your barman trouble, but maybe I could throw a little business your way with the girls! Jesse still could not take Belle s predicament seriously, but seeing her face so troubled, thought that a little sobriety was needed. Okay, okay! I ll stop foolin . Look, with all the immigrants coming in there s bound to be some big fellas looking for work, and sooner or later, the girls back east will get wind of this town and start looking for new horizons. It always happens. Now, relax. Tell me about your new floozy.
Belle was quickly on the defensive. Jesse! She s no floozy, d ya hear! She s a lady.
Then how come she s pestering you for a job? Jesse puzzled.
Every girl has a reason. This girl probably can t get a place to stay. Places are all fully booked, ya know that. Belle philosophised, If I had a dollar for every time a girl came in here as their last resort I d be the richest Madame in Wyoming!
Well, you just said that ya could do with some new girls. Jesse reasoned.
Look, I just don t see the point of offering this particular girl the job. She d be in it for two minutes and the next thing I know, the cowboys are complaining of getting slapped or being refused their simple pleasures. Belle looked at Jesse appealingly. Couldn t you do something for me?
And what do ya suggest I do? Jesse asked incredulously. By what ya ve said she s already tried the places around town. How am I supposed to get her out of ya hair?
Belle gazed at Jesse in that all too familiar, knowing way.
No! Jesse stated firmly. I m not doing that again!
Belle was maybe a little on the large side, but this only served to accentuate a woman s natural charms. She wasn t unattractive, and she knew just how to appeal in the right way when she wanted something. She was turning on those charms for Jesse right now, and Jesse knew it was only a matter of time before Belle achieved her goal.
I ve just got in, Belle. Give a body a chance to freshen up at least! Jesse squirmed. And what about my Palomino?
Charlie! Belle screeched towards the guy behind the bar. Send someone to tend to Jesse s mount, and give Jesse a bottle from under the counter. Turning back to face Jesse she said, Don t say I never give ya nothin . And there s a breakfast in it for ya in the morning, too!
Holding arms akimbo, Jesse still had room for a bargain as she conceded, But,hey, ya still owe me one after this!
Cocking one eyebrow suggestively Belle said, Ya can visit my boudoir anytime, day or night, and I ll show ya how a real woman works!
The conversation trailed off at this time with the barman delivering the whisky, and a shot glass. Jesse uncorked the bottle and poured some of the liquor into the small receptacle and downed the shot in one.
Shortly, Belle was seen shimmying towards the back room, to the right of the bar, where the young girl was ensconced, leaving Jesse to down some Dutch courage in preparation for the long night ahead.
It wasn t long before Belle returned, alone however. The girl is in the back room awaiting your pleasures. she whispered, not without a sly grin.
Jesse was not looking forward to this one bit. To do what was to be done went against the grain, but it was ironic that Belle could crack the best resolve with that appealing look of hers. Besides the fact, Jesse hadn t laid eyes on the fairer sex for months, save watching the emigra
