Introducing Ireland
Think of emeralds, and what do you imagine? Do you imagine lots of different colours of green? Ireland is sometimes known as "the emerald isle". This is because of the lush green vegetation that covers a lot of the country, creating a beautiful landscape.
Land of contrast Ireland is a country with a very distinctcultureand lots of old traditions. However, Ireland is also a modern, 21st-century country. Some modern developments have had a negative impact on Ireland’s traditional culture, but others fit in well with it. This contrasting and surprising feel to the country draws tourists back again and again.
Ireland is an island, located in the northwest corner of Europe. It lies just to the west of Great Britain. Far to the west, across the Atlantic Ocean, lies Canada. The northeast corner of the island is part of the United Kingdom, and is called Northern Ireland. The rest of the island is called the Republic of Ireland, and is about a third of the size of the United Kingdom.
Ireland has had a troubled history, with violent clashes during its struggle forindependencefrom the United Kingdom. However, Irish people have never lost their deep sense of culture and pride in their country. Towards the end of the 20th century, Ireland modernized very quickly. It became one of the richest countries in Europe. However, this was not to last.
