INTRODUCTION

Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1854 to Jane Francesca Elgee (a writer whose pen name was ‘Speranza’) and William Robert Wills Wilde (a successful eye and ear surgeon).

One of the greatest playwrights of his time, Wilde was also a novelist, poet, essayist and celebrated wit, noted for his involvement in the arts movement Aestheticism. Amongst his many successes were his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), and plays such as Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892), An Ideal Husband (1895) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).

Wilde’s education consisted of home schooling and the Portora Royal School (Enniskillen), then Trinity College (Dublin) and Magdalen College (Oxford) where he advanced his love of the classics.

It was in London that Wilde became something of a celebrity, as much for his flamboyant dress sense and long hair as for his acerbic wit.

In 1884, Wilde married Constance Mary Lloyd and they went on to have two sons, Cyril and Vyvyan.

Wilde’s relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas (nicknamed ‘Bosie’) was to be his undoing when, in 1895, he sued Douglas’ father, the Marquess of Queensberry, for libel (the Marquess had accused Wilde of being homosexual – illegal in Britain at the time). Wilde lost his case and had to pay the huge expenses of the trial. In addition to this, he was then arrested for sodomy and gross indecency which, after more trials, led to two years of hard labour in prison. It was during his imprisonment that he wrote De Profundis .

Whilst Wilde was in prison, Constance went to Europe. In a bid to extricate herself and her sons from Wilde’s scandal, she changed their surnames to Holland. She died in Genoa, Italy, in 1898 and her family took steps to prevent Wilde from seeing his sons again.

Wilde was released from prison in 1897 and went into exile in Europe, under the name of Sebastian Melmoth, with his friend and mentor Robert Ross.

He died of cerebral meningitis whilst in Paris in 1900 and is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, in a tomb designed by Sir Jacob Epstein.

This compilation brings together snippets from a wide range of Wilde’s work and showcases the wit and wisdom for which he is renowned.
