Description

In this short story, a pleasant afternoon carriage ride lends itself to philosophical chitchat between two passengers, who muse together about the nature of life and love. When tragedy suddenly strikes, one of the young men finds himself promising to carry out a potentially awkward mission, but he keeps his word -- and learns a few lessons in the process.

I have always longed to tell a simple and true story, which shouldstrike terror into two young lovers, and drive them to take refuge eachin the other's heart, as two children cling together at the sight of asnake by a woodside. At the risk of spoiling my story and of being takenfor a coxcomb, I state my intention at the outset.
I myself played a part in this almost commonplace tragedy; so if itfails to interest you, the failure will be in part my own fault, inpart owing to historical veracity. Plenty of things in real life aresuperlatively uninteresting; so that it is one-half of art to selectfrom realities those which contain possibilities of poetry.
In 1819 I was traveling from Paris to Moulins.
