THE ADVENTURES OF THE LUV-A-BUGS II
‘SOMETHING TO SAY’
All of Nature’s Critters are eagerly awaiting the start of the General Meeting at the Public Park Pond. Honest Owl, Iris Chameleon and Pitch-in Pigeon watch with anticipation from the high boughs of Weeping Willow Tree. They too have their stories to tell! It is Mr. Hopper Toad’s job to officiate the meetings. When Mr. Hopper hops onto the old, rusted sundial all attendees rise to attention as he leads them out in their aim and motto.
Under Hopper’s direction Nature’s Critters oblige: “Aim high! Reach for the sky! Never let a helping chance pass us by!”
Next, they repeat their motto, “Do good for our Human Beings and that good will come back to us.” Hopper continues, “And what is that called?” As usual, the cluster loudly sing out in unison, “Karma!”

Today’s meeting promises to be exciting because every Critter who made Luv-a-Bug Card deliveries will give their reports. Since the last meeting victories have happened that give reasons to celebrate! The Critters start to cheer loudly, but Mr. Hopper speaks over the noise, giving them an ominous warning, “But, there are still concerns lingering in the environment . Let’s remain vigilant, Critts.”
As they settle down, Mr. Hopper raises himself high on his back legs, scans the crowd of Critters and grins his approval of the numbers that have shown up for the 3P’s meeting. He suggests they get right down to business as he too feels the excitement in the atmosphere. Mr. Hopper motions for Ms. Lady Bug to fly forward and take over the meeting.
Ms. Lady Bug speaks in her quiet little voice, “Today, for Taking Care of our Human Beings, you will all have a chance to share the experiences you encountered while delivering the Luv-a-Bug Cards on Unity Lane.”
Excited chatter builds-up from Nature’s Critters. Ms. Lady Bug clears her throat, “Ahem!” and continues, “First on the list...”. But Ms. Lady Bug’s soft voice fails to be heard over all the ruckus the Critters are making. Each Critter is eager to tell his or her adventures and hear the amazing tales from others. Old Mr. Cat-da-Pillar is on a nearby log stomping his front legs and loudly demanding, “Order, please, order!”
Smarty Pants, hiding in the back bush, finds it hard not to call out its order for “The whole Enchilada!” But even if it dared, not one of the critters would hear because they were all just too noisy.
The Critters finally quiet down and Ms. Lady Bug informs them of the order of the reports. “We will hear first from the Critters who delivered to ‘1, 2 Buckle My Shoe’; following next would be those Critts who went to the Bucklers neighbor’s house ‘3, 4’, then the next house until we reach the last house on our lane.”
Miss Mockingbird can’t hold back sharing her acquired human knowledge and squawks, “It’s called going in chronological order! It’s like, um, you start with I, 2, then go to 3, 4 and keep counting on, like that!” Satisfied with her moment to educate the Critters, she flies up into Weeping Willow Tree where she does her observations.
Ms. Lady Bug was a bit annoyed by the interruption, but she uses her manners and thanks Miss Mockingbird for her contribution. She suggests that the Snail Mail begin with their tale.
The Snail Mail are ready to tell their story and what a story it is to tell. Landlow Snail begins slow and dramatic, “We were able to get the Luv-a-Bug Card all the way up to the front door of the Buckler’s house. Then all of a sudden, the door is pushed opened and with a big gust of wind...” he makes a ‘whooshing’ noise then starts to speak louder and faster. “An old straw broom is pushed over the threshold and out comes a pile of ants, tumbling all over us snails!” The Critters gasp and make other shocking noise as Landlow Snail takes a deep breath and continues the story -back in his normal low voice. “The Broom Pusher began ranting and raving until it spotted our card and yelled, ‘Who dropped the mail outside?’ The Broom Pusher picked it up, stepped back inside and slammed the door shut! I’m not sure what happened to our dear friends the Ants but we had a successful delivery!”

Mr. Hopper looks at the army of surviving ants lined up on a branch of the Weeping Willow Tree. “What do you have to say for yourselves, Ants?” Black Ant is in the front of the line-up, and he begins telling the tale. “We were out foraging for food and were able to get inside of Lil’ Ben Buckler’s house through a loose floorboard. Big Scout, who was leading, led us straight to his usual supply of food in the hall closet.
That’s when the Broom Pusher spotted our trail, followed us to the closet, opened the door and right there in front of her eyes was Big Scout’s endless supply of Lil’ Ben’s uneaten lunches – thrown right there in the corner!” Angie Ant eagerly takes the spotlight to have her say, “And to add insult to injury, the Broom Pusher found all of Lil’ Ben’s protective riding gear pushed over in another corner! My, my, my, she was so upset! I guess she realized that he hadn’t been wearing his protective gear when he crashed on his bike.”
Hunter Ant takes over telling the story, “And that’s when she swept us all up in a bunch, pushed open the door and with one big ‘swish’ we all went flying into the air while she was yelling, ‘Get out and stay out!’ And of course, that’s when we landed all over the Snails as they were making their delivery.” The other Critters all begin talking and laughing, expressing their surprise at what happened at ‘1, 2 Buckle My Shoe’. Black Ant chimes back in and says, “Thanks to us Ants, the Broom Pusher found the safety riding gear and hopefully she will make sure that Lil’ Ben wears them when he is out riding his bike.”
“Also, let’s think about the food he is wasting when there are thousands of kids around the whole world starving! I’m sure his mother will have something to say to him about wasting food.” This comes from Matilda Ant, known affectionally as Tilda, who is one of the oldest members in their colony.
Toad thinks that is food for thought and thanks Tilda. He then congratulates the ants for completing their task. Cheers go up for the Ants because of the great job they did helping out the Buckler Family.
Honest Owl admires the ants and observes how organized they are and how hard they work. He recalls the old saying about studying the ants; learn their ways and you’ll be wise.
Cat-da-Pillar once again tries to bring the meeting back to order, so he raises his body as high as possible and shouts, “Order, please, order!” This command, of course, causes Smarty Pants to think about ordering some of his favorite mouth-watering food. But wind pies will have to suffice for now.
Every critter soon settles back down, and Lady Bug asks for the next report. Pretty-Shy, the butterfly, made the delivery to ‘3, 4 Shut the Door’, but he is too shy to share his story. SpyFly is willing to share it as she was an unplanned participant in the whole event that took place at the Doars’ family home. SpyFly reports that she saw Pretty-Shy balancing a card on his back as he was making his delivery. At the same Chloe was arriving home from school. Chloe had to put her school bag down on the porch to look for her house key. When she put it down the bag fell open. Spy says, “I quickly knocked the card off Pretty-Shy’s funky wings and it landed right in Chloe’s opened knapsack. I saw this as a great opportunity and dived right into the open bag!”
Pretty-Shy, forgetting about his stuttering, felt courageous enough to now add his own two cents worth. “I-I-I was surprised when that happened! I-I-I was wwworried SpyFly was trapped but then I-I-I rrrealised she did it in-in-intentionally so both the c-c-card and ssshe c-could get into C-C-Chloe’s home. Ssshe’s a smart one, ssshe is.” Pretty-Shy proudly relaxes back onto a nearby flower. SpyFly thanks Pretty-Shy for the compliment and picks up the story where he left off. “Chloe found her key and opened the door; closed her knapsack and picked it up; then took the card and me right into her house, unknowingly!”

“It’s called ‘Catching two birds in one hand!” Honest Owl hoots this out from high up in the Willow Tree. He looks down at the pond, gives a long lazy yawn, indicating it’s time for an early nap. Honest Owl is well aware of the time, he knows that when the water lilies open, it’s nearing midday and when they close evening is coming. Each time he catches a whiff of the aroma of lilies he reminisces about the olden days when Iris Chameleon would return to the top of the Willow smelling like the sweet lilies, after a long day out and about the neighborhood, attending to her business. He drifts off to sleep with these pleasant thoughts. SpyFly continues her story, saying, “Chloe puts her school bag on the table and it falls open and that’s when I make my big escape, but not before making sure the card falls out also. I hang around the house checking out the atmosphere. I even play ‘I Spy with My Little Eyes’
