Introducing Scotland
What comes into your mind when you think of Scotland? Do you think of mountains and misty moors, bagpipesandhaggis? Or do you think of beautiful, vibrant cities and a modern mix of people? Well, both images are correct. Scotland is a unique country with a strong sense of belonging.
Scotland is one of the four countries, along with England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, that make up the United Kingdom (UK). Scotland is the northernmost country of the UK, located in the northwest corner of Europe. However, Scotland has not always been part of the UK. For many centuries Scotland was an independent nation, with an uneasy relationship with England.
The land and the people Large parts of Scotland are wilderness, with huge mountain ranges and moorlands creating a wonderful sense of space. The islands along the western coast add to the beauty of the landscape. Here you can find beautiful white sandy beaches alongside stark mountain cliffs.
The varying landscape and the history of Scotland have created a lasting and distinctculture. Scottish people are very proud of their country and have a strong sense of Scottishness. However, Scots are also keen to welcome new cultures into Scotland, to move forward together in the 21st century.
How to say... Most Scottish people speak English. The ancient language of Gaelic is spoken by fewer than 2 per cent of the population. It is common only in the northwest. Scots is another ancient language, and today many Scottish people still use some Scots words. Gaelic:ScotlandAlbaScots:mountainben mountainbeinnbeautifulbonny
