Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The nature of the material itself seems to call for the fol lowing Classification, which has been adhered to in the present memoir: (i) myths or traditional narratives, in the truth of which the Hurons and Wyandots used to believe; (ii) tales, acknowledged by them to be mere fiction; and (iii) traditions or narratives bearing on the history of the tribe. In the mythology proper are included: (a) traditional accounts and description of the origin of the world, the cosmo gonic deities, and beings; (b) etiological myths on a number of natural phenomena 2 and (c) various social events of the past.'
