Packing
Toby knelt in front of Granny and Grandpa s secret drawer, in their old bureau. He turned the key in the lock.
Quick, Toby, be quick, I think Granny s coming, Alice whispered.
Shhh, I can t concentrate with you jumping around.
Toby eased out a folded piece of what looked like a very old newspaper.
What does it say? said Alice, edging closer. Read it out loud.
Alice wait, it s really delicate, it s going to rip if I m not careful. Toby saw Alice stretching out her hand to grab the paper. He stepped back and started reading. Yesterday the emin The emin em something
Ohh - just let me read it said Alice, leaning forward and snatching the paper from Toby s hand. Its EMINENT, silly.
Toby sighed. He was used to that sort of comment from his twin sister. His dyslexia made reading and writing much harder for him.
Alice read aloud.
Yesterday, the eminent Dr Andres Dakila, of Manila University revealed that two mysterious eggs had been washed up on the beach at the south of Pamalican Island. Pamalican Island has been traditionally known for its monitor lizard population. However in recent years the lizards on the Island have failed to produce eggs. Or so it was thought.
These eggs are a miracle explained Dr Dakila at a press conference. We believe the eggs were laid about six months ago and should hatch within the next eight weeks. It has been a very happy discovery for us here on Pamalican. We have no idea where the eggs have come from. We will just have to wait until they hatch.
That s weird Its about Pamalican Island, where we re going on holiday tomorrow with Granny and Grandpa Alice said.
Toby looked at his sister.
So why have they kept such an old paper? Alice was saying. Maybe the professor is a relation? What are monitor lizards anyway?
But Toby had found something more interesting - a letter he could read. It was written on crisp white notepaper. It had a picture of dragons or lizards at the top and Pamalican Island and the date just underneath.
Toby scrunched up his face. His dark bushy eyebrows almost joined together. What s going on? Before he could tell Alice about the letter, she was right behind him forcing the newspaper back in the drawer.
Didn t you hear me? Alice said. Granny s coming, hurry up we mustn t let her see
Toby slammed the drawer shut, catching the end of his finger.
Owww he yelled, then jammed the key into his pocket.
Shhh said Alice, shoving him aside.
They jumped up running to the door. Toby couldn t resist a quick pull at Alice s blonde ponytail swinging down her back. Granny appeared in the doorway. Her reading glasses were, as usual on top of her head, pulling her almost black, pixie hair back off her face.
Children what are you doing? said Granny. You haven t lost Lizzy again have you?
We just weren t sure we d put the lid on the cage properly, said Alice. So we thought we d better check she hadn t escaped into your room. Isn t that right Toby? Alice nudged him.
Toby looked at the ground.
Oh yes, yes that s what we were doing, he said, shuffling his feet.
Hmmm, said Granny, giving them a look. Well, have you the checked the cage?
Of course, Alice said, hitching up her skirt.
Toby could see Granny didn t really believe them.
Come on then, guys, Granny said. Grandpa s almost finished making the spaghetti Bolognaise.
Granny, I m just going to check Lizzy s water, said Toby, breathing in the delicious smell of his favourite meal.
He was already half way back down the corridor. He dived onto his bed sending his comic and all Granny s green cushions flying. Poking his head under the bed, he could feel the little jar, where they d found the key earlier. He pulled the key out of his pocket, popped it into the jar and slid down onto the floor next to Lizzy s cage. There she was, sitting on her stone under her little sun lamp.
Mum hated lizards so Lizzy lived in Wimbledon with Granny and Grandpa. It was great because Granny loved lizards and she was at home most of the time - unlike Mum who was always at work. So, as Mum said, Granny had plenty of time to look after Lizzy.
I wish I had a hot stone to lie on, Toby said, without thinking.
Oh me too - bliss, said Granny, poking her head round the door. This time tomorrow we ll be on Pamalican and we ll all be basking in the sun.
