ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In spite of being born in a log cabin in South Porcupine Ontario at the beginning of the Great Depression, (there is no North Porcupine!) Ray Stone never became President of anything. Well actually he is Past President of the National Press Club of Canada, and President of C.R.A.P. the Committee for the Removal of Artistic Pollution. This fact will cause further angst among the political correctoids who are forewarned not to read this book. His school and street education in Windsor Ontario has given him a rather warped view of society, and in particular, the vehicularly challenged among us. He survived a decade or so in the RCAF (Post-war) including a brief stint with NATO in Europe and two years as a Public Relations Officer at a NORAD base in Northern Michigan. Following his voluntary release from the Air Force, with the rank of Squadron Leader - (Major) he worked for the CBC as a ‘talking head’ before returning to Ottawa to work as a Special Assistant to several Cabinet Ministers. He rounded out his career with the Public Service as Head of the film, video and exhibits division of Transport Canada Public Affairs. Since retiring from the ‘Feds’, he has free-lanced for the CBC, acted in many films, hosted a variety of television series’, and was moderator of a phone-in radio show “Experts On Call” on News-Talk Radio, 580-CFRA in Ottawa for fifteen years. His first book, “Women Can’t Merge, Men Won’t Yield” is an equal opportunity rant against stupid male drivers and oblivious female drivers. His recent book ‘The “JOY” of Smoking’ is a life-line to anyone trying to kick the habit. Ray accompanied Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his new wife Margaret on their ten day honeymoon cruise through Canada’s Maritime Provinces.

CHAPTER 1
THE BEGINNING
At last! Summer holidays are here, and Simon is looking forward to two months filled with all kinds of exciting adventures. Simon is twelve years old, and a pretty good student. He has passed into grade seven with mostly ‘A’s, a couple of ‘B’s and one ‘C’ - (in paying attention.) He’s a day-dreamer sometimes.
Now he’s free to get up every morning and do all of the things he has been planning for the past few months. His parents are going to take him and his little brother Colter to the zoo, his Scout group is getting ready for a camping trip to Yellowstone Park, and best of all, the circus is coming to town in two weeks!
But today, Simon and his dog Algernon are just going to go for a run in the woods. Algernon is an unknown breed … sort of a mixed Retriever/ Alsatian/Beagle/Husky. Besides being Simon’s constant companion, he is one of the most curious dogs Simon has ever seen. But what Simon and Algernon didn’t know was that this run in the woods would turn out to be the most exciting adventure they would ever have.
Algernon loved to chase rabbits and squirrels. He never caught one, and he probably didn’t really want to. He just liked to chase them until they disappeared down a hole or up a tree. Simon and Algernon stopped beside a small lily-pad covered pond to watch the antics of a few tadpoles trying out their newly sprouting legs, when a curious gray rabbit hopped into sight. Algernon was off like a streak of light, with the rabbit bounding along just in front of him. Simon decided to see how the chase would end, and took off right behind his excited dog.
They raced along the path for a few yards, and then the rabbit suddenly darted down a hill and through a patch of wild raspberry bushes. Algernon was right behind the rabbit, and Simon raced along about twenty feet behind him. Up the other side of the hill they ran. The rabbit headed for a huge maple tree growing right next to the meadow. He darted around the tree, and two seconds later Algernon saw the tail end of the scared rabbit as he darted down a hole under a rock.
Just at that moment, Simon dashed around the tree. He was just about to slow down, when WHAM ! He ran into something … but there was nothing there! He was really amazed, because it felt just like crashing into one of the guys on the other team when you’re playing football or soccer … except there wasn’t anybody there!
Simon bounced off the invisible object and hit the ground. For a couple of seconds he saw stars and had his breath knocked out of him. It took him a minute to get back on his feet, but except for a slightly sore shoulder and bruised ribs, he was OK.
Algernon trotted over to him to see what was wrong. Then he did something really strange. He turned and stared at a spot on the ground beside the rock. The hair was standing up along the back of his neck. He wasn’t really growling … just making a strange low sound in the back of his throat. Simon was really puzzled because Algernon had never behaved like this before. Then Algernon slowly approached the rock and sniffed at a place in the grass. Simon noticed that the grass where Algernon was sniffing was flattened out … as if something had been lying on it. And as he stared at the flattened grass, something unbelievable happened. Simon’s eyes bugged out of his head when he saw it.
Algernon jumped back and whimpered, sticking close to Simon’s legs. Then they both stared in amazement. Before their very eyes they saw a shape start to appear lying on the flattened grass. It started as a fuzzy, hazy, glowing transparent thing, and slowly transformed into a boy about Simon’s size. But this boy was really different. He was GREEN! Not a weird green, but a kind of apple green. And he was out like a light.
It took Simon a couple of seconds to get over the shock of seeing someone suddenly appear out of nowhere, but his first-aid training from school and cubs suddenly took over, and he knelt beside the green boy to see what was wrong with him. It didn’t take long to discover that he had banged his head on a rock. Obviously this was the invisible object Simon had crashed into, and although Simon had been only winded, the green boy had been knocked out when he hit the rock.
There was a dark green bruise on his forehead, and a cut with a little green blood coming out. GREEN BLOOD!? Simon was amazed. He took a second to figure out what to do, and he studied the green boy more closely. He was just about Simon’s size, and he looked just like any other twelve-year-old, except of course for his color. There was one other difference. It took Simon a few seconds to notice it, but this strange boy had something unusual growing out of his head. Feathers.
Instead of hair, there was a covering of short, light green feathers … small ones like the feathers that grow on a bird’s head.
“Strange” thought Simon, “but we’ll worry about that after we take care of that bump”. Simon quickly found a stream of clear spring water. He soaked his handkerchief in it and went back to where Algernon was guarding the unconscious boy. Simon gently cleaned the cut and applied the cool cloth to the bump. It didn’t look as if there were any broken bones, but Simon decided not to move the boy just in case there were.
Suddenly the green boy’s eyelids started to flicker. When he opened them, he looked dazed and confused for a few seconds. Then when he saw Simon peering at him so closely, a look of panic came over him.
