That the spur would urge us beyond our capacity and expose us to the criticism of those who cannot understand was only to be feared and expected. Our own private lives were so much bound up with his during those years, that they cannot be separated. The pedantic may sneer at the trivialities of this book and the unsympathetic may scoff at our weakness, but we cannot let the personal reputation.
