Trevor’s Island
Trevor lived with his parents on a small island. Now that he was old enough, he would be going to school on the mainland and staying with his Uncle Bill. He felt very sad to be leaving his parents and moving to the mainland. He loved the island so much. He would miss playing among the rocks and sandy coves and watching the lights of the fishing boats from his bedroom window each night, as they sailed by.
The first night in his new room, he lay awake, unable to sleep... thinking of the sea and his home far away. Crying softly, he tossed and turned in his bed. He noticed the moonlight making patterns on the wall. One moonbeam seemed to make the shape of a small boat, sailing toward a tiny island. Trevor stared at it, intently.
How like it is he thought sadly. The sails were billowing in the breeze, bobbing up and down in gentle waves, coming closer to the island. Puzzled, Trevor got up and went over to the wall for a closer look.
A soft voice whispered, “Come with me, Trevor. Come now.”
Trevor clapped his hands over his ears and shook his head furiously. A whooshing, whirring noise filled the room. The noise grew louder and louder, causing his head to ache. He kept his ears covered, trying to blot out the deafening noise.
Again, the soft, echoing voice pleaded, “Come on. Come with me now !”
With his head spinning, he stumbled closer. Suddenly, he felt himself being pulled into the picture by invisible hands and then he found himself on board the boat! A cool sea breeze ruffled his hair. The trees and hills of the island loomed nearer as he sailed into a shallow bay.
Trevor jumped ashore. In trembling excitement, he ran along the sands. In and out of caves, he went... leaping high over rock pools, anxious to explore every inch of the island. Breathless, he sat down beside a pool. He pinched his arms until they were quite red, to see if he were dreaming. Sure that he must be dreaming, yet not totally convinced, he dangled his toes over the pool. Just as he went to dip them in the water, he was startled to hear someone speak to him.
“Don’t you dare!” a shrill voice ordered. “My children are asleep. If you wake them up I’ll nip your toes, hard!”
On the far side of the pool sat a strange crab. She wore a long green gown, a necklace, and lots of jangling bangles. Perched on her head was an enormous hat of gorse and heather flowers.
“How would you like two great feet to come into your bedroom? I can’t think what you’re doing here, anyway. Have you no manners, boy? It’s rude to stare,” she finished crossly.
After blinking his eyes two or three times, he found her still there, glaring at him. He gulped, trying to speak.
“S-sorry , I d-didn’t mean to be rude,” he stammered. “I don’t know how I came here. The boat brought me.”
He waited nervously for her reply, trying hard not to stare. The crab said nothing. She looked curiously at the boy’s flushed face and tousled hair. Trevor squirmed beneath her gaze, fidgeting and wondering what to say.
Fixing her hat, she drew a long breath and sighed. “Well, you seem to be a nice boy after all. I’m going to the evening ball. You may come if you like.”
Trevor thanked her and was pleased that she was no longer cross with him. He raced after her as she scuttled across the rocks. When he turned the corner, he immediately heard the music of a band, blaring loudly. There on the sands, were sea creatures of every shape and size. They were all dressed in their very best, dancing jigs and reels as if their lives depended on them. Trevor stood and stared in disbelief.
On one side was the band, all in smart military uniforms, playing as loudly as they could. Sand worms played flutes, sea horses blew shining trumpets with great gusto and a large lobster beat two huge drums at once. Squids scraped their bows across violins. The neatly-dressed conductor was an eel, wearing a long black coat and waving a slender piece of driftwood, as he conducted the strange, fishy orchestra.
Young shrimps shoved each other, trying to be first to feed from a long rock table, filled with all kinds of seaweed jelly and cakes. In an old, broken rowing boat, a whale sat grandly, smiling and waving at the dancers as they passed by. His huge tail beat on the sand in time to the music. The lady crab scurried away to gossip with her friends... leaving Trevor, looking about in wonder.
“Come sit with me,” the whale bellowed.
Trevor was so proud. He felt as though he were the luckiest boy in the world. He hoped it was not a dream. He and the whale ate, then played chase among the rocks. Trevor danced with all manner of fish until he was so tired that he could dance and run no more.
When the ball was over, he was led back to the little boat. All his new fish friends came to see him off. The whale gave him a little shell to put in his pajama pocket.
“Come back tomorrow,” they called after him, as the boat sailed away.
Trevor rubbed his eyes, then looked up to see Uncle Bill, standing beside his bed.
“Did you have a good night…? Not too homesick?” he asked kindly.
Surprised to find that he was not a bit tired, Trevor felt in his pocket for the shell. It was there! His island was real, not a dream. What fun he was going to have!
“No, Uncle Bill. I know I’m going to be very happy here!” he replied, smiling.

Tracy’s Wish
“I wish I didn’t have to go. I wish there was no school today,” Tracy muttered, struggling with her Wellington boots.
