Introduction
Innovate! 90 Days to Transform Your Business has been put together for those who are willing to follow a disciplined 90-day habit of innovation in thought and action.
If you are tired of hearing that you need to be innovative, without being told how, this is the book for you. If you and your company sincerely practise the steps outlined here, there is no doubt that you will soon become an innovation star (See page ix)!
Just as foundations are critical to buildings and a nest egg important to build a great fortune, time and effort is needed to create an innovative organization. Innovate! 90 Days to Transform your Business is the plan of action which will help you to learn the tools and habits of innovation to transform yourself and your organization.
This 90-day blueprint is a roadmap for transformation through discovery, invention and innovation that can position your company better in terms of profitability, customer satisfaction and employee engagement.
First, read the book through once. Speak to your company and get a team to practice the ideas with you daily. Like Weight Watchers, it is much more fun and far more effective when you have friends and team mates to work with. Get top management buy-in. Apply these changes in your unit, your branch or even company. Start the process—one day at a time.
Innovate!
Illustrates how to use innovation thinking tools in different business activities, from planning strategy to creating better customer focus.
Offers solutions that can be customized to your unique situation, not rigid formulas that may or may not fit.
Alerts you to the dangers that can derail the innovation initiative.
Uses real-life success stories to illustrate the concepts, tools and challenges.
The Positive Cycle of an Innovation Star

Use the tools, techniques and methods, as described in the Mindspower Process Map (See page x), to take you from where you are currently to becoming an innovation star. Additional material is included on my website www.mindspower.com and can be accessed by you and your colleagues for free to provide background information and additional tools and guidelines.

Day 1: Understand the 90-Day Process
The ideal action team for the innovation initiative has about twenty-five participants who will later lead teams. This team will finally grow to include everyone in the company.
It is very important to identify the challenges that face the company and ensure that the problems chosen have true strategic importance. If this step is ignored, organizational energy could be wasted on trivial issues. Thus the outcome of each problem should be carefully studied so that only high-impact issues and solutions are chosen.
Identify a goal that creates excitement and energy. This could be a general goal which can be refined later. The goal could be, ‘To become a 1000 crore company’, or, ‘To reduce costs by 50 per cent’ or even, ‘To create a customer fan club’. Unless excitement or energy, and a positive field, are created around the initiative, revolutionary change cannot take-off. The slogan of that single unchanging word ‘change’ defines the field created around Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. From being a rank outsider, he became the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate and the forty-fourth president of the US. The field is created by a clear, consistent, credible goal, shared by millions. It reminds everyone of Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream!’ or Gandhiji’s ‘Quit India!’
Creating a positive field around the idea is the most important first step in starting the innovation initiative.
Enthusiasm, excitement and playfulness create a climate where creativity can germinate and innovation can branch into a productive, sheltering tree. The study of how to create a positive field will be a lifelong endeavour. It will flow through the 90 days like a life-giving river. But today, consciously install the positive field in your mind and in the minds of your team. Let everyone have a vision of the 90-day process. Study this map together ( Figure 1.1 ).
This map outlines the action plan where questions are created:

Figure 1.1
Review the innovation process that you will follow for the next 90 days. Begin with the end in mind.
Companies that have invested in practising the 90-day programme have reported that this is a practice that definitely improves the bottom line. Customers and suppliers are networked into a process that is mutually beneficial. The impact of this workout on, for example, customer satisfaction, stems from making them an active, creative partner rather than a passive consumer of the company’s products or services.
There is no doubt that the 90-day initiative will release the proactive, bubbling energies of an empowered, enthusiastic work force.

REFLECTION AND ACTION
DAY 1
Every day, persuade your team to introduce four good action habits which will enhance your performance. Look for action plans at the end of each of the 90 days.
The lack of resources forces us to innovate.
