The Basics Lizards are a group of reptiles that belong to the order squamata . In addition to lizards, the squamata order also contains snakes, and is the third-largest order of vertebrates after birds and fish. Squamata are defined as reptiles with overlapping scales. Unusually, lizards are essentially defined as any species of the order squamata that isn’t a snake . The only exception to this is the tuatara , a reptile that lives in New Zealand that is given a group all of its own!
