Who were Akbar and Birbal and why so many stories keep floating around them? Emperor Akbar was one of the greatest rulers India has ever had. After the death of Humayun, his son Akbar was crowned king when just fourteen years old. As a young man, Akbar loved riding horses, enjoyed hunting and all kinds of outdoor sports. It is said that he never learned to read or write. As he grew older, he learned to value knowledge and wisdom, to love beautiful paintings and to be interested in the finer things in life. He filled his court with intelligent and skilful people and encouraged them to discuss all kinds of subjects in an atmosphere of freedom.
Among the brilliant people at Emperor Akbar’s court was a man called Birbal – one among the nine gems in his court. He was a trusted adviser to the emperor. As the years pass, more and more stories have been told about Akbar and Birbal. These stories may or may not really be true. Some might have been built around folk stories. These are stories that people have been telling each other for years. All these stories have been drawn from different sources. Each of the stories may have originated in different languages but the author has retold them in a child-like manner.
The stories contain a great deal of truth. They carry the wisdom, wisdom and humour. They also show the lighter side of Emperor Akbar’s life. We as a publisher hope they will make you laugh. To laugh and to think are perhaps the most important outcome of this book. Enjoy it!
