Do you wake up at 3 a.m. and your mind goes round and round? Do you struggle to know God? 3 am: Journey to God through Poetry is the story of one man's personal quest for a relationship with God. Lee Viersen spent countless nights wracked by doubt and worry and chose to express that struggle in his writing. Through his struggle came strength in both God and art. I wish to acknowledge all of the help from my family including my sister, Helen Poole, whose photography is part of this book. My nieces, Laura and Ginger Jernigan, gave me ideas, helped organize and edit. My sister in law, Donna Whaley, who provided ideas for the book. Finally, many members of my church helped in narrowing down a wide body of Lee’s work.

Preface
3 AM, I am sure you are wondering about the title of this book. As you read further you will see one of the first poems is 3 AM. That is the time of the night when you wake up and can not get back to sleep. The time you are plagued with worries, and doubts. The time you are lonely, depressed and things seem to be the da rkest.
Why did I decide to publish this book? I wanted people to understand my husband’s struggle and journey. He was like many people surrounded by doubts and the feeling of being unworthy of God’s grace.
I started with the idea of just putting together a bunch of his poems. I felt God wanted me to do more. He wanted me to tell Lee’s story. He kept urging me. God talked to Lee in these last years. There was no doubt about it. You can see it in his poetry. Perhaps others are awake at 3 AM and will find comfort through Lee’s journey t o God.
Through reading this book you will get to know my husband.
