INTRODUCTION
Welcome to your new guide, Police Role Play Exercises. This guide has been designed to help you prepare for and pass the role play/interactive exercises that form part of the police officer assessment centre in England and Wales.
Approximately 65,000 people apply to join the police every year. But what is even more staggering is that only approximately 7,000 of those applicants will be successful. You could view this as a worrying statistic, or alternatively you could view it that you are determined to be one of the 7,000 who are successful. Armed with this insider’s guide, you have certainly taken the first step to passing the police officer selection process.
The guide contains a number of sample role play scenarios which are designed to make it easier for you to prepare. Read the advice contained within this guide carefully and take notes as you progress.
You can also watch the accompanying video for this title online at the following website free of charge.
Go to the above website now and access the video.
It is important to point out at this early stage that the sample role play scenarios provided within this guide are entirely fictitious and are not the exact ones you will encounter during the assessment centre. However, they are excellent examples of the types of scenario you will encounter on the day and you will find them a huge help in your preparation.
Don’t ever give up on your dreams; if you really want to become a police officer then you can do it. The way to approach the police officer role play/ interactive exercises is to embark on a programme of ‘in-depth’ preparation, and this guide will show you exactly how to do that.
The police officer selection process is not easy to pass. Your preparation must be focused in the right areas, and also be comprehensive enough to give you every chance of success.
If you need any further help with any elements of the police officer selection process, including application form help, written test and interview, then we offer a wide range of products to assist you. These are all available through our online shop www.how2become.co.uk .
We also run a 1-day intensive Police Officer Course. Details are available at the website www.PoliceCourse.co.uk .
Once again, thank you for your custom and we wish you every success in your pursuit to becoming a police officer.
Work hard, stay focused and be what you want!
Best wishes,

The How2become Team
POLICE SERVICE CORE COMPETENCIES

The role of a police officer is made up of a number of core competencies. The term ‘core competencies’ refers to a set of key behavioural characteristics, which theoretically separate a great officer from a bad officer. We say theoretically, because without being able to demonstrate and understand these competencies, you simply won’t get the job! You’ll generally be given a copy of these competencies in your application pack, or alternatively they can be found on the website of the constabulary that you are applying to join.
So, how are these competencies relevant to the role play exercises? Well, the answer is that they are extremely relevant. Throughout the role play exercises, you will need to demonstrate every single one of the core competencies. You need to match your responses to the scenarios with the competencies, to show that you can handle police scenarios in a way that is expected of an officer.
The core competencies that form the basis of the police officer role are similar to the following.
*Please note that the core competencies can, and do, change from time to time so it is important to confirm that they are correct.
PUBLIC SERVICE
Demonstrates a real belief in public service, focusing on what matters to the public and will best serve their interests. Understands the expectations, changing needs and concerns of different communities, and strives to address them. Builds public confidence by talking with people in local communities to explore their viewpoints and break down barriers between them and the police. Understands the impact and benefits of policing for different communities, and identifies the best way to deliver services to them. Works in partnership with other agencies to deliver the best possible overall service to the public.44
OPENNESS TO CHANGE
Positive about change, adapting rapidly to different ways of working and putting effort into making them work. Flexible and open to alternative approaches to solving problems. Finds better, more cost-effective ways to do things, making suggestions for change. Takes an innovative and creative approach to solving problems.
SERVICE DELIVERY
Understands the organisation’s objectives and priorities, and how own work fits into these. Plans and organises tasks effectively, taking a structured and methodical approach to achieving outcomes. Manages multiple tasks effectively by thinking things through in advance, prioritising and managing time well. Focuses on the outcomes to be achieved, working quickly and accurately and seeking guidance when appropriate.
PROFESSIONALISM
Acts with integrity, in line with the values and ethical standards of the Police Service. Takes ownership for resolving problems, demonstrating courage and resilience in dealing with difficult and potentially volatile situations. Acts on own initiative to address issues, showing a strong work ethic and demonstrating extra effort when required. Upholds professional standards, acting honestly and ethically, and challenges unprofessional conduct or discriminatory behaviour. Asks for and acts on feedback, learning from experience and developing own professional skills and knowledge. Remains calm and professional under pressure, defusing conflict and being prepared to step forward and take control when required.
DECISION MAKING
Gathers, verifies and assesses all appropriate and available information to gain an accurate understanding of situations.
