Dedication

This book is dedicated to the many people who have helped me learn about myself and about life.
It is also dedicated to gay men and women everywhere. May they be free to express their sexuality.
Acknowledgments

My thanks are due to the many people, especially to Nettie Pollard and to Russell Sax, who have, directly or indirectly, helped stimulate my literary ambitions.
Foreword

Some of these stories in this book describe gay sex, violence and various forms of BDSM (bondage, domination, submission and sadomasochism). All the stories are fiction and none are meant as models for behaviour.
Any reader who engages in BDSM should follow the accepted code, which states that all activity must be, "safe, sane and consensual.”
In some countries, both gay sex and BDSM may still, regrettably, be subject to restrictive laws.

The Desert Cure
There were two sleeping mats in the tent. Connor lay naked on one mat. Alex Wicklan, dressed in shirt and lightweight trousers, lay on the other mat. It was midday and the temperature must have been near 50 0 C and 50 0 is hot. The tent provided them with shelter from the sun and let the slight breeze through but it still felt like the inside of an oven.
Alex had made his camp on the Western edge of the Nullarbor Plain about twenty miles north of the Eyre Highway, a road that runs across the south of Western Australia and Central Australia. He visited the area for up to two months at a time to study the ecology of the desert invertebrates. It had already occupied three years of his life and promised to occupy him for many more.
His camp was simple: two tents, one for living and one for working, a land-cruiser adapted for the desert, and an area for cooking.
It was the fifth day of the trip. Alex was looking at Connor who lay on his back, his far leg bent and his back slightly arched in the typical pose of the gay porn star. Indeed, he seemed to have modelled himself on a porn star. He had the long bleached hair and that bland look with a half-smile that seemed to be their trademark. Connor let his smile drop and tried a pout.
Alex did not react. He usually worked alone and he was beginning to regret agreeing to have Connor as his assistant. He thought back to how it had happened. Connor’s Father, George, and he had studied together at University. Surprisingly they became good friends, surprising since even then Alex was gay while George was straight. Still it didn't seem to bother George that Alex was gay, so it didn't bother Alex that George was straight.
Alex became Research Fellow at the University while George became a businessman. Now, some twenty years later, George was rich with a pretty wife and a teenage son while Alex spent his time doing research into the ecology of the Nullarbor Plain. Alex might have envied George but his wife, Mary, turned out to be rather dull and Connor, his only son, didn’t seem to be anything special.
After they left University they only met occasionally, neither having much spare time. The last occasion was instigated by George. After the usual pleasantries, George suggested they had lunch at a rather smart pub where they could catch up on activities. There was also, he said, something he wanted to discuss.
After the meal and a bottle of wine, George brought up the subject of Connor. “You’ve met Connor haven’t you?”
“Once or twice, when he was young.”
“He’s grown up now and I’m worried. He’s changed. You wouldn’t recognise him.”
“Children do change.” Alex was being careful.
George nodded, and then went silent. He wanted to say something but didn’t seem to be able to find the words.
“Changed how?”
“He’s gay, you know and he started taking drugs. Perhaps that’s what gay people do.”
“And perhaps it isn’t.” It came out sharper than he had intended.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean… but I’m worried. He’s an addict. We tried rehab but it didn’t work; I think he still got drugs. Anyway, he stole some money to buy drugs and he got caught. I came to an arrangement with the judge, he’s been released into my custody but I’m the last person to control him.”
Alex was puzzled. “How’s that?”
“Well I, we, brought him up to be himself. We gave him what he needed but we tried not to fuss over him and we gave him the freedom to develop. It was Mary’s idea and I was too busy making money to interfere. He told us he was gay and we didn’t make a big thing of it. We didn’t know he was into drugs until he was arrested. That came as a big shock, but it was of no use me blowing my top, he’d already learnt that he could ignore anything either of us said. I didn’t know what to do so I talked to Professor Stark, you remember in the Psychology Department.”
“And…?”
“And he said, ‘take him away from drugs. After he’s been clean for a month or so, if he still needs help, I could try to do something for him.”
Alex had fallen into the trap. ”Sounds like a good idea.”
“And I thought there’s only one way to be sure to keep him away from drugs; that’s if he went with you on one of your desert trips, as an assistant. We’ll miss him, Mary especially, she even gets worried when he’s away for a few hours without telling her but it seems to be the only solution. Of course I’d be willing to pay.”
After much persuasion, Alex had agreed to take Connor along as his assistant, so long as Connor agreed. Naturally, Alex refused to take any payment though he did accept expenses. He rather doubted if Connor would agree but it's amazing what the threat of a term in a tough Aussie prison will do.
The distance between Perth and Alex’s field area near Eucla was about 1,500 km which would take about three days driving if Alex had a co-driver, but he hadn’t, so it took four days. On the first day, Connor seemed interested. Not surprising since he hadn’t been out of Perth before and the countryside is very different to the city and the beach. Each night they camped by the roadside. The first night Connor was nervous. “Are you sure there are no snakes?” he asked, “I don’t want to die out here.”
“No snakes, at least where we are camping,” Connor assured him.
Then it was the dingoes. As soon as it was dusk, they began to howl. “Are you sure they won’t attack us as we sleep?”
“They won’t, we’re far too big.”
After that, Connor seemed to lose interest. He dozed through most of the day, and was quite subdued even at meals, and still he could sleep at night. Perhaps he had drugs that helped.
When we reached the camp area, we put up the sleeping and the general purpose tent. After that, Connor seemed more at home. For about a week, he proved quite helpful. He cooked meals, kept the site tidy and was good company. During the next two days, however, he showed signs of stress. Alex then realised that he was, by his own choice, alone in a desert with a gay and probably increasingly desperate druggie.
Connor turned to lie on his side. He now faced Alex. His lips formed an invitation, but his eyes were dead.
Alex wondered if any of Connor’s stash remained. He hadn't tried to stop Connor bringing drugs. He knew that sooner or later they would run out and that there would be no way to replace them.
"Alex, I think I should tell you something,” Connor tried a seductive whisper. ”You know I rather like older men, well you, really. Why not, like, relax, eh?"
Alex gave him a faint smile. It really wasn't worth a reply. He supposed it had worked with others but it didn’t work with him. Connor was attractive is a puppyish sort of way but not really his type.
Connor waited awhile before trying a different approach. "We must be running low on food by now. When are you planning on going to town?"
"We'll survive." Alex said bluntly. He always carried enough basic food for the whole trip and he had an emergency cache that he had set up on the previous trip. Mentally he tried to predict how Connor would react when he started getting withdrawal symptoms. He might try begging or else bribing Alex to get him drugs. Probably the first steps of bribery had already started.
Alex considered other ways Connor might try to get drugs. He might destroy any food that he could find in the hope that Alex would go into town with him. Alex smiled to himself. Connor didn’t know about the caches. He might try to steal the land-cruiser but Alex always removed the rotor and kept it with him when he left the vehicle. Another possibility was that Connor would try threatening or even attacking him. That could be interesting since he was quite big and could handle himself in a fight.
