Author’s Note
On The Run is a phonic beginner reader for teenagers and adults. It comes as a sequel to Sam The Man ( ISBN: 978-1-84231- 022-9 ). The teaching aim of the book is to introduce the trigraph igh and some useful vowel pairings (dipthongs) - ai , oa , ea and oo . There are also many opportunities to revise the short vowel (cvc) and split digraph (magic ‘e’) words which were introduced in Sam The Man and Mudlake respectively.
I wish to thank Phyllis, David, Kevin and Effie for their help in writing this sequel - and also the letters of encouragement sent by the readers of Sam The Man. Some of their questions gave me ideas for this sequel.
This book is dedicated to the memory of George.

The story so far...
Sam ran a scam at work.
Sam lost his job.
Sam and his dad shot the boss
and stole his cash.
Sam fled to Brazil,
but the cops got him in the end.
Who’s who
Maria - Sam’s girlfriend in Brazil.
Bob - Sam’s dad. He is in a gang. He is in prison.
Deb - Sam’s mum. She and Bob are divorced.
Frank - An old mate of Bob’s.
The Kings - A rival gang.

Chapter 1

When the cops got Sam
they made it plain.
Six years and no bail!

Sam had to wait in jail
for the next plane back.
Not that he was going home!

Sam felt rage.
Sam felt rage and shame.
And he was afraid.
It was not jail he was most afraid of...

If she’d had any faith in him,
she had no faith now.
