Introduction
The Mahabharata was written by the elephant God, Lord Ganesha thousands of years ago. This was written in Sanskrit in the form of a very long poem with thousands of verses. The Mahabharata had been composed by the sage Ved Vyasa. The sage was looking for a good scribe to write the book. Someone suggested him to ask the son of Lord Shiva, Ganesha to do this task. He approached Ganesha and explained what he wanted him to do. Ganesha agreed to write the epic for Ved Vyasa. However, he put forth a condition. He told the sage that he would write only if he dictated the poem non-stop to him. This was a strange task and somewhat difficult to perform. But Ved Vyasa agreed saying that he would dictate to him non-stop but nothing would be written down by him without understanding what it meant. Ganesha too agreed to this condition and wrote down the Mahabharata.
The Mahabharata, in short, is a story of the dynasty of king Shantanu, the ruler of Hastinapur. It is a story about the decisions taken by his successors and the Royal household, that determined to a great extent the fate of not only Bharatavarsha but also India. A lot revolves around the Kauravas and the Pandavas, who were cousin brothers. Duryodhana was the eldest amongst the Kaurava brothers and was the son of Dhritarashtra. Yudhishtira, Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva were five brothers and were called as the Pandavas because they were the sons of Pandu. Kunti was the mother of the Pandavas. The story of the Mahabharata revolves around how the Kauravas tried to get rid of the Pandavas and to stake claim to the throne of Hastinapur and how finally both the groups ended up fighting a war against each other. Finally, the Pandavas won the war, not much good was done but everything was destroyed in the war and hence, after making Parikshit the king, the Pandavas left Hastinapur forever.
